I think that one went OOP a bit earlier, but I grabbed a copy of Bobby Hutcherson's "Montara" while on vacation in Budapest a month ago (gee, it seems so much longer...). Pretty nice one, though I'd not say it's essential.

actually, i think about that almost every day just wanted to point out that their policy of putting stuff online looks a bit erratic to me... which let's the future where nothing is available on cd but some of the back catalogue is online look less bright to me than it would otherwise... Yep, that's true. If they really go online, offering the music lossless and with all the relevant information (discographical data, covers, liners), they should really be able to offer the product in a variety of ways and in ways that satisfy both anal completists (such as yours truly) as well as anal album fetishists... they could sort of offer various bundles and packages (i.e. get all Jimmy Smith, or get the original album of "The Sermon" or get "The Sermon" RVG version or get "The Sermon" old CD version w/compelete sessions... there'd be need for only one file per track, but it should be accessible through various filters or searches...) That kind of online distribution, I'd certainly enjoy! (Of course the long-term storage issue would still not be solved... and the possibilities to share these files and all that...) But then, with the history of the majors in recent years, they certainly will f*ck up the online offerings eventually, as well, instead of trying to offer a well thought-out product for once... they'll continue to re-sell "Blue Train" or "Kind of Blue" forever, I guess.

just in case, here's the other thread - lots of discussion/recommendations there: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=48133

you know a copy of "Katanga!" is lying around here, waiting to be shipped, don't you?
-
Thanks for the info regarding the slipcases. I don't mind my copies not having them. I think most of those first ten I either bought used or I bought copies that were lying around in local stores for years, so the slipcases likely were thrown away after dozens of customers had a listen and they grew ugly...
-
quite a sorry-ass thread here... not much to add to, but I still don't buy the freedom of speech is worth much more than any kind of civility policy... I'm too yurpeen for that, I'm afraid. Anyway, just two things: Belated welcome to Carole, and good luck with your writing! And a shout out to Allen Lowe - never would have thought to read the name of Bruno Schulz here!
-
That's the same list that was posted before and elsewhere, I though the thread-starter spoke of yet another (unpublished?) list.
-
Which ones had slipcases? The only one I have w/slipcase is the Hank Jones (and the lousy orange colour has sort of faded away...). Never saw any of the others w/slipcases, but needless to say, I picked them up nevertheless...

I'm still much into The Band... waiting for "Northern Lights, Southern Cross" to arrive I'm taking a break now, having played each of the earlier albums multiple times in a row. Again exploring some Oscar Peterson, namely the Ellis/Brown trio (the Zardi's set, the Verve live albums, last night the collaboration with Louis Armstrong). George Russell, as well... though there, the discovery is about the later recordings, as I've cherished the Decca, Riverside etc. early albums for a while by now. I just got a used copy of "The London Concert" 2CD set (on Label Bleu) and will be digging into that soon. What's recommended from his later albums? My thorough Russell collection ends with the MPS double album... I have "The African Game" (Blue Note), "The Essence" and "New York Big Band" (both Soul Note) and now "The London Concert". That's not exactly a lot of music, for the past four decades... there aren't many live shows in circulation either.

Yeah, finally watched it (again... I think, I have at least some footage of this somewhere...) - wonderful!

Happy Birthday, Lon! And a speedy recovery, too!

Talking Heads - The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads (Rhino 2CD):
-
actually it's not just Horace Silver, but the whole rhythm section w/Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke (Art Blakey on a few of the earlier dates)
-
That one too, but the most "intriguing" one for me is the last..the one w/"In Your Own Sweet Way", "No Line", & "Vierd Blues". That's where you can hear that Miles has finally become MILES and Sonny has finally become SONNY, kinda like two brothers who grow up together real close and finally each go out on their own. Hm, I'll have to revisit that date then, sounds intriguing. I've never thought of it like that... I always thought Miles was quite MILES on those 1954 sessions w/Horace (Walkin', Bags' Groove, the Blue Note quartet date).
-
guess the one positive aspect about the miles/rollins box is that it shows concord aren't through with fantasy-prepared box sets yet... Yeah, but I have the impression that at the time of the release of "Interplay", that box was already announced as being such a pre-conceived set that Concord merely put out... I doubt that the third set was ready, but I don't know anything about it, of course. Would definitely be nice, but on the other hand a bit of a nuisance as well, as the Garland albums and the Ammons albums contain various titles without Coltrane (same was the case with "Cattin'" and "The Cats" - both are not completely included in the box, hence you'll have to keep the OJCs).
-
I'd say the highlight is the session with Rollins (Oleo, Doxy etc). Never warmed that much for the Dig album and the other two sessions, though obviously the Miles/Rollins/Bird session is very special. I wonder, if they pack up this half of "Bags' Groove" onto this 2CD set, will there be a new edition of the x-mas session by Miles/Monk/Bags to complement it? Or will those who don't have it on CD3 of the Monk Prestige box have to buy the 2CD set plus "Bags' Groove" plus "Modern Jazz Giants" to have all of that date? And to have all of the "Jazz Giants" album of Miles', you also need the Miles Quintet box, since there's the Prestige version of "Round Midnight" there, which wasn't added to my knowledge to any of the more recent reissues of "Workin'", "Steamin'", "Relaxin'" or "Cookin'" (it was definitely not on the old OJCCDs which I had). It's all a bit weird... I don't doubt that Fantasy had the best of intentions when they started doing these boxes, and I have the Miles and both the Coltrane longboxes, all three are well done. But with Concord having taken over, all these intentions have likely vanished, alas. But yes: still waiting/hoping against all odds for the third Coltrane box, too!

