Yeah, I just tried it. I thought it was about the delay time. I keyed in the first song I could think of 'Yesterdays', then follwed the links; everything fine.
-
Is it the slight delay that you are referring to Jim? I haven't noticed any other problems.

I've been watching a fair bit of MTV 2 over the last year and I've noticed many new - old fashioned bands appearing. These include Jet, The Strokes (well, newish), Kings of Leon, White Stripes etc. Much of it very derivative (what isn't?) but largely enjoyable. Some of the riffs are complete rip-offs of Stooges, Zep etc. but I still find myself tinking "these are quite good". Am I a last chance teenager or is it just the music fan in me; will I always be a sucker for a catchy riff, throbbing bassline and denim? Anyone care to share their fondness for these bands or just pretending you're 17 again? Any rock press critics out there over 40, around the first wave of punk, but still hailing The Strokes as the best thing to happen since The Sex Pistols? Hope you come forward.

Organissimo Picked As One of the Best of 2003
tonym replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Well done. Next stop???? BTW if we had our own Organissimo Hall Of Fame, you guys could be the first inductees. Good idea? -
Hi chibiz. Have a look here. (Look Claude I did it!) You may find what you're after if you explore the likes of 'Earl' Bostic and his bands. That stuff will take paint off. cheers, tonym

Nice one deus. How much did that cost, if you don't mind me asking? I've been meaning to get round to cataloging my collection and Windows Excel was just becoming too long winded.
-
Thanks guys, I've cottoned on.

May I pipe up? I've often wondered (and I think I've noticed you Claude doing it!) how you make a URL into something that specifically describes what you are directing someone to. ie. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showforum=20 into this AOTW ???? (of course that link isn't active) Would this tiny url thing help me do that? cheers, tonym

Student is selling her virginity on the internet

Hey, maybe this is a good way to get hold of the 'Miles at Montreux' set??? I can see it now.... "Well endowed jazz fan is willing to place his body on offer to the highest bidder in order to earn much needed cash for essential purchases at online CD store. Mr. John Smith, aged 33 has all the Plugged Nickel recordings but is missing some of the live electric recordings, is eager to acquire the coveted Miles discs. "I don't see why I should have to toil all week in order to fund my passion for jazz." Ironically, Mr. Smith, who has a turntable too, has never been with a non-jazz fan. He doesn't see any potential risks though. "I'm sure they would treat me the same as all of the jazzers, I've asked a close friend to be on hand with some Ornette Coleman records should things get messy" One bidder, obviously a total deviant, suggested that during the encounter Chicago's Greatest Hits be played AT FULL VOLUME!!! He adds,"It's ridiculous that the likes of HMV and Amazon are asking so much for this set, I wouldn't be in this position if they reconsidered their pricing policy" -
A friend of mine once played a gig in a place like that, tenor sax and rhythm section. He was in the toilets in the interval and a couple of fellas came in, started peeing and said to each other "Good band but I don't think much of that fat bastard on trumpet..." My friend was the big guy. He said later to a bandmate "Aye, I must be bloody good if I can make it sound like a trumpet!" Cheep beer though.

Is that your equivalent of our Affiliated Workingmen's Club? If so, I know what you mean.

That reminds me....is there a Dorsey brothers play-along?

Hey, they found signs of intelligent life on Mars!

So is Dubya about to send in the troops then? Soon get rid of that eh? -
That'd be great Jim, but I find the time constraints of the 45 too limiting --- you know, I've a lot to say and I can't get it all in blah, blah, blah....

I don't have much of his early stuff, I think his early Prestige dates are as far back as I go, but apart from that indecision during his solos, how did he get that tag for being 'out of tune'? And who was it that said that?

Now I am aware that this particular Marsalis has had his fair share of detractors and his comments have often been on the controversial side. But I put this album on the other day while I was getting ready to go out; I bought it when it was first issued and played it endlessly for a few months only to then slot it between 'Citizen Tain' and some other 'young lions'' disc and never put it on again....For some reason.... I think this is actually a pretty good piece. There is one track which starts off with a simple 5 note riff and develops into a great slice of 'free'/hard - bop. There is great playing all around (his tone on tenor is unique I think, can't quite put my finger on who he has been influenced by) and some of the material is brilliant (of course, you have Motian's 'Trieste'). Now that I am in amongst all you guys in the know, I just wondered what you think of this one. Do you have it? / Does he wind you up (but you like his music)? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this/him no matter how inflammatory. cheers, tonym.

Can I Still Return My Wedding Gifts?

Well if we had to keep that floral bedspread with matching dressing gown combo then so should they. -
Yeah but Alexander, it's when you start to recreate the dance steps

Well I love certain feamle fronted bands from the 90's. I'm now listening to The Cardigans' Life. I also love some old Britpop; Pulp, Suede, Blur mostly. Awfully old fashioned but I was partial to Roxy and Bowie when I was in my early teens. I went through a phase of Motown that I sporadically revisit. Gladys Knight, ELO (for crying out loud!) and George Michael are often in the deck. cheers, tonym

I need to listen to more DD to give a qualified opinion but, having heard Freak In, A Thousand Evenings and having seen him live last year I will give my two-penneth worth. Firstly, he is an incredible trumpeter (in terms of tone and articulation IMO -- not too brassy or brazen) and secondly he gathers some fantastic guys around him. BUT I think much of his material is on the weak side and I am certainly not a fan of the Klezmer stuff; I can listen to it, but I would prefer to spend precious money on something else. What is good is great (Culver City Park from Freak.. is one of my CD highlights, old and new stuff included) and he never hogs the limelight, it's all very dynamic and interactive stuff. I've been told on a different thread that his 'Tiny Bell Trio' stuff is great, I also like the idea of his 'Infinite' band -- supposed to extrapolate Miles' 'Filles' band. I was even impressed with his use of electronica and DJ in last years album; it added some musical sense to the proceedings rather than a nod to what was hip at the time. Many of the cuts on his website are remixes so it's hard to get too much of an accurate impression there, I think. My next DD purchase would be Infinite or one of his Winter & Winter albums. Cheers, tonym.

Is this the only Don Pullen album that Adams plays flute on? http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Ayoue4j371wau

Does it have a small group backing or big band?

It always make me realise just how effin' privileged people of my generation are over here in this neck of the woods. Sure we have our own traumas and fears on a 'micro' scale, if you like. But it's been a long time since UK civilians have had to endure anything like that, or indeed anything of the nature of WWII. A guy who served in the Mediterranean in that conflict was drafted when he was 18. He told me about how he crouched in doorways while his company perished all around him. He survived with heavy shrapnell injuries. For children and their parents experience that just totally freaks me out. I've had my fair share of traumatic events and there haas always been light around the corner but when every bugger is in the same boat -- how do you cope with that? Thanks for sharing it with us.

I don't have much by this guy; only Sahara with McCoy Tyner (which certainly kicks arse) and a few things he did with Miles circa Agharta. Certainly plays mean alto. Seems to be the sort of guy that avoids (or appears to avoid) licks. Maybe thats why his modal efforts have been so convincing. I saw a Dave Holland gig a few years back where Antonio Hart featured and I thought his playing was reminiscent of Fortune's. I really should look into some of the things you fellas have been talking about. cheers, tonym
