I'd not have survived the jazz drought as long as you. No way. Congratulations on your purchase of the Tristano/Konitz and Capitol Jazz boxes. Whoo hoo!!! I orderd my T/K/M over the weekend. Of course, I had to add the New Orleans Jazz box to the same order. I want the Capitol Jazz before it goes OOP. I'll wait till it hits the Running Low (if I can wait that long).

Does this mean the price is going up if I want to buy a copy directly from Mr. Nessa?

What's up with this? I had the same experience over the weekend. Is there something in the air? Does the Moncur Select sound better after it has aged on the shelf for about a year? I didn't know what to play. My hand moved to the Moncur Select. I popped the first disk in the drive... and have been enjoying the music ever since. Weird. I tried to revive the Grachan Moncur Select thread. >located here< It may get revived and it may not.

I purchased the Grachan Moncur Select when it was initially released. I played it a couple of times, never even listened to all three disks, then placed the box on the shelf and felt content with my purchase. I didn’t play the Moncur Select too much, till recently, nearly a year later. I’ve been enjoying the set very much during the late evening hours. It sounds much better to me, after the sun goes down, and the night air moves in. The set is a mixture of Moncur and McLean releases, with each player receiving about equal playing time. On one of the sets Wayne Shorter takes Jackie’s place along-side Moncur. Lee Morgan is present too. Tony Williams fills the space with his dependable drumming mystique. I’m always surprised when a piece of music, that I’ve had shelved for nearly a year, suddenly speaks to me and makes me glad I had the music available for my listening pleasure.

'Live' jazz. Eh? Like, where you go out and see the music played by a live person? Like, right up there on the stage? We have our moments in Tucson (like when Bud Shank played here). Mostly, the only jazz I hear is what I play on my own stereo. Or what ss1 introduces me to from his collection.

I do own some Coltrane. I own zero Coltrane box sets.

I've purchased the Byrd, the Hubbard, and the Grant Green RVGs (so far). This post is nothing against the music. I'm happy to have all the new RVGs available for purchase. However, a picture is worth a thousand words. It seems too bad that the EMI tag is larger than the Blue Note tag.

My first experience with Warne Marsh will be when I receive my just-today-ordered Tristano/Konitz Mosaic box. I may be coming back for Chuck's reissue in the weeks to come. Unfortunately, not much information here. I'll admit ignorance and ask... this is a title that has been out of print for some length of time? As I've written, many a time before, a person just never quits learning about this great music.

Ain't this the damned truth!?! If it's not CDs, then it's books. If not books, then DVDs. If not DVDs, then computer games. If not any of the above, then it's beer. Or maybe, it's all of the above, mainly CDs, and beer? I remember, back in the very early days of the internet (circa 1995)... I spent many early morning hours (just after midnight) collecting/trading pics of scantilly-clad women via the internet (sort of like the Babes thread on this board). The pictures were interesting. Mostly, it was just fun to be collecting the files, chatting with people, making offers to those in need, and seeing what could be obtained. I'm glad I was always majorly turned-off about smoking cigarettes.

I'm feeling so much better. I resolved some of my 'issues.' I just placed an order for both the New Orleans Jazz and the Tristano/Konitz sets. I can no longer post my meanderings in this thread, about whether I should purchase the sets or not. Hmmm... What will be the next Mosaic to be moved to Running Low/Last Chance?

I've seen mostly 'still' pictures of the classic jazz players. I enjoy the hell out of the black & white photographs. The clothes, the instruments, the cigarette smoke drifting through the air. It doesn't get any cooler. Not by a long shot. I don't know whether a good stage manner/presence is determined by how the artist treats his audience, or how he plays his instrument, or how he carries himself (maybe all the above?). My pick, from what I've seen, is Thelonious Monk, based on the clips from the Straight No Chaser film. The hat, the dark glasses, the goatee, the way his hands hit the piano keys, the odd tapping of his foot. Monk seemed so cool, so modern, so hip, so jazz perfect. I wish I could have been there at the Five Spot, enjoying Monk along with glass of a good single malt.