Nice find. And it is indeed fantastic. Where else can you find prime Satchmo, Jimmy Smith and Tal Farlow on one disk? AND that great jam track where Johnny Hodges sits in with the band of Dizzy Gillespie (Have Trumpet, Will Excite session) - I was so delighted to find that one there! It was also released on Hodges' Jazz Masters compilation on Verve (or whatever that series was called), and me no likee buying such comps...

I also don't have the Washington either - unlikely to go for it too I guess. Once my latest 'presciouses' arrive, I'm only missing the Peterson/DeFranco, Ray Brown and the Teagarden I think. Any movers and shakers amongst that batch? I keep the boxes though ! I didn't go for the Washington when I saw it because I had all the material. I have all the Mercury box sets, so I'm a big fan just haven't gone for the single releases . . . . Get the Teagarden (you can get it on iTunes if you do downloading) Thanks Jazzbo and Ubu for the rec - I'll pick this one up at some time (in the 'old' CD format when I can find it). Must have the booklet ! I played the Peterson/De Franco again some days ago, and I enjoy it quite a bit better than I used to! And I also like the Ray Brown a lot, just in case I haven't said that before (I think I have though)... it's much superior to the "Jazz Cello" album (LPR Series) and to the stuff on that 3-on-2 Ray Brown/Milt Jackson(/Cannonball) set.

guinness(and stouts) are good for you
king ubu replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
well, there's just one real Guinness, isn't there... all the bottled and canned versions aren't the same either, here... but still I sometimes buy cans (44 cl, they cost around 3€, rather crazy... but then a pint of open Guinness is usually around 5-6€... quality has its prize, I guess... :-) though as it certainly qualifies as medication, there should be a tax relief or something! -

Sure, I can vouch for Guinness being healthy... and tasty! Yum yum! Will have some tonight, after work... but first I'll have to make it through 8 boring office hours -
I guess all of it... too lazy to look it up, but go to Losin's Miles Ahead site... roughly: an early date, the "Dig" album (w/McLean, Walter Bishop etc), the great session with Horace Silver/Percy Heath/Art Blakey that yielded "Oleo", "Airegin" etc, and both dates from that Prestige compilation album (one with a transitional post/pre-Trane quintet w/Rollins, the other one with Rollins and Charlie Parker on tenors). I think I'll stick to my old Rollins Prestige 7CD set...

Chuck, would you be so kind a post the list of these 18 releases, please? Just so we youngsters know what to hunt for... I am aware of: Roots Earthy Outskirts of Town and I own: Olio but I think that's all... (or I forgot some or file some under one particular artist, who knows... All Night Long and All Day Long are under Burrell and/or Byrd in my shelves, for instance) I include: Just Wailin' 3 Trumpets 2 Trumpets 2 Guitars All Day Long All Night Long Tenor Conclave Interplay for 2 Trumpets and 2 Tenors After Hours Wheelin' and Dealin' Cattin' Very Saxy Dakar The Cats Coolin' and you could add a couple of Swingville dates. Thanks! I need Coolin' and the multiple trumpets, have the rest, I think... didn't think of all those with Coltrane... The Cats and Cattin' are among my favourites from this bunch of albums! As for Swingvilles - the one on the Hawkins "Bean & The Boys" CD, originally titled "Stasch", was that a Hawkins album, or more of a jam thing? Looks kind of interesting... the disc's around as a cut-out in a local sale right now!
