  1. Thanks, Mark & Colin!
  2. Not sure this really fits here, but it's fun with old R5!
  3. Just gave the disc another spin - very, very good! There's less production than on the studio discs, and that makes for a nice change of pace! Really enjoying it! Congrats to all three of you! :tup
  4. Dare I say that there's a Lonehill CD compiling "The Route" and "Playboys", as well as the bits from the "Big Band" album w/Pepper, and some Jack Sheldon cuts w/Chet & Pepper? I have the two albums as part of the Art Pepper Mosaic, too - very good stuff!
  5. Great story, brownie! Wow! I love Gato's contribution on Cherry's Blue Notes!
  6. The Chet Baker-Russ Freeman quartet at its best! Highly recommended! Yes indeed! I just wanted to recommend these three to Daniel, as by hunting the original albums or reissues of original albums, you'd miss out on most of what's on these three fine discs!
  7. I haven't heard any of the LPs except for the Frank Tusa "Father Time" (which, just in case, is now part of Enja's recent 24 bit digipack series). There are plenty of fine radio recordings around from '74/'75 - that stuff is smokin'!
  8. Well, I wasn't doubting it all... just seems that because a tune bears a reference in its title doesn't necessarily mean it's in any kind an examination of any native elements. I guess Jim Pepper is one of the most on-topic musicians here, though honestly I wouldn't know how close he gets to being authentic... but he's authentic Jim Pepper, always, and that's fine enough for me!
  9. Just naively asking... how much of the music mentioned here actually has any native American influence, music-wise?
  10. Thanks, Adrian and Tom!
  11. Gave it a first spin yesterday... nice but a little more lightweight than I expected. And if only Ziegele could keep his darn mouth shut - his "lyrics" ruined almost every gig I've heard (not many, I tend to stay away, just because of that... why doesn't anyone tell him?) Anyway, they get into a really nice groove here, Schweizer plays fine, and so does Ntshoko. Ziegele on alto sounds quite heavy, and it seems he was around in London in the era when McGregor and Dudu were around, so that's cool. I'd say a nice disc for us suckers of ZA jazz, but nothing too essential.
  12. Catching up with this... Liebman is sort of an on and off thing here. I've never turned into a big fan of his so far, but I have lots of respect for him and enjoy the hell out of some of his music. Recently got the Enja reissue of the Frank Tusa album that is more or less a Lookout Farm set, Father Time. To me, this music has quite some appeal, 70s or not, fender rhodes or not. It's honest, lively stuff that I assume might make some folks nervous, but hey, they're trying out some stuff, and to me it works just fine! The duets are interesting, lyrical... Beirach gets to the front here, and honestly I'm not sure I understand him yet. It's not boring however, rather it's just a "code", I guess, that I don't quite get yet. Haven't played the Quest disc yet, but I'll love that one, I'm sure! The Paris gig that was partially released as Redemption on hatOLOGY was pure magic, for instance!

Very interesting points there, David! I'd buy this 3CD set within the blink of an eye if I didn't already have one of the albums and didn't have a hunch that the third was a bit less essential...
  14. I'll drink to that, Erik!
  15. Has Holland decided to use the same cover for all his discs now? The music to me has sounded somewhat same-ish anyway for a while now
  16. crap, this thread and my lack of impulse control just lead me to finally order copies of "Down in the Village" and "Late Spot at Ronnie Scott's"... have been looking for those for a long time!
  17. You're welcome! You helped me out with some good stuff, too! Wohl noch nicht ganz... aber auf dem Weg dahin Danke! And thanks to everyone else! I don't spend so much time here lately, but I still appreciate it a lot being part of this community here!
  18. Happy Birthday!
  19. Thanks everyone! Got some new music as I mentioned before... the Mosaic package wasn't here yet, but I'll sure enough will take it later on as well! Played some recent acquisitions this afternoon, some vinyl - to be exact: Edward Vesala's "Nan Madol" and "Heavy Life", as well as Bengt Berger's terrific "Bitter Funeral Beer". No films today, but I got a film noir box with several classics I've not yet seen - this one here to be exact: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Film-Noir-Collection-DVD/dp/B000UWXM1C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1271626500&sr=1-1 It contains: The Killers, Double Indemnity, The Big Steal, Crossfire, Out of the Past, The Blue Dahlia, The Glass Key, This Gun For Hire, and Farewell My Lovely. Of which I think I only know "Double Indemnity" and "Out of the Past", but I'll love to revisit both of these! And I just learned - from a mail I got to congratulate me - that there'll be another Godard retrospective here in May! Yowzah! I just caught "Une femme est une femme" again on Friday and was all enthusiastic and hoping to get a chance to see some Godard again soon, and there it is!
  20. Thanks David - I'll live on happily without that 3CD set then, no need to clog up space with mood music and duplicates!
  21. Sounds like you have all you need. You'd kick yourself if you bought it for the other stuff. Yeah, I guess I'd rather look for the Fresh Sound disc by the Couriers eventually. Though I don't have the Kinsey and London Jazz Quartet albums... how are those? I guess this is all more on the conventional side (rather like the Proper, not like Tubbs' Fontana albums from later on)?
  22. Well, they can still travel the interplanetary freeways by car, like Lemmy Caution does...
  23. This is a bit of a mess, it seems... the Jazz Couriers releases are a mess in general. I have a CD titled "Some of My Best Friends Are Blues" (Acrobat Music AMCD 4265, 2007) that contains TAP 15 (missing an alternate take of "On a Misty Night" from the first, Aug. 8, session) and TAP22 (plus "The Serpent" which wasn't on that album). Then I have "The First and Last Words" (Jasmine JACD 626, 2001) The whole Aug. 8, 1957 session is on there (including the alternate take - which was on TAP17 originally, titled "Speak Low"). The main part of that disc is TAP26 (titled "The Last Word"). In addition, there are two tunes from a "Top Spot Tunes un-numbered 45 rpm single-sided cardboard disc" ("Monk was Here and "Last Minute Blues", two short tracks from poss. mid 1958 w/Hayes, Scott, Shanon, prob. Bates, prob. Eyden). So I'll skip this new set, I guess...
  24. Thank you, GA, Jeff and John! And thanks to kinuta - I enjoy your postings in the film corner a lot, keep them going! Thank you brownie, too! Thanks for your friendship and all the great music I got from you! Indeed lots of music this year... will get the Arild Andersen ECM set, the Duke Ellington Mosaic set (which might take another few weeks to arrive - I only got a shipping notification for my own march discount order yesterday... not sure if the new distributor is just very lame or if they were flooded with orders during that sale... I made my payment a few days late, but it's still quite a delay between payment and shipment!) I have further reason to believe that I'll get the Satchmo in Scandinavia Storyville set as well... And finally, I got a deal for my duplicate Shank/Cooper set and will hence get the Lester Young Mosaic box also! Yowzah!
