  1. I second this suggestion!
  2. Right now: Johnny Hodges - Don't Sleep In The Subway Schmaltzy at times, true, but it has some great playing by Johnny and others!
  3. Nice lookin' dog there, Dan! Looks like he has taken over in a very short time ...
  4. Hey Barak! LOL, Jim ... the ol' Possum lives just down the road from me. Haven't seen him on the 'lawn tractor', though!

  6. Right now: Woody Herman - 1964
  7. Didn't PM have a stroke, as well, or maybe a brain aneurysm? Amazing what the human spirit can be capable of ...
  8. Well, as written earlier, I really dig "Goin' Down Home". "Opus De Don" and "Oh Happy Day" are two other strong albums, IMHO, and these can be found on the Prestige two-fer "Dem New York Dues".
  9. I have the following available for sale. Prices are postage paid in the U.S. I will ship overseas, but buyer will be responsible for actual shipping costs. I would prefer payment by postal money order, but will accept a personal check with a seven-business-day wait for clearance. Grade given is for vinyl and is a play grade. Any questions or interest, please PM me. Thank you, and look for more to come! Genghis Kyle - "Back House", Timbre 501 VG $45 Jimmy Smith - "Black Smith", Pride 6011 VG+ $45 Johnny 'Hammond' Smith w/ Byrdie Green - "The Stinger Meets The Golden Thrush", Prestige 7464 VG- $15 Chester Thompson - "Powerhouse", Black Jazz 6 VG $25
  10. Bringing this one back up, since we have some new folks on the board. Also since I will shortly be adding a few LPs for sale ...
  11. HALLALEUJAH!!!! I have been wondering for several years what happened to Mr. Dowdy. Glad to hear that he is alive, and hopefully, well!

Listened to this this afternoon -- my impressions: If you like ragtime, you will dig this. If you're not crazy about it, like me, it won't get on your nerves too much, but you won't revisit it very often. Twelve songs, I'm assuming most (if not all) are ragtime standards. A trio, or perhaps quartet, with drums and bass, and maybe guitar -- couldn't really tell, and I didn't dig out the notes (wherever they are!) to check. Hank plays what sounds like a saloon piano. Guess that's the sound they were going for. All in all, I think a forgettable LP in Hank's storied career. It's OK, but those who do not enjoy ragtime can safely pass on it.
  13. Right now: Thad Jones/Mel Lewis - Consummation Whatta band!!!
  14. I agree with jazzbo ... a good set to wet the feet, esp. with the first disc (?) being traditional music played on the way to and from a funeral. Very interesting.
  15. AMEN to that!!!!

    Hank Jones

Daniel -- I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere amongst the piles of CDRs I have yet to listen to ... I'll try to dig it out and post a thought or two on it later today.
  17. Definitely check out the High Note releases ... I recently got them from emusic and love them!
  18. Silly, perhaps, but would've been damn funny, IMHO! Agree with what has been said about "Swingin'" -- nice enough, but not anything essential. The LP goes up on eBay quite often, and usually fetches well over $100 ...

    Jim Snidero

Kenny, I have not, but thanks for the recommendation (John, too)! I'll pick it up ...
  20. Jim -- Clyde has been the house drummer for "Whad'ya Know?" since at least 1990. But I think he plays with the other two guys only when the show is on the road. It does usually air out of Madison. I have heard some great music come from that trio over the past couple of years, but the CD they put out about ten years ago is a bit of a snoozer. "Whad'ya Know?" is kind of like Seinfeld on radio -- a show pretty much about nothing, but it has been on the air for close to 20 years, I think. The host, Michael Feldman, has my kind of sense of humor, which is why I enjoy listening to it. Guess I could see myself doing the same thing, IF I had pursued radio as a job. After this week at work, I'm wondering why I didn't!
  21. Right now, at this very moment: Art Blakey and The JMs - At The Cafe Bohemia, Vol. 1 Next up, sticking with the Bohemia theme, Kenny Dorham's "'Round Midnight At ..."
  22. I'm fascinated by what he said on his live dates almost as much as what he played! He seemed to be a very intelligent man with a tremendous wit. I can only wish I had seen him ...
  23. Well typed, Mike! I, too, use online discographies quite often.

I'll add a second recommendation for "Long Night" ...
