Source for Eric Boeren 4tet - Coconut?

Bol.com and platomania.eu would be difficult to navigate with no knowledge of the Dutch language. And they both list the item as able to ship in a few weeks time at the earliest. -
As things stand now with big profile artists complaining they aren't getting paid enough for Spotify, it's a safe assumption that jazz musicians aren't getting any money. That would mean the decent thing to do is not stream. Downloads (mp3, FLAC, etc.) are probably a different matter financially from streaming. Do you trust corporations with not locking you out of your own property (is it or isn't it) in the future in some way or another? I do not. The possibilities for them to do so are numerous.

Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box
erwbol replied to djcavanagh's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It has not been a problem for me with any of the Sony Complete Columbia Albums sets (Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Woody Shaw, Mahavishnu Orchestra). I usually check when taking out a disc and putting it back. -
Downloads require different playback equipment and there are possible restrictions on the buyer's location (e.g. Blue Note 24bit/192kHz FLACs). I do not trust the direction corporations are taking us with downloads. It gives them too much power over our music libraries' future. Streaming is a fat cat scheme which should not be supported out of consideration for the artists who would like to get payed once in a while as well. I like looking at the pretty pictures of the cover art. Call me shallow, but it helps me focus on the music. Sometimes reading a book can be too distracting.

The paper used for the mini LPs does not scratch the CDs. -

The cheapest from Holland seems to be bol.com with €3.45 for shipping to North America. The CD is €1 cheaper at Platomania, but they charge €6 shipping. Both sites are in Dutch. The actual cost of shipping a one CD letter to North America from The Netherlands is €5 (100 - 250 grams). -

This was remastered by the same remastering team of Mark Wilder and Maria Triana, so ... I'd say the book in the Hancock set is better than the Miles book. It's more like the better books from the Miles metal spine series. Table of Contents Foreword ... 12 The Chameleon, Essay by Bob Belden ... 17 Profiles, Jean Hancock ... 35 Profiles, Herbie Hancock: The Composer ... 50 Profiles, David Rubinson ... 56 Profiles, Herbie Hancock: The Pianist ... 65 Profiles, Herbie Hancock: The Synthesist ... 66 Complete Discography & Individual Album Commentary ... 71 Electronic Instrument Glossary ... 170 Production Credits ... 192 -
Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box

I had to cancel the Miles mono box when I bought the Mosaic Nichols box for $48, but if prices don't go up (dramatically) I might get it next month. The Hancock box is all new to me except The Piano and Live Under The Sky. I don't know how familiar you are with this music, but I'd say go for it. The Hancock box is up there with the Miles Davis Complete Columbia Album Collection as far as production quality is concerned. It might even be a bit nicer, even though the book is a softcover. Do you already have the eight never before released outside of Japan albums? -
Lucky for me I love both and don't feel the need to choose or even compare one against the other.
-
New, at least to me ... guess I'd have heard (of) them if they were wide-spread. But the price tag is hefty. Would still love to hear this! I'll probably get this regardless. Sigh. I love the Iron Man album. If it's not official it should really get uploaded to that place.

I think capitalism has mine as well! As a "streamer", I pay my cash and get to own nothing! Nor do the musicians get payed. It's a fat cat scheme!

Ah, i thought that was just a thing over here. Oh no, it's only been a couple of years since Concerto had detectors installed at all entrances so the discs can remain in their cases. The Jazz Center in The Hague used to put the booklets in little plastic maps and put these in the bins to save space. Less damaging to the discs at least. They were pretty unique in that way.

"We have gone through great lengths to master from the very best available original sources and believe you have in this box are the best sounding Herbie Hancock Columbia CDs ever released." Richard Seidel (from the foreword) Now listening to Sextant in great sound. -
There is only one Dolphy and I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer your question, but... David Murray does play with Aylerish squeaks and upper register activity. His Ballads For Bass Clarinet is one of my all time favourite albums. http://youtu.be/zj4oY86OUBk It's long out of print, but Downtown Music Gallery has some sealed copies left. eBay link

The waiting used to bother me, but the trick is to have a constant stream of CDs arriving at your doorstep. Place a new order at least once every week.

The box set arrived in one piece. North American board members who purchased through amazon.de will be happy to know the Hancock set (a cube) was wrapped in thick bubble plastic, placed inside a tight fitting cardboard cube, taped up and put into a far larger cardboard box for shipping (filled up with thick brown recycled paper). This is a style of packaging I have not experienced from Amazon in Europe for a number of years. The Hancock box set itself looks very stylish and firm. Book has softcover. More later. -
Remember when brick & mortars used to remove the CDs from their cases and store them in paper sleeves behind the counter? It was always a lottery at Concerto in Amsterdam whether your CD came with some outrageous scratches from improper storage and store playback.

Let's start by merging all bargain threads, and call it:

With the success of the Out To Lunch SHM-CD, I've decided to order one volume of the recent Japanese SHM rerelease of these albums next month.

Imagine the Rembrandt house in Amsterdam being saved from the wrecking ball by a local art enthusiast. -
Please, enough about the RVG. Though time to bury the hatchet somewhere else than in Rudy's skull with this new SHM-CD. All in the past. Unlistenable in my opinion. TOCJ a bit better on bass and deep bass clarinet sound, but perhaps due to twiddling of ze knobs? Agree TYCJ clear winner.

I was thinking about how that house was saved in the recent past just last week when I read about how eagerly the Steve Jobs house in California was declared a 'Historic Resource' by the Los Altos Historical Commission. Steve Jobs was pretty much a horrible man by all accounts, and what exactly is so admirable about his achievements compared to the geniuses of Jazz from the previous century? -
I believe the HD Tracks 24bit/192kHz FLACs are better as well, but this should not come as a surprise. I compared the FLACs to a good needle drop of the Music Matters LP set and they were pretty similar. Still, I believe this SHM CD brings out a lot more of the tapes than previous CDs. That beautiful deep bass clarinet sound is more present here for instance. I hope the other titles in this series are equally an improvement.
