  1. I very much agree. My wife and I reside in a low income neighborhood and we see people buying lottery tickets all the time. Usually the purchase is $3 worth of gas, $10 worth of cigarettes (which is basically a pack) and $7 worth of lotto tickets paid for with a $20 bill. The lottery system is nothing more than legalize gambling and false advertising. I cringe every time I see billboards claiming millions of dollars for schools from the lotto. In my home state of Michigan, it is not as simple as that. While it is true that the lotto contributes millions to the School Aid Fund (SAF), every year the government pulls other funding sources away from the SAF for the same amount that the lotto puts in, so the net effect of the lottery on funding is essentially zero. Neat, eh?
  2. Mike, my friend Glenn Brown and I are planning a modular-based album featuring his 1967 Buchla CM100 system and my modern synthesizers.com system in the video above. We were just talking about it today as a matter of fact! The mighty Buchla CM100 is featured quite prominently on the Glenn Brown & Intergalactic Spiral CD. The second CD of that group will be released soon as well.
  3. Because I'm a sound geek who likes to mess with crazy synths...
  4. I keep getting ads for music related things (editing software, Real Books, lessons) and home improvement.
  5. Yes, I want to keep the ads as unobtrusive as possible.
  6. Cool. Sorry, just saw this. Glad you figured it out.
  7. Hopefully you got a second opinion. When our furnace went down (which was over 40 years old) the first guy wanted to replace it at a cost of $4k. The second guy replaced the little ignitor thingy for $100 and it was good as new. It lasted another couple years until we were lucky enough to get some city grants to replace it with a new, high-efficiency model. Except the new model doesn't heat the house as well. Anyway, sorry to hear it. Hopefully you got all the crap out of the way for this year already!
  8. Haha. There's some funny stuff poppin' up. If you guys see anything that seems completely ridiculous or inappropriate, let me know because I can block specific ads. I'd like to try this for about a month and see how it goes. Thanks for understanding.
  9. I think 2012 should mark the return of the Rick-Roll.

  10. So on a re-run of Leno, Charles Barkley is on, talking about losing 50 lbs on Weight Watchers. Good for him. But then he said he never ate vegetables or fruit before. He'd never had "cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, & asparagus" but he's eating them now. Leno says "Shoot me right now, that sounds awful." Those are some of my favorite veggies. What's wrong with people?

  11. Like I said, the topic description column is not deleted from the database upon upgrading. There are third-party solutions to add displaying them back into the software, but they cost money (around $20 or so). I'm thinking we can upgrade, see if we like the addition of tags vs. lack of topic descriptors, and if we want we can pay to add them back in. Sound good?

I love your work, Jon. You know, we're working on another organissimo CD.
  13. Actually, I invite our friend aloc to start a blog where he can post this stuff to his heart's content. Just please put a link to any articles not eponymously penned, please.
  14. I figured it out. It's kinda convoluted. Once your blog is created, you enter posts from this page: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?app=blog&module=manage Don't ask me how I got there. It's really convoluted. Just bookmark it. Then click "options" and you can choose "Post New Entry". When you make an entry, you have to save it as a draft. Then it shows you how it will look on your blog, you choose "options" again, and publish it. Kinda weird. There's a new version of the blog software available. I'm going to see if we can upgrade. But for now, that's the way it works. Funky. You can also create a blog and then actually link to an external blog, which is neat.
  15. This is rather convoluted.
  16. Do either of you have the political forum blocked? I just re-checked the settings and I don't see why it's not working.
  17. Well, I'm totally down with upgrading the software. I just paid for the yearly license, which means upgrades are free (and free installation).
  18. Happy New Year, folks! Glad people are still digging this place.
  19. The latest version of this forum software actually supports tagging and it's searchable. But it does away with the topic descriptions (ie, the second line in topic titles). I can certainly upgrade to the latest version, but in another thread about the loss of topic descriptions, I got the impression that people didn't want that. The good news is that Invision did not delete the topic description column from the main database and there are third party programmers / add-ons which restore it, but they cost money. Kinda silly to remove a feature and then have people charge you to get it back. Personally, I think tags are more useful than the second line, but I do notice that the second line is used a lot around here.
  20. I don't mind if people come here to tout their releases. That should be a part of a vibrant jazz community, imo. I'd appreciate a little less snarkiness. Thanks.
  21. Food for thought as we enter the new year: Every day is a gift. It sounds cheesy but it's true. We have no idea what tomorrow will bring. This moment, right now, is all we have, and each moment passes by in the blink of an eye.

  22. Not sure how to implement that here without doing a lot of man-hours finding and linking / combining all the threads. While I always appreciate ideas on how to upgrade the board and also which threads to combine, I really don't have time to do the kind of work involved to index the entire site. Afterall, we have over 1,000,000 posts.
  23. organissimo is at Trio's South Bend tonight. We start at 9pm. See you there!
