  1. ghost of miles = Mr. Excitement I wish I was having this much fun over the weekend. I'm thinking... maybe I could swap identities with my Mom? Things are different out here, in the Great Southwest. I'd like to attend the Irish Riot.
  2. Dan: At least, you didn't have to use the word 'stagger' in the description of your weekend plans. You ain't doing too bad.
  3. My plans for Saturday are: - to sleep-in late in the morning (till about 11:00) - get my haircut at noon - enjoy some good coffee and a late breakfast - get better aquainted with my new Mosaics and RVGs - go to a friend's house, in the early evening, and drink waaaaay too much beer - stagger back home, and get better aquainted with my new Mosaics and RVGs - take a shower, hop into bed, and consider it to have been a good day to be alive Sunday: - get out of bed in time to watch the NASCAR race broadcast from Bristol, with my Dad - drink more good coffee while at my parent's house - eat some of Mom's home-cookin' - make my way back home and get better aquainted with my new Mosaics and RVGs
  4. I've never thought too much about Stanley Turrentine. Not too much good and not too much bad. Yeah, I know who he is and I've heard him play. I own the Turrentine RVGs. For whatever reason, his style never spoke to me. He's always seemed, to me, to be more of a soulful or R&B type of jazz player. I've asked myself the question, why listen to Turrentine when I can listen to Mobley, Coltrane, Dexter, Sonny Rollins, etecetera? I purchased the recent RVG Prayer Meetin' (Jimmy Smith & Stanely Turrentine). A switch was flipped somewhere in my brain. Now, I can't get enough of Stanley T! I played Hustlin', and the new Stanley RVG multiple times last night. It's interesting how a certain artist won't speak to you for a period of time. Then, suddenly, things change and you can't get enough of the same artist.
  5. I often wonder how well the Capitol Jazz box sells for Mosaic? I've a feeling it's a very good box. I mean, I want it... but, I continue to avoid making the purchase due to the price tag.
  6. I just, today, learned, for the first time, of the name Buddy Bolden. Sheesh. I'm no longer concerned about who I don't know about. I'm glad this music continues to provide me with new names to discover. The names of Lennie Tristano and Warne Marsh are new to me too. I'd heard of Lee Konitz but have, until just recently, known nothing about the man.
  7. I hate it when stuff like this happens. Especially with Mosaic. As a customer, you don't need the frustration. As a business, Mosaic doesn't need the frustration/expense either. I've always had very good service from Mosaic. However, I received two Mosaic sets yesterday and I've not opened all the disks in either set. Your note is a good reminder to remove all the shrink wrap to make certain all the disks are present.
  8. I purhased Rockin' the Boat yesterday but have not yet listened to it (nor have I read the liner notes ). John Patton on the tambourine? The John Patton? I'm thinking Blue Note didn't want dueling organs? >Rockin' The Boat<
  9. Thanks for the opinions regarding the Gioia book. I purchased the History of Jazz and started reading it last night. I finished the first chapter. I appreciated the information about African rhythms, the influence of the blues, New Orleans culture, and Scott Joplin. I'll be moving ahead to the New Orleans Jazz chapter this evening. Things worked just right that I'll be able to read the New Orleans chapter while listening to the newly-arrived New Orleans Jazz Mosaic box. Does life get any better? Here is last night's view from my bed:
  10. I'm interested in getting a good set of headphones. I'm looking for something in the $300 - $500 price range. From what I've read on this board and others, the choice is between Grado and Sennheiser. I checked the internet but could find no listing for where these brands are sold. They're definitely not sold through Best Buy. I'd never purchase headphones without being able to see/touch/listen to them first. Is there a list of stores/locations/cities where they sell Grado and/or Sennheiser?
  11. Cats? We don't need no stinkin' cats. Sexy, sexy!! Thanks, man. I hope you find your new Mosaics as enjoyable as I found mine to be. Lots to listen to over the weekend. You ordered the T/K/M too, correct?
  12. The New Orleans Jazz and T/K/M sets arrived today. I've been playing, reading about, and enjoying both sets very much. I was concerned about liking (or not liking) the New Orleans Jazz box. However, it sounds quite good to me... lots of heart & soul & New Orleans. The T/K/M box is great, of course. Considering the players on the T/K/M box and the many positive recommendations from the people on this board, how could the set be bad? The answer: it couldn't (and it's not). I'm so very glad I purchased the sets before they went OOP. Now that I've heard some tunes from each, including the funeral music on the New Orleans box, I'd have been disappointed to have learned either was no longer available. That I'd missed my last opportunity to make my purchase. Also, as usual, some fantastic mastering work done by Malcolm Addey. Here is the view, across my bed, as I listen to the music, read the words, and play on my computer (at 1:00AM). It has been a good evening.
