  1. So was Big Train, wasn't it?
  2. Ridiculous is not the word, Pete. I received the same PR release, obviously written by someone who could use a course in jazz history. Some should, for example, tell him why Roswell Rudd playing traditional jazz is not odd.
  3. If you like this plane, you should see the other one!
  4. Let's not talk about what Dan believes.
  5. A small item (1 column, 4") on page 9 of yesterday's NY Post, the heading read: UFOs spotted over Mexico on the same page (2 columns, top to bottom) was an article announcing that the subway's MetroCard machines will now have information in Yiddish.
  6. One misplaced "i" did it. Guess the "i" didn't have it.
  7. Guess it's too late to ask Miles why he did.
  8. Why is it such a big issue? While artistry distinguishes jazz musicians from most of us--and, indeed, each other--we are all cut from the same cloth. So, we shouldn't be shocked or even surprised to find that some fall outside of what the likes of Bush, Ashcroft, or Santorum consider "normal." To think otherwise is to be very, very naïve. BTW, shock and/or disbelief can be a reflection of bigotry--why be shocked unless one thinks being gay or bisexual is a negative?
  9. I've read about this a few times, but I just have one question - Have any of his old boyfriends ever step out for an interview? If not, is it prudent to take it for a fact? No need for details, but trust me on this one, Dmitry.
  10. wow Chris that's two posts in the last couple days by you that allude to Miles and "the fellas", as it were. What are you getting at exactly? Something we should know about? I didn't think Miles' bisexuality was a secret at this point.
  11. I know Francis Davis (husband of Terri Gross) and I just couldn't see him married to Miles. Miles, of course, might have thought otherwise.
  12. I thought Miles was rather funny when asked if we might see another Mrs. Miles Davis. He answered something like, "No, but I have my eyes on a couple of guys." I don't think Reasoner realized that Miles was not necessarily joking.
  13. Received this today from Chesky Records. Hot Club of 52nd Street Bucky Pizzarelli - acoustic guitar Johnny Frigo - violin Howard Alden - acoustic guitar Michael Moore - bass For a good time, GET THIS ONE!
  14. But it only takes one playing to hear that it really sucks. This is not the album that will redeem Wynton--as so many people thought it would.
  15. Good! Thanks for the update.
  16. Very sorry to hear this, Randy. Please knoe that you have my deepest sympathy. Sounds like your mother was a very special person whose memory you will keep alive with the music she made you appreciate. Chris
  17. " This crap simply doesn't work the way it was designed." Au contraire, Moose, I think the problem is that the crap works precisely the way it was designed--i.e., poorly.

  19. A good story, Larry, and indeed also sad. I recall a time when some friends and I dropped into a bar on Amsterdam Avenue. It was one of those old NYC Irish bars with metal tiled ceiling, fluorescent lights, and a bowl of hard boiled eggs. We were seated in a booth, but I noticed a rather disheveled man at the bar. He had a book and several issues of down beat under one arm and I noticed that he seemed eager to show these to anyone who cared to look. When I went to the bar, he turned to me, opened the book, and pointed with pride to a dedication and autograph. It was Ross Russell's Bird biography and this was Ross' brother. The magazines contained articles and reviews relating to Ross. It was very sad, I didn't know what to say except that I was familiar with his brother's work, which pleased him. Then I bought him a beer.
  20. This is a third rate poor man's Kenny G who has been similarly intrusive on AAJ. I give him an A for effort, a C- for music.
  21. I wonder who has the petition circulated by a waiter named Ran Blake in 1960 or 61 and handed over to RCA in an effort to get them to issue Mingus's Tijuana Moods album? It was an amazing who's who in the jazz world when I signed it, and I understand that many names were added after I saw it. BTW, it worked--RCA decided to issue the album and when someone there suggested using the petition signatures on the cover, everyone agreed that it was a great idea. A few minutes later, however, reality set in. "We don't want people to know that it took all these signatures to get us to release an important album," someone said, soberly. Everyone agreed.
  22. I have never asked for an autograph, but have received quite a few, either in books or simply signed personal letters. As I have mentioned before, I used to be Benny Goodman's autograph signer, so if you have a signed 8 x 10 glossy, don't be too sure that he ever touched it.
