  1. Well, in fairness, the board software doesn't think you are. FWIW, the only women (listed) are δήμητρα (zero posts), Elissa (256 posts), and ophelia (2 posts).
  2. RIP... ...I thought his performance in Brokeback Mountain was nuanced and incredibly compelling. PS: Just saw this in one on-line obit: "At the time of his death, Ledger had just finished playing the villain The Joker in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the Batman series. The film is to open in July."
  3. Yup, that appears to be it. The name of the day of the week is just a "two letters long" abbreviation, but it does indeed change depending on which (apparently) language I select. Thanks!!
  4. OK, so I've got this really cheap travel alarm clock -- an "Atomic Clock" that can get its time from Colorado (or broadcast from some such place). But you can also set it manually (which is good, cuz it often takes 24 hours before the signal from Colorado is received, for whatever reason). So I'm setting the clock manually (which I've owned for years, but long ago lost the instructions for), and in the cycle of settings, I can't figure out what the last setting refers to. Here's the cycle... 1) 12 hr / 24 hr mode 2) Hour (1-12 or 1-24) 3) Minute (00-59) 4) year (2002 and up) 5) month (1-12) 6) day (1-31) -- from which it automatically gets the correct day of the week 7) "F" or "C" (temperature units of measure display, yeah it has a thermometer in it too) 8) "E", "I", "S", "F", "G" ??????????? What in the devil does the last setting stand for?? What setting/feature does it set?? And what do those settings stand for?? It's NOT related to time zone, because there's a separate time zone button, which cycles through all four of the U.S. time zones (without changing the internal time of the clock -- it just changes how the time is displayed). My memory is that the clock automatically (supposedly) changes to Daylight Savings time (and back) from the signal it gets from Colorado (when/if it gets it). So I don't think it's related to that. I have the strong feeling that the answer is something so obvious that I'll end up looking like the biggest idiot in the entire world when it is finally revealed to me. (In which case, thank god I have the power to delete this thread whole thread! ) I'm hoping it's not so obvious. Anybody know?? It's a pretty cheap clock. No brand name is even written on the thing, it says "made in China", and I think I paid $9 for it in a Walgreens or something like that.
  5. I think these got reissued with bonus material, maybe that's why you're seeing the old copies in the bins. Yeah, and the only thing keeping me from picking up the cheap used copies is the lingering thought that I should spring for the new ones with the bonus material. Soon as I see the new ones cheap enough (or the old ones REALLY mega-cheap), I'm there. (And the fact I still haven't pulled the trigger yet (in over three months) would tend to favor me waiting to get the remasters with the bonus cuts.)
  6. Well, just today I picked up the BBC sessions double-disc set, used for about $12. Hard to believe, but this is the first Zep I've ever owned on CD, and the only Zep I've owned in close to 20 years (any format). Listened to a bunch in my high school days (mid 80's), and a little in college - but not much since. Figured I'd dip my toe back in the pool with the BBC material, since I'd never heard it before. Will probably keep my eyes open for a cheap used copy of "How The West Was Won" too. Also been thinkin' about Robert Plant's first three solo albums too, since I see 'em really cheap all the time (used). Yeah, yeah -- say what you want about that material -- but I'm a child of the 80's, and I'm curious - since I always liked what little Plant solo material I heard on the radio (pre-"Now & Zen").

  8. Geez, is that a slide-trumpet in the 4th photo from the top?? WTF?? (And before you ask -- no, that WASN'T the first thing I noticed in the photo. )
  9. Ted Curson's "Pop Wine" is really outstanding.
  10. One of my favorite musical quotes seems appropriate for this thread... "Beauty in music is too often confused with something that lets the ears lie back in an easy chair." -- Charles Ives

  12. Rawalpindi Blues (from Escalator over the Hill) A Night in Tunisia (Hey, technically Middle Eastern or not, they speak Arabic in Tunisia -- so that's "Middle Eastern" enough for me.) Basra (Pete La Roca) Others?? (Just fishin' to get a big list goin'.) Also, what are some of the earliest examples?? Anything else interesting that comes to mind, related to this general topic??
  13. I count Korngold's lone symphony among my all-time favorite neo-romantic works. His violin concerto is quite nice too, as is a bunch of his chamber music. Worth a spin for those so inclined.
  14. Old white guys save the day again, yeah!! I did my small part -- saw The Police in St. Louis back in early July. At about $125 per ticket, it was certainly worth it to me and my wife. It was one of the very few big arena shows I've ever been to (and the first one in over 20 years). Most of the rock shows we go to rarely cost much more than $15 to $25 per ticket, or maybe occasionally as much as $40.
  15. Anybody (else) heard the Blakey date with Woody and Tyrone???
  16. Roots is da bomb. I'd pay triple-scale for a legit CD of that puppy, in a heartbeat. Do Right is just plain freaky. But Sangrey is right - it's a key piece of the Tyrone Washington puzzle. Dyin' to hear The Trainwreck, and I had no idea that any of the Blakey/Shaw/Washington JM dates had ever been recorded (in any fashion). Would abolutely love to hear that group someday. Absolutely. Totally. Tyrone Washington, live!! The very thought sends chills down my spine.
  17. Would LOVE to hear anything by this band. Tryone and Woody, how can you go wrong!!
  18. And by cooking tips, I'm especially interested in what some of us have maybe had to learn the hard way. Like, I've got a rice steamer, and you absolutely CANNOT add any oil-based spices to the rice/water mix in the steamer. The steam can't penetrate the layer of oil on top of the water, and the rice will not cook even the tiniest little bit.
