  1. This one? He's one cool guy.
  2. If you are after just one or two cups of high quality coffee made easy, go with a Gaggia. The model range is quite large and they are very reliable. I use mine 3 or 4 times a day, every day (i drink 2 or 3 espressos per day and my wife may have 1 with steamed milk or cream) and it has served me well for 3 years now. I'm expecting this to continue. No loss of pressure, easy to clean and simple, no gimmicks, construction. For coffee, i buy either Lavazza beans, ready ground or Illy beans. I know someone who owns the Nespresso maker (where you insert coffee 'cartridges' into the casket) but the cost per cup is quite huge. Hope you find what you're after. Tony.
  3. Jim, there is an expert in the US on Beatles discog. etc. contact him on dave@beatlesinthe.us Also Marc Lewisohn chronicled all (?) the bands performances thoroughly, he may have website or info. cheers, tony.
  4. Man Alive!!!! Forgive me if i'm wrong, but no-one has mentioned Getz.... he was pure sound.....ahhh.
  5. You never know, Wim Wenders may get involved and we can see the foot-tapping 'behind the-scenes', 'right at the-heart', 'life-affirming' and 'uplifting' footage of the whole event.
  6. Well, I paid a deposit today on a one year old Selmer Series II. It is bloody fantastic, I should be picking it up next week. It comes with the Selmer mpc and ligature. I have set my mind on a Link HR with Rovner ligature. The opening on the Selmer mpc isn't too big so i'll try the Alexanders again. Needless to say, i can't wait. Thanks for the advice by the way. Feel free to keep talking about all things above though. cheers, tonym.
  7. Gary, apparently they are broadcasting one of his gigs later in the year -- from the Vortex in London. keep an ear/eye open for that one. Usually the BBC Jazz On 3 webpage has upcoming broadcasts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3.shtml cheers, tonym
  8. Another one for Scott to do --- 'When Your Lover has Gone' --- he would really go to town here á la Ben Webster. He'd probably throw in the beginning too (the bit that rarely gets heard)!
  9. Funnily enough, another thread (about the interpretations of 'Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise') got me thinking about which players would be ideal for such a tune. I know we're not restricted to tenormen but I am wondering if Scott Hamilton has ever recorded this one. 'Scuse me if he has (was it any good?). Cheers, tonym.
  10. If you can't beat them....ME, ME, ME!
  11. That's the one Brownie, knew it was one of his later efforts though. cheers.
  12. If i am correct, Stan Getz played soprano on one of his last Concord albums, can't remember which. He also famously 'swapped' his horn with Gerry Mulligan on 'Getz meets Mulligan in Hi Fi' (Verve). If it weren't for the differnet phrasing of each player, it would be very difficult to tell them apart too!
  13. It's interesting reading. Mainly because the market is full of different horns for an infinite number of human shapes and sizes. Two things are clear though --- Good secondhand horns are an excellent choice and also the Yamaha student models seem to get universally good reviews. BTW i have just been made aware that there is a used Selmer series II for just over £1300, which seems great. The thought of owing a Selmer just gives me goosebumps. I was steered away from JK EX90. The local (but nationally esteemed sax repair guy/shop) can basically get his hands on anything, reeds, mps, horns --- the lot. So i trust him implicitly. He's not the type to make a quick buck. Is it true that a lot of jazzmen still prefer the Series II to the III? cheers, tonym.
  14. Thanks for the advice Jim. It's a good thing to bear in mind what you remarked upon re. sound. I look at the Sax forums a fair bit and i get the impression that many players change their set up as much as their socks (ok....bad analogy!) and i don't want that situation. I didn't mention i was going to stick with a hard rubber mpc. The Otto rubber should be nice. I've actually seen advertised somewhere in the UK Keilworths offered fairly cheap, the EX90, in a nice matt finish. They seem to get good reviews. I do agree entirely bout the sound thing. I often think when i switch i won't sound that much different to alto --- just pitched different. Thanks again.
  15. Hi, i'm considering geting a tenor sax. I'm curious however, to know whta the sax players amongst you use regarding model, mouthpiece and reeds. I am tempted to go for a Yanigasawa in bronze with an Otto Link mpc. This should make for a darker sound, which i prefer. Do any of you find that silver plated models do actually give you a brighter sound? Re. reeds, i always liked Hemke or Alexander french cut when playing alto. They were always easy blowing but didn't sound too cutting. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, tony.
  16. You're missing one crucial fact here: These are the only videos (therefore songs) that VH1 show anyway. cheers, tony.
  17. Britney 'Titney Spheres' Spears. Oh, and Mariah. errr, Celine. umm, Kelly Osbourne. bloody Justin Timberlake. MADONNA Surely those on the list fade in comparison in terms of being over-rated.
  18. I have bought 2 copies of this album; one for my wife and i to enjoy and another for my dad on his birthday last year. I had read her review in Jazzwise along with a live review from PizzaExpress -- sounded good, she looked very good. Must admit when i heard it i was waiting for the jazz 'element'. However, i do like it and still listen to it -- much as i listen to pop music on cd. I don't have an issue with her so-called over exposure as i don't watch MTV, VH1 or listen to radio (apart from Late Junction, JRR and Jazz On 3 -- all BBC Radio 3). My dad was over the moon; he hardly watches any TV, and listens to local radio at work in a noisy garage. He had though tuned in to Jools Holland and caught her appearance there. So he was chuffed when he was given this. He probably thinks she is cute aswell but would never risk antagonising my mother!

    Hank Mobley

Check out 'Old Folks' on Miles' Someday My Prince Will Come. His solo is one of the outstanding moments of his tenure with Miles, and on that album in particular. Given that the other great 'moment' was Coltrane's solo on Teo, then he's in good company. big up Hank --- Middleweight Champion --- BTW when i first started playing alto, i told my tutor that i wanted to sound like Getz & Mobley playing alto.
  20. have a look here, they have more headphone info that you would need in a lifetime. http://www.head-fi.org/ Personally go with Grado, the top of the range will only cost you around £600, and they are supposed to be out of this world. I have SR 125's which are great because i listen to portables a lot. However, when folkmention that they leak sound, believe me they do. Good listening. Tony.
  21. I'd just like to say how much i love his stuff on Colossus and Tenor Madness. His solos on 'When Your Lover Has Gone' and 'My Reverie' are fantastic. He's got that sort of relaxed- urgency that goes down so well when playing with those 'in the pocket' rhythm sections. And his sound? Well, he can produce everything there can't he? All of it unmistakeably Sonny. Fact: relating to another thread over at AAJ. I wanted to call our first son Sonny. My wife etc., thought i was insane.
  22. Bob Brookmeyer & Friends would be nice as a re-issue.
  23. I am in agreement with Req here, in that for me it's got to be Whistle Stop by Kenny Dorham. I love Dorham's playing normally, esp with Joe Henderson and Quiet Kenny is great. I also am a big Mobley fan, moreso with the conventional hard swinging units he mostly favoured. This may go some way to explain why i was quite dissappointed with this disc when i received it. However, i just can't love Kenny Drew. His playing seems unbearably routine to me, much in the way Oscar Peterson's does. Not an album i choose to put on often then! Secondly, 'A Blowing Session' -- Johnny Griffin. Now, if this didn't have Griffin on it AND all of the tunes weren't taken at such a brisk tempo. Then i would probably quite like this one. Trade anyone?
  24. Catesta, do you have any opinions about gambling on hookers?
