  1. Hey guys -- Have you heard "Goin' Down Home" on Cadet? Smokin' versions of "John Brown's Body" and "Work Song"! I once read (can't remember where) that the 'generally accepted' knock on DP was that he couldn't/didn't play the pedals too well. The, ahem, person who wrote this surely had never heard this album!
  2. That's a great avatar, Jim! I'll have to show it to my wife ... I'm trying to convince her that we need a couple of young felines around the house.
  3. I really dig "Lucky Strikes" on Prestige/OJC, and I just discovered "Brown Rose" on Xanadu. Both are quite good, IMHO, and are fueled by a couple of great pianists, Hank Jones on the former session and Martial Solal on the latter. Not being a fan of the soprano sax, I like Lucky's work on tenor more, but he's not bad on the soprano. I haven't heard but a song or two from "Tricotism", but I've read a lot of good things about it. With Oscar Pettiford and Jimmy Cleveland, how can it be bad?
  4. At least we're getting Ray Brown's "Jazz Cello"! I'm excited about it, anyway ...
  5. Thanks, Ray! I certainly do not wish to offend anyone -- I've always kept lists such as the one I have posted here (which I had posted on that OTHER board, as well) to things that are either OOP or have never seen the light of day on CD (to my knowledge). Mostly the latter. Rest assured, if Prestige saw fit to ever release anything on that list on CD, I would buy it in a heartbeat! I would much prefer having a CD to a scratchy LP, which would be all I could afford. Several of these LPs, in "NM" condition, have gone on eBay recently for $40 +, a bit too much for this working-class dog (ah, where have ye gone, Rick Springfield? ). By the way, I have contacted Fantasy about reissuing these titles. As always, I receive the company line as a response: we'll take it into consideration, etc. At least they write back!
  6. Yep, I get 'em at work, too. Right alongside the septic tank cleaning spam ... Wish I had gotten in on that X-10 mini camera -- they must be selling a ton of 'em!
  7. Well, guess I blew the "discrete" thing all to hell ... should I delete my post re: Prestige LPs? What sayeth the community?
  8. Looking for CDR burns of the following Prestige LPs: · Billy Taylor – BT Trio At Town Hall (7093) · Shirley Scott – Happy Talk (7262) · Shirley Scott – Now’s The Time (7440) · Byrdie Green – I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good) (7509) · Trudy Pitts – A Bucketful Of Soul (7560) · Byrdie Green – Sister Byrdie! (7574) · Duke Edwards & The Young Ones – Is It Too Late? (7590) · Milt Buckner – MB In Europe (7668) · Billy Taylor – BT Today! (7762) · Don Patterson – Tune Up! (7852) · Johnny “Hammond” Smith – Look Out! (8288) · VA - Jazz Soul Of Cleopatra (8292) · John Wright – The Last Amen (8322) I have at least a couple thousand pieces (CDs and LPs) from which I can burn in return. A PM or e-mail will be fine. Thanks!
  9. I always found "Mr. T" to be the absolute, no-doubt-about-it, hands-down BEST at making pop hits sound great jazzed up. Anyone ever heard his version of "Spooky"? I think it was on one of the BN "Lost Grooves" comps. Three minutes of aural bliss to my ears! Oh, and the Mosaic box is pretty good, as well ...
  10. mr jazz: Jimmy & Wes did two albums together, "The Dynamic Duo" and "The Further Adventures Of ...". Both are DEFINITELY worth picking up, esp. if you like the stuff on "Impressions".

    Ronnie Cuber

Well, well, looks like I will be the first to venture into the uncharted waters of this forum ... What say ye of Ronnie Cuber's output over the years? Specifically the Xanadu sessions? Not that much in quantity (two, I think), but the quality seems pretty high to my ears. I think Ronnie has been unjustly overlooked, from his work with the George Benson group to his recent stuff with Bobby Broom. I don't think he's quite as good as Pepper Adams or Nick Brignola, but he's pretty damn close, IMHO.
  12. I'd have to agree, SS ... have the forum, enter at your own risk, and if it gets crazy and breaks the ground rules, take it out. But I would give fair warning ... unlike some other BBs we, um, know of ... I, for one, will stick strictly with the music!
  13. "... puking from the speakers ..." LOL!! A more descriptive phrase I have not heard in a long time!
  14. I'd have to agree with both SS and b-3er, sound quality aside (it ain't great, but it ain't bad for a live rec from 1957), Jimmy is wild and, at times, a bit too much for my liking ... but I would recommend picking it up and letting your ears be the judge!
  15. I've heard snippets of this on the CD Universe website (I think ... ) -- I have to admit, I was kind of disappointed in it. Clyde sounds pretty good, but it's not as funky as I had hoped. That, and the vocalist on some of the tunes is lacking, IMHO.
  16. So, what are the ground rules for this forum? Anything goes? OOPs only? No CDRs? Inquiring minds want to know ...
  17. Maybe it's because I'm here at the moment ... failing short-term memory and all ... but I really do like the look of this board! And, it does appear that there will be a lot of discussion of the type of jazz I am most in love with -- SOUL!!!
  18. I think I hear some definite Brownie traces in Carmell's playing ... For those who've heard it, what did you think of the Frank Strazzeri session that saw the light of day for the first time on this set? I thought it started slowly, but picked up steam and damn near melted my speakers by the time "Injun" had finished!
  19. I have to admit, before 1957, Jimmy sounds to me like he is noodling more than anything else. I've played some early stuff for friends, and most say it sounds like roller rink music. After I slap them around a bit , I play the Trio + L.D. session, and the lightbulb starts to go off. Anything after and including that record, is music to my ears! I would have to say my favorite -- if I am pressed to pick just one -- is "Root Down" on Verve. I listened to that damn thing twice a day for a week after I bought it, and I never do that with a CD!
  20. IMHO, two of the best Rhoda Scott albums are part of the "Jazz In Paris" series: one is"Live At The Olympia", recorded in 1971 with Joe Thomas on flute and tenor and 'Cees' Kranenburg on drums. Great renditions of Trane's "Equinox", "Wade In The Water", "Li'l Darlin'", "Thank You (Fa Lettin' Me Be Myself)" and a drop-dead killer "Ain't No Use". The second features Rhoda in a duo with Kenny Clarke on drums, recorded in 1977. Soul Stream hit it on the nose -- too much music for just two people! These can be found at the Groove, I would think. Wish she had gotten the opportunity to record more through the years ... Any more recommendations?
  21. Hey Jim -- Think you've done a great job with this! Congratulations! Being a soul-jazz afficianado (sp?), I'm looking forward to picking up some info and recommendations (and maybe throwing a few out myself) ... I'm planning on picking up Organissimo's disc ASAP, as well. I've heard some of the tunes on the website, and they cook! Good to know that the BNBB is not necessary for the jazz community to keep on living!