  13. I had to tell my 'boss' at my job... just press the F7 key before you email your shit out to the group. At least your words won't be misspelled. How difficult can it be to press the F7 key and do a quick spelling and grammar check?
  14. HBO, I think? >link<
  15. I was never into Gorelick's style. But, I was able to tolerate him, not as a jazz player, but as a player of decent, modern, instrumental music. That is, till I read the interview he gave to Barnes & Noble. Now I think, what a egomaniac, ignorant, ass. Remember this nonsense from the G-Boy? KG: ...when you listen to Charlie Parker, on pretty much any record he's going to sound the same... Charlie Parker would squeak a lot, and that's why they called him Bird, because his reed would chirp. B&N.com: You think that's why they called him Bird? That's interesting. KG: That is why they called him Bird. That was the deal. He played so fast, and his reed would chirp because it... I don't know, it just couldn't take the speed of his fingers. But Sonny Stitt used to do it without the chirping thing, and played beautiful. But I don't think he ever got the same accolades that Charlie Parker did, mainly because Charlie Parker was the first one. Anyway, I know a lot about that kind of music, and I admire those players. OMG!
  16. This ain't no bullshit. I've ordered (now awaiting) the two Last Chance items currently listed at Mosaic (New Orleans Jazz and Tristano/Konitz/Marsh) because of this damned board. I'm . Errr... I mean, B).
  17. My first pick, Love For Sale by the Mobe Quartet. I love that one.
  18. For what it's worth... I purchased the Miles Davis at the Blackhawk Complete (the 4-CD box) at Barnes & Noble this evening at a 10% discount. There was a 10% off sticker on the upper-right corner of the box. If you're a Barnes & Noble member you get an additional 10% off (a total of 20%). I don't know if this sale is for just this month? I found the Miles box in the normal CD bins, not with the other box sets on the box set display (behind the checkout counter). The list was $44.99 less the $4.50 discount equals a price of $40.48. This amounts to a total of about $10 per disk. The 2-CD sets tend to sell for about $25 around here (Tucson). It’s not a huge savings but $10 per disk isn’t bad either. If you want/need this box... take a visit to your nearest Barnes & Noble.
  19. The spirit of this thread is ANYTHING you can think of or have in mind, that was posted on these boards, by the users of these boards. Anything you may have found amusing, uplifting, or aggravating. Anything that made you laugh, cry, think, ponder, or want to blow chunks. Anything that is a favorite. Yeah, ANYTHING.
  20. I just had the thought... When I think of the name Wynton, I always think Kelly, never Marsalis.
  21. Damn. Nothing in Phoenix or in the vicinity or Arizona.
  22. Easy answer: more than 30. Sometimes I'm on this board for the entirety of my evening. This board is so much more enjoyable than sitting around watching all the juvenile TV shows. Also, I can listen to music at the same time as I'm reading from/posting to the board.
  23. Sometimes, I find terrific uses of words and ideas on this board. One of my favorites, from JSngry is listed below. Do you have any favorite quotes by other board members? >source link< Thanks, Jim!!!
  24. I’ve heard of Liebman but know nothing about the man or his music. When I first learned that Mosaic was releasing a Dave Liebman Select, my initial thought was, “who is this guy,” and “why would I want his music.” Before I viewed the Mosaic site, I was thinking Liebman was a flute player. Upon listening to the Liebman/Beirach Select via the Mosaic page, however, my mind was quickly set straight. There is some great sounding music in the Liebman box. I’ll be ordering mine soon.
  25. I believe it's good to have a hobby, a genuine interest. My interest is learning about, listening to, and collecting jazz music. The music is genuine and real to me. I can enjoy it whether I'm young or old. I can enjoy it by myself or with somebody else. I can discuss the music, write about it, buy it, sell it, listen to it, and enjoy the anticipation of finally finding something I didn't already have. I've made new friends because of my interest in the music. I'm gaining some knowledge of the history of American culture to boot. I don't believe CD collecting is as expensive as various other hobbies. I have a friend who would spend thousands of dollars on a single camera lens (he was into photography). Another friend would spend thousands of dollars on car parts (he was into old cars)... and on and on. Storage can be a problem but, a single CD isn't that big. A single CD takes up less space than a paperback novel, for example. It's good for my mind to have my interest in jazz and collecting the CDs. Good vibes for the mind, in a manner that is not destructive (such as enjoying art), seems more beneficial, over a lifetime, than the off-setting costs in dollars and space. I'm not necessarily concerned about being a completist. I am, however, concerned (at times, consumed!) with the on-going search and enjoyment of the music, the history, the friendship, the discussion, and the art form.
