I differ a bit with you on those Sanders recordings. I really like "Crescent With Love", a 2 CD release from Evidence that combines two Venus sessions ("Ballads With Love" & "Crescent With Love") into one package. I play these CDs quite often. I got to see this band live at the Regattabar shortly after these were released and thoroughly enjoyed the music.  I do remember Pharoah giving the bassist a bit more solo space than I would have preferred. 10 minute bass solos might be fine for the leader but seemed a bit much for a Pharoah Sanders gig.

You've just reminded me that I haven't pulled it off the shelf in a while. :)

Must say I forgot about that one and I DO like that one. I recently played Welcome To Love and found that a little boring.

    Archie Shepp - Blue Ballads

I really struggle with this period of Shepp. He seems to run out of breath quite a lot and there's a samba version of "If I Should Lose You" where he doesn't seem to be able to control his horn. Maybe it is on purpose.

I never dug those Venus records as well. I see what you mean with his playing. I think Shepp could really blow a beatufiul ballad. The duets with Mal Waldron are amazing as are those with Horace Parlan. It's more the music as a whole plus the chosen repertoire that I dislike. Pharoah Sanders made a similar move in the 90's and I don't visit those records a lot too. Not that it's bad, it's just they made a lot more interesting music.

Nice to see it being appreciated more than it was here

Funny to see you got rid of that one as well. I sold it a few months ago. Big fan of the Dogon AD session plus The Hard Blues track which is included in my reissue of Dogon AD but the rest of the tracks didn’t really do much for me.

  4. Wow I am one lucky fellow I guess 😵 I saw a copy of Noah Howard’s Live in Europe at the Dutch website Bol.com by a second hand vendor. It was the 2022 Sconsolato reissue and for 22 euros including shipment this sounded like a sweet deal. The package arrived and when I opened it, it contained the original Sun pressing in near mint condition 😍 for only 22 euros!  now that was one pleasant surprise :)

That is such a great session. Hayes made some excellent records in those years. I have a feeling those get overlooked a lot because he’s credited as the leader and probably less well known as some of his band mates. The Real Thing is another gem. And great to see Hayes is still alive and active on the scene!

  6. Well everybody should know for themselves what to spend their hard earned money on of course but this is among the most silly things I have ever seen. I haven’t been interested in any music merchandise anyway thought in my teenage metal years I used to own a few band shirts of course.

I like Scotch and for me ice is like blasphemy but that’s my personal opinion.

  7. Hat Hut is another label with a very recognizable ‘house style’. Also matter of taste but I like them! I am talking mostly about their cd reissues. The original LPs also had their own style but can’t say I am a fan of them

Steeplechase covers are completely boring and art direction never was their strong suit, though of course they've released a TON of great music.

Yeah definitely and that’s the most important of course. I always seen it as a missed opportunity as some good cover art could sparkles one’s interest.

  9. Well they have a house style, just like Blue Note for example. I like their cover art but that's a matter of taste. I must say I like the Intakts as well. I have more problems with the SteepleChase cover art to be honest.

I'm not really fond of most of ECM's output. I tried quite some different albums lately trough Spotify that got high RYM ratings but not a lot of them actually sticked with me. A little too smooth and sometimes just a little boring for my tastes. On the other hand: they have put out some amazing music. AEOC, Roscoe Mitchell, Tomasz Stanko and Evan Parker come to mind. Mal's Free at Last and Jarrett's Survivor's Suite. Brahem is someone I always really regarded highly and there is more I just can't remember at the moment.

I'd say they have attributed a very valuable ammount of music to the whole jazz culture. Definitely understand if it's not your cup of tea, but  I don't like the easy ECM bashing some people tend to do.
