  1. Hi John, I think this may have been covered a while back over at the old BN forum, anyway, I simply took mine back to the vendor (HMV) and said I wanted a replacement. They obliged within a couple of weeks. I hadn't tried to remove the glue as I wanted them to see what sort of mess it had made to the disc. Best of luck. BTW, my set wasn't that new, maybe 15 or so months old.
  2. If it's streamed (like you say Real player etc.) then you can download a program called Streamripper --- not sure if this is one of those products thta's ok to have but illegal to use though--- anyhow i thought it was far too difficult to use. Best of luck.
  3. Aric, there is a site you've probably seen before but it doesn't have comprehensive info on players set up. A lot more general and doesn't take into account that players often change. Anyhow, here it is.... http://www.mouthpieceheaven.com/content/player.htm always interesting viewing IMO!
  4. Well actually, not as heavy as this.... http://saxontheweb.myforums.net/viewtopic....light=stan+getz the poster danny_tb seems to be au fait with hte mechanics. Having said that, the thing you said to me Jim a few months back when i was querying players set up, something along the lines of "Stan Getz will sound like himself with any piece or reed..." is echoed frequently here. This is a good board to get lots of diverse, divided opinion. cheers, tonym.
  5. Replying to my own thread --- if anyone is interested --- found this.... www.du.edu/lamont/Getz.html Thanks for looking anyway.
  6. Hi all. This may be common knowledge but I haven't found anything on the web yet. I wanted to know what, if anything, Getz changed, when his sound went from that dark one heard during his 'West Coast sessions' period to the 'edgier' one heard later (for example, with Gary Burton)? I heard somewhere he started to use harder reeds. Were there other changes? I'll leave the ball in the experts' court. Thanks, tonym.
  7. The first 40 issued. I won them in a promotional competition from Jazzwise mag in the UK. I already had about 40% of them in the form of the mid '80's cd issues. There are a few of the newer ones that i would like to own, none moreso than the Mode For Joe session.

  9. This one? He's one cool guy.
  10. If you are after just one or two cups of high quality coffee made easy, go with a Gaggia. The model range is quite large and they are very reliable. I use mine 3 or 4 times a day, every day (i drink 2 or 3 espressos per day and my wife may have 1 with steamed milk or cream) and it has served me well for 3 years now. I'm expecting this to continue. No loss of pressure, easy to clean and simple, no gimmicks, construction. For coffee, i buy either Lavazza beans, ready ground or Illy beans. I know someone who owns the Nespresso maker (where you insert coffee 'cartridges' into the casket) but the cost per cup is quite huge. Hope you find what you're after. Tony.
  11. Jim, there is an expert in the US on Beatles discog. etc. contact him on dave@beatlesinthe.us Also Marc Lewisohn chronicled all (?) the bands performances thoroughly, he may have website or info. cheers, tony.
  12. Man Alive!!!! Forgive me if i'm wrong, but no-one has mentioned Getz.... he was pure sound.....ahhh.
  13. You never know, Wim Wenders may get involved and we can see the foot-tapping 'behind the-scenes', 'right at the-heart', 'life-affirming' and 'uplifting' footage of the whole event.
  14. Well, I paid a deposit today on a one year old Selmer Series II. It is bloody fantastic, I should be picking it up next week. It comes with the Selmer mpc and ligature. I have set my mind on a Link HR with Rovner ligature. The opening on the Selmer mpc isn't too big so i'll try the Alexanders again. Needless to say, i can't wait. Thanks for the advice by the way. Feel free to keep talking about all things above though. cheers, tonym.
  15. Gary, apparently they are broadcasting one of his gigs later in the year -- from the Vortex in London. keep an ear/eye open for that one. Usually the BBC Jazz On 3 webpage has upcoming broadcasts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3.shtml cheers, tonym
  16. Another one for Scott to do --- 'When Your Lover has Gone' --- he would really go to town here á la Ben Webster. He'd probably throw in the beginning too (the bit that rarely gets heard)!
  17. Funnily enough, another thread (about the interpretations of 'Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise') got me thinking about which players would be ideal for such a tune. I know we're not restricted to tenormen but I am wondering if Scott Hamilton has ever recorded this one. 'Scuse me if he has (was it any good?). Cheers, tonym.
  18. If you can't beat them....ME, ME, ME!
  19. That's the one Brownie, knew it was one of his later efforts though. cheers.
  20. If i am correct, Stan Getz played soprano on one of his last Concord albums, can't remember which. He also famously 'swapped' his horn with Gerry Mulligan on 'Getz meets Mulligan in Hi Fi' (Verve). If it weren't for the differnet phrasing of each player, it would be very difficult to tell them apart too!
  21. It's interesting reading. Mainly because the market is full of different horns for an infinite number of human shapes and sizes. Two things are clear though --- Good secondhand horns are an excellent choice and also the Yamaha student models seem to get universally good reviews. BTW i have just been made aware that there is a used Selmer series II for just over £1300, which seems great. The thought of owing a Selmer just gives me goosebumps. I was steered away from JK EX90. The local (but nationally esteemed sax repair guy/shop) can basically get his hands on anything, reeds, mps, horns --- the lot. So i trust him implicitly. He's not the type to make a quick buck. Is it true that a lot of jazzmen still prefer the Series II to the III? cheers, tonym.
  22. Thanks for the advice Jim. It's a good thing to bear in mind what you remarked upon re. sound. I look at the Sax forums a fair bit and i get the impression that many players change their set up as much as their socks (ok....bad analogy!) and i don't want that situation. I didn't mention i was going to stick with a hard rubber mpc. The Otto rubber should be nice. I've actually seen advertised somewhere in the UK Keilworths offered fairly cheap, the EX90, in a nice matt finish. They seem to get good reviews. I do agree entirely bout the sound thing. I often think when i switch i won't sound that much different to alto --- just pitched different. Thanks again.
  23. Hi, i'm considering geting a tenor sax. I'm curious however, to know whta the sax players amongst you use regarding model, mouthpiece and reeds. I am tempted to go for a Yanigasawa in bronze with an Otto Link mpc. This should make for a darker sound, which i prefer. Do any of you find that silver plated models do actually give you a brighter sound? Re. reeds, i always liked Hemke or Alexander french cut when playing alto. They were always easy blowing but didn't sound too cutting. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, tony.
  24. You're missing one crucial fact here: These are the only videos (therefore songs) that VH1 show anyway. cheers, tony.
