Amalia Rodriguez and Don Byas - Encontro is up on eMusic, and I'm intrigued. I don't know anything about Fado, but Byas could play the telephone book as long as he played it real slow! Anybody heard this one?

Enjoying this one. I first heard pianist Chris Parker on The Alvin Fielder Trio - A Measure of Vision album with Dennis completing the trio and he is a very good match for Dennis. Leena Conquest's contributions on a few tracks give the project a Strata-East vibe. Free music focusing on the lyrical side and not averse to a groove. eMusic has both.

Jeremy Pelt - one hell of an interesting trumpeter

I have definitely enjoyed what I have heard of Jeremy Pelt. -

It is my observation that people who could be described as anti-WM are every bit as idealogical as WM himself, they just have a different agenda. I however have seen no evidence that Jeremy Pelt openly opposes WM. I suspect the poster has inferred that Jeremy Pelt is anti-WM based on his own predjudices. I am presumptuously presuming this is presumptuous of him. -
The Horo 2 LP set with a tribute to Fela. Never on CD, but perhaps someone has it on CDR

So the Alvin Queen seems to have Terrence Blanchard, Robin Eubanks Ray Drummond, Manny Boyd and John Hicks. I might put that in my Save for Later.

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
randyhersom replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes, that John Patton - Soul Connection just appeared, and I'll get it this afternoon. I had just been reading a good thread about that album. -
This one is feeding my drama jones, with the best use of drums I've heard in a symphony since Nielsen's Fifth. The Contrabass Clarinet and Tuba Concerti didn't grab me as quickly, but I'm anxious to give them another try.

A great choice on a budget, because one Vox box of piano music with Abbey Simon and two of orchestral music with Skrowaczewski gets you most of the picture. My favorite is Le Tombeau de Couperin in either version.

World Series of Poker 2008
randyhersom replied to randyhersom's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks Ghost. I had come to tournament poker from tournament scrabble, so I barely noticed the sound, the rattle of tiles in Scrabble being fairly similar. I love poker on TV, even last years 12+ hour pay-per-view of the main event where you couldn't see the hole cards, but have yet to spend more than a few seconds watching live when I'm not playing. -
Started May 30th, several gold bracelets and six figure paydays already won. I'm going out for Event 43 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo starting June 24th, will play a couple of smaller warmup events at the Binions Classic tournament just before that. Almost no chance I'll make it to the Main Event this year, but I hope to some year.

Here are the LPs released in Walt's lifetime. The Andooran CD Vibes in Motion is a twofer of Unity and Lawrence of Arabia. 01. This is Walt Dickerson 02. A Sense of Direction 03. Relativity 04. To My Queen 05. Impressions of a Lawrence of Arabia 06. Unity 07. Impressions of a Patch of Blue 08. Tell us only the beautiful things 09. Peace 10. Walt Dickerson 1976 11. Serendipity 12. Divine Gemini 13. Tenderness 14. Shades of Love 15. To My Queen Revisited 16. Visions 17. Landscape with Open Door 18. I Hear You John 19. To My Son 20. Life Rays Michael Fitzgerald has an excellent discography here. Walt did hum/sing along with his vibes on many recordings, and it's most noticeable on the later Steeplechases.

In a sense the title of his 1974 album, Tell Us Only The Beautiful Things is a statement of his Golden Rule. I think that's exactly where the "spaceball" impression that Chuck speaks of comes from. Perhaps we are so used to interacting with the "anti-civilization" that it can be quite disconcerting to encounter someone who wishes to communicate and respond to only the beautiful things. The fact that a conversation happens at all has to do with Walt finding beauty in many unusual places, and his skill at directing our attention to those places. I met Walt briefly at WRTI just before Serendipity came out, allowing my program director Russ Musto to do all the talking, and my personal impressions certainly fit with the aspects revealed in the interview link Ghost of Miles shared with us.
-
A couple of pages into the interview linked above, and I realized how to put one aspect of Walt into words. Sun Ra and Anthony Braxton conjure ornate and beautifully constructed complexities which draw interest to both artist and art. Walt's using his notes and techniques to communicate simple truth and beauty of life, and feels no need to call attention to himself at all. I hope I'm not being presumptuous here, but that's how it seems to me.

Wow. I own everything released on CD by Walt Dickerson. Peace still touches me deepest, as much for the deep bass playing that Walt drew out of Lisle Atkinson as for Walt or Andrew. Every note of every album is a worthwhile listen. Personally Walt represents a pinnacle of deep soulful (not soul-jazz) vibes playing that has not been approached since. I love Hutch and Hoggard as well as Milt, but they just didn't go THERE. I hope that appreciation for his playing blossoms in the coming months but would much rather he have stayed around for another gig or few. And if a few post-'82 tapes can be shared by the family, those of us who have heard every note and hungered for more would be most grateful. Thanks for a life well lived, Walt Dickerson.

Keith Jarrett minus the "vocalizations"?
randyhersom replied to mikelz777's topic in Recommendations
The pragmatic approach would include Frank Kimbrough, Myra Melford, Mike Nock, Geri Allen and Brad Mehldau. -
Yes, I've enjoyed Crown Trunk Root Funk. Nice variety of compositions. Taborn was the reason I grabbed it off eMusic as soon as I saw it, but I'm an O'Neal's Porch fan too.

I don't know Gatton at all, but Buchanan did sing occasionally on his albums. I'm quite fond of his Live Stock album, and find much to enjoy and admire in some of the others. Plenty of emotion for me, I simply can't hear any justification for pegging him as an emotionless technician.

Can anyone confirm that Humphrey Lyttleton has passed away? I haven't got around to hearing his music yet, but know he was highly regarded.

Who do you wish Lee Morgan had recorded more with?
randyhersom replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
My real answer is Billy Harper. Any alternate universe where there is one more jazz album by Larry Young is well worth visiting, though.
