  1. Jim, this vudeo is simply captivating and inspiring. Thank you so much for the heads up!
  2. Thankd for the heads up, Bruce. I agree, these 2 are indeed classics. I heard these recordings via one of the blogs and it'll be a pleasure to get the "real deal"
  3. Up! after 4.5 years Much love here. Griffin sound and music add a lot to Rahsaan's Volunteered Slavery and the Inflated Tear. Also his collaboration with Abdullah Ibrahim are worth mentioning, especially all those live-private recordings. And of course The Eighth Wonder on Strata, to which I'm very partial.
  4. Thanx Florin. I'll check that CD out. BTW, I have Iturralde's album with Hawes and enjoy it a lot. No Flamenco there, though

    Patti Bown

R.I.P. I mostly familiar with her piano playing in several Gene Ammons sessions. She had a very tasteful touch, I think. A good musucuan.
  6. While listening to Mingus' Tijuana Moods, I couldn't recall any other Jazz albums that incorperated Flamenco elements. I'm sure there are several, some of them are worth getting I'm sure. and I'm also sure I can get my answers here...
  7. Jazz or no Jazz? Sax player Ernest Dawkins buys some bells for the evening concert. Jerusalem.
  8. Jazz or no Jazz? Trumpet player Corey Wilkes Blows the Shofar in front of El-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem
  9. A little late to join the party, but Happy Birthday, my friend!!
  10. Up A really fine album, that I played quite often in the last year
  11. Teddy Edwards Buck Hill Houston Person Von Freeman (his Atlantic debut is from 1973) Dave Holland
  12. A good one. Actually, I'm partial to "Let Me Tell You 'Bout It". Dizzy really plays there?
  13. Hmmm. I've met many Canadian and Australian travelers even though their countries are rather large as well...
  14. I'm sure that almost 100% of the non-American board members have passports, and traveled abroad many times. Whereas Americans in general tend to travel more within the States and less abroad (Tuscany, Italy and Paris, France being the 51st and 52nd states... )
  15. Couldn't afford the shipping costs of the B3... Let alone the costs of shipping Jim, Joe, and Randy. We could handle these costs, it's the cost of Randy's cap we couldn't handle...
  16. Couldn't afford the shipping costs of the B3...
  17. The Tel-Aviv Jazz festival is celebrating 19 winters but for me its the 2nd one as it's artistic director. It's still very exciting for me. I'm hoping people will like the program. Here are some of the concerts in the coming festival: David "Fathead" Newman quartet w/Kirk Lightsey and drummer Sangoma Everett will open (and close) the festival. David will celebrate his 75th Birthday with us. Saxophonist Odean Pope will be joined by 8 Israeli sax players as well as Israeli rhythm to for his Saxophone choir and play his compositions and arrangements. Kahil El'Zabar Ethnic Heritage Ensemble w/Ernest Dawkins and Corey Wilkes Bassist Mario Pavone will play a tribute to Thomas Chapin – 10 years after Chapin's premature death. Pavone will be joined by the second third of the famed Chapin trio – Michael Sarin, as well as Saxophonist Michael Blake. Albert Beger 4tet – "Big Mother": One of Israel's premiere Jazz musicians will launch his new CD, dedicated to mother earth and environmental issues in the festival. David Balilty-Sangoma Everett sextet – Afro-Moroccan fusion. A fusion of African and Moroccan Gnawa music and rhythms, plus Jazz in this international project. Yotam Silberstein 4tet – New York Based Israeli guitarist Yotam Silberstein will play originals and Jazz and Israeli standards. Tromboniere – a group of 4 bones and a rhythm, with 4 of the best bone players in Israel. A tribute to Jacque Sany: at the age of 80, Jacque is still going strong, and we'll pay tribute to his jazz history, playing his Trad-Jazz/Bechet/Swing style all the way from Tunisia to Tel Aviv. Avi Adrian trio: a pianist that I love will play a concert that combines Jazz interpretations to Hassidic music and some Monk. In addition - some excellent free concerts, beer and a lot of fun!
  18. Diamondhead is Scheduled to release Tuesday, January 29, 2008 I'm excited!!
  19. Yesterday I interviewed Eddie Higgins just before he'll be coming to Israel for a single concert. I have a few answers to some of the issues raised here: Well, I did asked him about that. He said he was glad that album didn't sell good. It wasn't his idea to record it, but the producer who wanted to do a musical . Unfortunately the producer chose a musical with an extremely bad music. Eddie half jokingly complained about discographers that insist on documenting everything, warts and all. One of his first drummers @ the London house was a Swedish guy. One time when they went out for a smoke, that dude gazed at the blinking red light on top of the skyscraper in front of them and shouted "Zarac is coming!" That was a word Babs Gonzales used. It's a positive term, for example: "man this was Expoobident!" He also told me that he turned down an offer from Blakey to join the messengers. First Eddie said the reason was his steady job in Chicago and not wanting to go on the road while he had small kids. I felt there was more to it. After a few gentle nags, he said that he didn't wanted to join Blakey for two other reasons: a) he was afraid to be an outcast in the group since he would have been the only one who was not doing drugs and also the only white dude. b) Blakey had a reputation of first paying his connections and only if he had any money left - paying the musicians.
