  1. So does anybody have any help for the author regarding this line? We do not know whether Wilburn Green, Victor Sproles, Bo Bailey, James Scales, Jon Hardy, Billy Mitchell, George Hudson, or Clyde Williams are still on the planet.

    Joe Gordon

Same guy who played on the five Manne Blackhawk volumes, right?
  3. Perhaps we have here an attempt to communicate to a real or imagined audience that is reluctant to embrace the avant-garde but just might be interested if convinced of its musicianship. Liner notes are the traditional place for puffery. I ain't buying any used cars from the guy, but I'll give him a little credit for trying. If he's bending the truth a bit to try and get just a couple more people to open their ears and listen, yeah I'll give him some slack.
  4. The Schubert C Major Quintet d.959 with the Melos Ensemble is a personal favorite.
  5. Decided to find this and up it due to the 17 David Murray Black Saints that just appeared on eMusic. I already have Ming and am headed for The Hill and The Healers this evening. I do have mixed feelings, but am ready to explore some more. DeJohnette's Special Edition and Ming are good stuff, but I didn't get Murray much when he first started recording.
  6. There are now 17 full David Murray Black Saint albums up. I hope the rest of Black Saint will follow. I'm grabbing The Hill for sure today. There is nothing deeper than The Complete Dial and Savoy Recordings of Charlie Parker ; ). Verve is usually the next step, but emusic only has the With Strings via Definitive. The Quintet on Fantasy/Prestige is the only other one that I can vouch for the quality of. As with Jimi Hendrix, many lesser labels have scraped the bottom of the barrel in terms of recording quality.
  7. Just got to mention Walt Dickerson - To My Queen as a great performance featuring Andrew. RIP and Thank You.
  8. Oh, when the the Blue Notes go up? Got a link for J. R. Monterose? And have the Quartet Outs gone up anywhere? I did email you about my CD wallet forever lost on an airplane? I'm definitely in the market for Mp3s, preferably 192 VBR or higher! I still have the empty cases.
  9. Charlie Louvin is indeed the name of the sole surviving Louvin Brother.
  10. And, for the truly demented, there's the incredibly great Bud Powell - Johnny Griffin duets. I remember them being out on Xanadu LP.
  11. Speaking of 'stros and Phillies, Harry Kalas came to Philly and joined Richie Ashburn and By Saam. (next paragraph courtesy of google search) During a game in St. Louis, he was doing play-by-play, a Cardinals player homered. By Saam said, "Here's a ground ball to shortstop." Richie Ashburn was frantically signaling that it had been a home run. Saam added, : "And it's outta here." Another time, a San Diego player hit a double and Saam said that it was a "slide into second, a stand-up double." Then there's his first visit to the Astrodome, an indoor stadium. By remarked, "What a beautiful night for baseball. The flags are hanging limp. There's no breeze at all." (we now return to our regularly scheduled topic) While JSngry and I arrived at jazz about the same time, he was a few years earlier than me as regards the rock scene. Band on the Run was a high school favorite as was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. I didn't check out the Righteous Brothers until a few years later, but edc, if you can't hear that Unchained Melody, my sympathy to ya.
  12. Hey, don't leave out Waldron and Marion Brown!
  13. When Warner bought Rykodisk I think, been a few months.
  14. Max Roach Live in Tokyo Max Roach Horo or even Complete recordings of Max Roach with Billy Harper Sun Ra Horos Anthony Braxton Aristas - packaged so I can avoid Music for Umpteen Orchestras Jack Wilson on Discovery Ted Curson - The Trio from the pop side Garland Jeffreys - Ghost Writer Spirit - Spirit of '76 A good Nolan Porter anthology. I haven't heard but am tired of reading aboiut. and bring back that Jimmy Webb Rhino set sometime when I have a few spare bucks!
  15. Start your own thread about the new release! Why Yes!!! We wouldn't want Funny Rat to get off topic!!!
  16. I started redownloading the Prestige/Contemporary catalog a few months back, got about halfway through before disk space indicated taking a break from the endeavor. Too bad about the Koch Jazz disappearances, many things I have on burn only and would have to re-rip to get mp3s.
  17. Music of immense dignity, and it grooves! African Cookbook and Tanjah deserve a mention, Booker Ervin fit in very well. Hi-Fly has been covered by many, anybody familiar with the sultry Karin Krog - Archie Shepp version? I can't think of any Randy Weston appearances as a sideman, anybody know of any?
  18. Headed for the Schnabel Beethoven Piano Sonatas next week when my new downloads come in. THe curious should start with Volume 4 and the Hammerklavier sonata in particular. Anybody know anything about Oren Ambarchi & Keith Rowe - Flypaper?
  19. Booker Ervin - That's It Charles Mingus - Reincarnation of a Lovebird Santana - Shorter live at Montreux 1988 Martin Kuchen Trio Live at Glenn Miller Cafe (member of Exploding Customer) Down to one download left. I think I already own Cecil Taylor - Jumpin Punkins but I need to make sure.
  20. Is World WIthout Tears the one that mentions Coltrane? That's another good one.
  21. Great new album. These days Lucinda gets lumped in with Alt-Country but she's been doing it for decades so the label doesn't stick too hard. Intensely felt songs, one four letter word and several other blunt sexual allusions. Plenty of tenderness to offset the excellent tough woman moments. She can hang with Morrisette and PJ Harvey but doesn't spend her whole life there. Unsuffer Me is my current favorite, the arrangement really builds drama. Bill Frisell plays like he was put on earth to make this record, not at all obtrusive, but every note matters. Lucinda's voice is very earthy and a little rough. If you like this, you need her earlier album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road too.
  22. I'm a fairly reliable lurker, but dropped off the Blindfold Tests due to time difficulties. Scrabble going OK, dabbling in tournament poker also.
  23. Walt Dickerson - To My Queen. Three tracks worth many times the price. Early and great Andrew Hill as sideman.
  24. This has always been a favorite of mine, I prefer it slightly to Basra. The recording has never bothered me. The concept is subtle and evocative (think Maiden Voyage) rather than flashy and hard-swinging (like, say, the Messengers' Blues March). Anyone like me who appreciates both Blue Note and ECM should enjoy this unsung classic.
