  1. I was familiar with this record but had never had the opportunity to grab it until very recently. Snagged a copy off of eBay for a good price. Looking forward to hearing it!

    Woody Herman

On Verve (V6-8558) ... Does anyone know if this is a compilation album or an actual session? Any details that could be provided would be most appreciated! Thank you in advance!
  3. Can anyone out there provide info on the tunes and sidemen on Roy Burns' Roulette LP "Skin Burns"? Thanks in advance!
  4. By no means my favorite, but I have a vague recollection of a video (and song) that had the chorus: Fish heads, fish heads Roly-poly fish heads Fish heads, fish heads Eat them up, yum Now, am I making this up -- was there such a beast?
  5. Hey Joe, welcome aboard! Great to see ya here!
  6. Wow, Starsky & Hutch ... one of my favorite shows as a kid. Never thought I'd see it mentioned on this board! I believe Shorty Rogers also scored some material for various episodes.
  7. I heartily endorse With All The Bells And Whistles -- excellent!!
  8. FWIW (not much, I know ), I've heard just the opposite about Junior -- his conditioning during the past few off-seasons has left a lot to be desired. Who knows? Maybe the truth is somewhere in-between ...
  9. Milt Jackson - Centerpiece Willis Jackson - Gentle Gator

    lee morgan and who?

I agree with the mention of Clark Terry in the previous post. He's fit into SO MANY different types of sessions with different players. The whole "Mumbles" schtick aside (and I mostly get a kick from that, for what it's worth), Clark was incredible, IMHO, and still is for an 80+ year old. BTW, I had heard late last year that Mr. Terry was not in the best of health. Anyone know how he's doing? I saw him last summer (I think it was last summer) on David Letterman, playing and scatting with Quincy Jones' big band. He looked and sounded pretty good.
  11. The treatment of Skip Caray amd Pete Van Wieren stinks, IMHO. I met Pete many years ago, and he was great to an extremely nervous 12-year-old who wanted desperately to get into broadcasting! I am thankful Ernie Johnson got out before he was told he was too old to announce games -- or was he told that? As Skip would say, "Hmm, that's odd ..."
  12. I agree with you , David, Red's never received the recognition he should have, IMHO. It's great that almost all (or all?) of his early catalog is in print, though! I've always been partial to the Gene Ammons jam sessions on Prestige, too, titles like: The Happy Blues, with Candido All Star Sessions, with Lou D, Sonny Stitt and Junior Mance Jammin' In Hi Fi, with Kenny Burrell Blue Gene, with Pepper Adams and Ray Barretto Jammin' With Gene Funky Can't go wrong with any of those! Also dig All Night Long (Burrell, Byrd, Mobley, Jerome Richardson) and All Day Long (B & B with Frank Foster and Tommy Flanagan), which completes the All _____ Long triumvirate! Out of all these, I would have to say All Night Long is tops on my list -- hard to beat the combo of Mobley and Richardson with Burrell!
  13. Another big thumbs-up for King's Stax material. I just recently heard some of it for the first time -- great stuff!
  14. Claude Hopkins - Swing Time Willis Jackson - Soul Night Live (opposite ends of the spectrum, without question! ) The Jazztet And John Lewis

    Eddie Higgins

Mr. Higgins wrote one of the all-time-great-titled songs: "Zarac, The Evil One" Not a bad tune, either!
  16. I believe Mr. Stubblefield could play a damp shoebox and make it sound funky. It is a shame he has made little, if any money from his contributions to classic, timeless music. It is good to read that he is doing well and is in good spirits. The check will be in the mail shortly! God bless you, Clyde!
  17. Much too early to get excited, but if the bullpen holds up until Jason Isringhausen gets back, this might be the year for a Series trip for the Redbirds ... Just keep Cal Eldred out of any meaningful games! And the Bravos are 0-4?
  18. El zippo in the mainstream ... of course, what do you expect from a town that's supposed to be the "country music capitol of the world"? Whatever "country music" is these days ... There are a couple of undergrounds that have a smattering every now and then. At least they do provide club listings, of which there are a couple of places that do feature jazz nightly or fairly regularly.
  19. "Headin' South" ... 'nuff said!
  20. Joe Cain - Latin Explosion Greg Hatza - The Wizardry Of GH & Organ-ized Jazz Helen Humes - 'Tain't Nobody's Biz-ness If I Do Bobby Hutcherson - Skyline The (International) Noise Conspiracy - A New Morning
  21. If you like Budd"ie"/y Emmons, another jazz-based steel player to check out is Curly Chalker. To be honest, I don't think Curly's sound ever got out of Nashville (he was a BIG country session player, much like Emmons was -- and still is, I think), but his playing was very much along the same lines. The only Chalker LP I'm aware of is "Different Ways To Play" ... it might show up in used places in the southeastern U.S. ... worth hearing if you can find it cheap.
  22. Ray Brown - Jazz Cello Buddy Rich - The Monster Buck Clayton & Buddy Tate - Buck & Buddy (original title! )

    Jim Snidero

FINALLY got around to listening to this this morning. Initial impressions: Snidero reminds me (on this session, anyway) of Sonny Stitt w/out the flash. Which is not a bad thing, mind you. The strings don't blend quite as well as some other sessions I've heard. Billy Drummond doesn't get to do much. Renee Rosnes is OK, I've heard her sound better. Most tunes are pretty sleepy. "River Suite" is interesting (some nice flute work from Snidero), and "Forever Gone" has a subtle funkiness to it, but nothing else grabbed me on first listen. I will definitely explore this disc again, but initially, I have to say I'm glad I didn't spend $15+ on it!
  24. Dmitry -- I would say that my "VG" is very close to the Goldmine definition, taking price out of the equation. I try to be a bit more conservative on the actual condition of the vinyl ... The LPs that I have listed in the above posting I purchased from Dusty Groove (except for "Tell It Like It Tis") over a period of time, and the grades that I have listed are what was assigned by the Groove. I listened to each LP (except for the Holmes), and agreed with each grade that had been assigned. The pricing reflects a small decrease in what I purchased each LP for. I am interested in trying to break even as much as I can, so in this way I probably do not follow the pricing that Goldmine would recommend. I have found in my dealings in purchasing vinyl over the years that their prices tend to be low, anyway. I would be happy to answer any more specific questions regarding these pieces, either here or via PM!
  25. I have the following available for sale. Prices are postage paid in the U.S., with insurance extra if desired. I will ship overseas, but buyer will be responsible for actual shipping costs. I would prefer payment by postal money order, but will accept a personal check with a seven-business-day wait for clearance. Cash is OK, too, but send at your own risk! Grade given is for vinyl and is a play grade, unless noted. Any questions or interest, please PM me. Thank you, and look for more to come!
