Joe Henderson Trio at the Village Vanguard
erwbol replied to Durium's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
That sounds like a good deal, then. I was worried that they tried to make the Village Vanguard sound like the Village Gate, or some such. "Modern tastes" and all that. Glad to hear that's not what happened. I'd be really interested to know if this was originally recorded on analogue equipment. If it was a relatively early digital recording I wonder about the limits to "improvements". It does not have that early digital recording sound to it, like those eighties Deutsche Grammophon albums. There is a lot of warmth to the sound. -
Thanks for that link to the music, but what was that mentally disturbed barefoot Japanese fellow doing on stage that added anything to the proceedings? http://youtu.be/so9U5Fu4v2k

I'd say yes, there is now more clarity and a much more distinct soundstage. Take track three, Happy Reunion, for example. Al Foster plays his drums with brushes, I believe. On the old CD you can register the fact that Al is playing, but not much more. Here, you get actual detail to those sounds produced. The SHM-CD is not simply brightened, in fact, it is not a bright sound. This is simply a case of a better transfer from the original tapes to digital, like the Out To Lunch SHM-CD. No boosted bass, not too loud either. All three instruments benefit, individually and in the group sound. The music, however, also benefits. The Red Records date with Charlie Haden often has more fire to it. The Village Vanguard performance being more subdued/subtle benefits from a better sonic presentation. (Disclaimer: I'm no audiophile.) -
Joe Henderson Trio at the Village Vanguard

The first quote from a couple of years ago suggests the recording might be flawed to a certain degree, although the first (and only) CD mastering was apparently an improvement over the vinyl. This new 2013 remastering proves the recording was much better than might be concluded from the eighties releases of this material. Both the music and the sound had me spellbound with a big grin on my face. -

Looks like one of the Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw CDs is being issued at the same time: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TOCJ-95019 A complete list of the 2013/07/24 releases in post #50 of thread. I went ahead and ordered Vol. 1. Stellar sound on the new Japanese State of the Tenor SHM-CD. The old CD sounds very muffled by comparison, especially Joe's Tenor. People who weren't happy with the BNLT999 series and decided to ignore the new SHM Blue Notes, it's your loss. Edit: The booklet states these were newly remastered June 10, 2013 by Yoshio Okazaki. -

I'm a fan of the tv series Justified and would like to read some of the Elmore Leonard novels it was based on. Doe anyone have any recommendations on where to start?

Unless Customs get involved, they usually take their time... I have them shipped individually these days. On SAL they take two weeks max to arrive, and all shipped December 17-19.

I was just listening again to Empyrean Isles. What an impressive album and stellar sound. Hopefully, the following titles will be delivered within the next week: John Coltrane - Blue Train (TYCJ-81001) Sonny Rollins - A Night At The Village Vanguard (TYCJ-81007) Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - A Night In Tunisia (TYCJ-81010) Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil (TYCJ-81019) Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time (TYCJ-81021) Wayne Shorter - JuJu (TYCJ-81040) Horace Silver - Song For My Father (TYCJ-81044) McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy (TYCJ-81046) Thelonious Monk - Genius Of Modern Music, Vol.2 (TYCJ-81047) Joe Henderson - In 'N Out (TYCJ-81050)

There is interest, but I won't take their word for the quality of the sound.

That annoying trailer has not convinced me to spend money on this thing. Looks like more fuel for anti-Americanism.

Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box
erwbol replied to djcavanagh's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What Lon said. It's representative of Mark Wilder's work for Sony since 2009 (Miles Davis Complete Columbia Albums Collection, Mingus, Monk, etc.). You can safely buy all his recent Sony remasterings blindly. As the set's book says, they've gone to some lengths to gather the best source material and it shows. Even the most repulsive disco in this set sounds wonderful. -

Frankly, I've given up on trying to bring order to the Trane bootlegs I got from Dime.

The man is obviously ignorant of APO's Hybrid SACD of A Love Supreme. If you don't feel a heightened emotional connection with the music even listening to the CD layer of that disc you're probably not into jazz period! For this type of blogger and the people who place their thoughts in the comment sections it seems there is only Vinyl and all digital is no better than contemptible MP3.

How does this 7 CD box set compare in sound quality to the Pablo Live Trane European Tours? Any tape speed/pitch issues? Most of this material probably already resides neglected on my external harddrive.

Merry Christmas!

That's a blow! Do you know which SACD titles were released before this cancellation? I believe My Favourite Things was released early on. Are their LP releases also cancelled? Edit: Just found your post on this matter on the Hoffman board, Lon. It's sad ORG decided to call it quits with the SACD format.

The original edition also had a booming bass sound. I'm more excited about the Hybrid SACDs of Coltrane's Atlantic albums ORG Music Group is scheduled to release. Their SACDs of Rollins' The Bridge and Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come were fabulous.

Concerto consists of four or five interconnected buildings. Second hand is at the far left. I agree about the omnipresence of EU PD releases. It's one of the reasons I no longer go to Amsterdam specifically to browse their bins. It's also the reason I hardly ever support them anymore by placing online orders. They can go out of business for all I care, really. This means you're basically not going to find any Dutch jazz CD store agreeable, except for the Jazz Center in The Hague. ...and they are expensive - at least they were when I last ordered from them years ago, before board member Bluerein took over from its former owner. I did not know the Jazz Center did online orders. My negative comments pertained to Concerto. The Jazz Center in the Hague was expensive under its former owner. Still, I have a bit of a soft spot for that store, despite the former owner being a cranky old fart. The man was a bit difficult and apparently full of contempt for as he once put it these people driving up to his store in their fat BMWs and Mercedes. For sincere music fans only.

http://youtu.be/tdHhfhLBZLw http://youtu.be/NkycSgx21nk I was a big fan of Joe Satriani's Time Machine when it was released in 1993. John Coltrane was mentioned in the extensive liner notes and this piqued my curiosity. I still love to listen to that double album, especially the final two live tracks on disc two with his 1988 trio, Lords of Karma and Echo. Surfing with the Alien in its Legacy Edition sounds fabulous and I enjoy it now as much as ever. It even has a DVD with a concert performance of Satriani's 1988 band at the Montreux Jazz Festival. I no longer listen to Hendrix and all the other non-instrumental music that interested at the time. These two Satriani albums, however, are very upbeat and that's probably the reason behind the continued appeal. Of course, I listened to all music on very poor equipment until the late nineties.

I tried to place another order without registration this time and after entering my details it sent me back to their home page instead of taking me to the second step. Perhaps it's my browser, Chrome. Edit: Same shit with Safari.