I was looking at this book at Border's over the weekend. >link< The book caught my attention. I nearly purchased the book but decided to check opinions on this Board first. Sometimes a book can appear good but turn out to be not worth reading at all. Has anybody read this book. Opinions? Yay or nay?

I'm trying to convince myself to purchase some Mosaic sets today, SUNDAY, before the day expires. Before the sets go OOP. Errr... New Orleans Jazz, Tristano, or both? Will I be able to do it???? Jeez. I have 'issues.'

Your words speak my own opinion, almost exactly. Sometimes I enjoy being apathetic. You know? My job is just something I do to be able to enjoy my non-work time. I work to live. I don't live to work. Congrats on finding something better to do with your work hours. But, keep enjoying your non-work hours just the same. The non-work hours have always been what's more important to me. At the same time, it's a bittersweet situation. You have to spend so much of your time at work, why not find a way to enjoy it, and maximize your income, as much as possible.

I work in a software support center. I get to listen to people whine to me, for eight hours per day, about their computer/software problems. Sometimes I'm able to offer a solution. Sometimes I'm not. Yet, I have to find a nice way of getting the person at the other end of the telephone line to politely disconnect the telephone call before I do. The job is so-so. The schedule/hours are good. The computer knowledge/education is great. The pay is acceptable (I can generally afford to save money in my 401k plan and buy a desired amount of Mosaics & RVGs). The medical/vacation benefits are excellent.

I've been listening to the Grachan Moncur Select more and more recently. I ordered the set when it was a new release. I listened to parts of the set then put it on my shelf, considering it a good selection of music. I've been pulling the box out recently and REALLY listening to it late at night. It seems, somehow, both comforting and complicated. It makes no sense and lots of sense at the same time. This music speaks much louder to me late at night than, say, at 3:00 in the afternoon. I'm listening to the Some Other Stuff set (with Wayne Shorter) as I type these words. My spirits are high with Moncur/Shorter playing on the speakers behind me (while my laptop computer sits in front of me).

Ahhh, no. My Mosaics are for me and my hands only. At the same time, I'd not expect another person to lend me his Mosaics either. The sets are too fun to have and too difficult to replace. I don't want to see my Mosaic sets either not returned, returned with a scratched CD, returned with a wrinkled insert, or returned with coffee cup rings on the booklet. Know what I mean?

Errr.... yes, Yes, and YES. WINme is not a good operating system. It's known to crash often, lose settings, even lose its own registry. I have WIN2000 on my Desktop computer and WINxp on my laptop. My Desktop crashed often and without warning when it had WINme on it. It has crashed only three times since I installed WIN2000 (about 2.5 years ago). My laptop has crashed NEVER since I purchased it in October of the year 2002 (with WINxp). WIN2000 and WINxp use the newer Windows NT kernel. Which, from my experience, is far superior to the older kernel used in WIN95, WIN98, and WINme. I'd not blame Zonelabs for the frequent lockups on your system. Zonealarm seems fine when running the NT kernel. I'd place a majority of the blame on WINme. In my opinion, you'd be surprised, amazed, and enlightened at how often the more current versions of Windows DON'T lockup. The question still remains, however, is WINxp really worth the extra expense (when you could be spending that same money on new jazz CDs )? Is your computer's hardware able to efficiently run WINxp?

I had Windows ME a couple of years ago. It was humming along just fine till, one day, it said it lost its Registry. The operating system died completely after popping the Registry message. I installed WIN2000 leading up to WINxp. My computer has been running per expectations ever since the replacement of WINme. Today, I'm spending some time replacing WINme with WINxp on a friend's computer. My friend's copy of WINme, after two years of service, has lost its Registry. Anybody else still using the piece of shit software code-named Windows ME? Got any great WINme stories to tell? You know, the type of story where you're using WINme, all is well, then suddenly, all is not well, and you did nothing to cause it? Yeah, time to update to WINxp or Linux. I've never been a Mac person and know not much about the Macs. Friends of mine who use the Macintosh system seem to appreciate it greatly.
