Jazz collections and estate planning
BERIGAN replied to The Red Menace's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Interesting reading...most everyone seems convinced their collections are or soon will be ....worthless! And record dealers are glad you feel that way! Thing is, if God forbid "you" die in the next few years, the collection is likely worth some decent money. Do loved ones really know this fact? Couldn't hurt to show them what some of your Mosaics or some rare cd are going for right now, on ebay or amazon, just so they know it isn't just you thinking your collection has at least some value. Maybe look up some of the stuff yourself, and put a post it on it to show what the value was as of 2013. If you have a few thousand cds, make a speadsheet of the top 100, valuewise, tell the loved ones to pull those aside to sell, then let the record shop or whathaveyou, haveatit. Last year, I helped a gentleman in his 90s, thin out his LP collection that was in storage(He hadn't spun an lp in more than 10 years, and was paying $140 a month just to store them!) He had first called a dealer , told him about the collection, and the dealer made an insultingly low offer for a few thousand jazz lps(Site unseen, but still) So he then asked me to sell them for him. That's a headache to tell for another day(Nothing to do with him, just that some lps were water damaged, or purchased used in terrible condition, having a bad back, trying to sort things out in a dark storage unit) That's another thought, might save some later legwork for the fam, and since you are the expert on the collection, call some dealers to check out your collection, to see who would, or would not be a good store for them to deal with. Even if some young family member might not be interested in the collection, they might be interested in selling it, could ask them ahead of time. Sure would beat a summer job for some young niece or nephew...or an older one wanting to make some extra moola. If money isn’t going to be an issue after you pass, then BeBops way of winding down a collection is a pretty cool way to go! I don’t think anyone can envision what the value of cds will be in 10, 20, or 30 years. Seems a lot of young folks today love LPs in part because they didn’t grow up with them. Same will be true about cds down the road...heck, hope you didn’t toss any U2, Madonna, or Sex Pistols 8 tracks away, people collect everything.... http://www.ebay.com/sch/Music-/11233/i.html?_sop=16&_from=R40&_nkw=8+track+tapes&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc -

Heh, where to start??? First off...you guys with your modern cars....a 1973 Mark lV, is my daily driver. Have a Sony Betamax(don't use to record stuff anymore) A Realistic Laserdisc player. Can I count my Dad's Mac 60 his Marantz pre Amp, or his JBL speakers, all from the 50's? (and all working just fine, knock wood) -

Finally, Tan Mom has made a music video!!!! http://www.tmz.com/2013/05/19/tan-mom-music-video/ -
Amazing that the Braves have a 4.5 game lead on May 22nd. Never would have believed it possible a few months ago. And that's with BJ Upton(man is that looking like a bad signing right now, guess we all know the NL is the toughest league to hit in now! ) and Jason Heyward hitting in the .150's. Now with arguably the best reliever the past few years in Eric O'Flaherty having TJ right after Johnny Venters having TJ, the bullpen isn't close to being the strongest part of this team anymore. I know the Nats are going to start playing better, it's just a matter of time. How about Evan Gattis? 3rd pitch hit homer of the season last night! 9 Hr's for the season, and as of now he's basically just a pinch hitter/3rd string catcher. You know someone has to be working on a movie about his life, as we speak... And here is a link to Mike Trout's Cycle from last night....

Carlton & McCarver in '72 didn't suck either. (Let's all be nice to McCarver as he's done the decent thing and let his hair go grey on his farewell tour). If one wants to go the All-Star Game route in '69 Bench caught Gibson & Carlton. In '70 he caught Seaver. I quit looking for any other examples than that. Posey is fine catcher and all, but let's see if he even has a career equal Ted Simmons before calling him a "bar none" great. Sheeesh. A Ted Simmons comment, and it's not from me! I'd probably still have to say Gibson-Bench, or Seaver-Bench. how about Bill Dickey-Lefty Grove?

I was wondering the same thing!

Merry Christmas everyone! -
People forget, but 2012 was Dickey's 3rd straight very good year. 2010 ERA, 2.84, 2011, 3.28, and 2012, 2.73 But, at 38, would he, even as a knuckle baller be there by the time the Mets were competitive again? If the talent isn’t there now,(or all that deep on the farm) don’t you have to trade off good players to get back prospects? Now, the Mets financial situation...only because Bud is friends with the Wilpons does it seem they are given a longer leash. If the team isn’t very good in 2013, fans need to stop showing up, that' is about the only thing that gets owners and overlords to pay attention. Weird how both NY teams are acting like they are the Twins with a very limited budget to work with. I know the Yankees Luxury tax was/is going to go up quite a bit, but they are going to have a tough time competing with the Jays, down a few bats and starting pitchers. Now, if only the fans would stop showing up in the Bronx...

Well, the Post office won't be around forever either, just a gut feeling...

The same yapping idiots that wanted Hamilton gone in the first place (i.e. the local sports media) have been going on and on about this powerful Angels lineup that now features Hamilton and Pujols. Seems I recall Pujols had a disastrous year last year, pretty much singlehandedly kept the Angels outta the playoffs, if memory serves. These same chuckleheads claimed that Hamilton will thrive because he's going to be "surrounded by stars." Uh huh. Because that's ALWAYS a good idea. Clearly, brains are not required to work in sports media.... I wish nothing but the best for Hamilton, because he was a HUGE part of the Rangers getting to their first and second World Series, playoff wins, etc etc etc. I realize sports is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately game, but if anyone around here has the gall to boo Hamilton when he returns, then I hope they choke on their Superdog. Not saying I wish he'd re-signed with the Rangers, but he sure as hell deserved a more graceful exit. Furthermore, coming home empty-handed is a helluva lot smarter than blowing money just because the sports hounds say you need to make a big splash at the winter meetings. So many times the "big splash" has come back to bite the Rangers in the ass, a lot more times than I wish to remember! Seriously, the way the Angels are spending money to lose, you'd think Tom Hicks & John Hart had taken over the franchise. I genuinely feel bad for Angels fans. Phat Albert had a terrible...April . 4 RBI's .217 BA. still finished the year hitting .285, with 30 HR's and 105 RBIs. As soon as Mike Trout was called up(people forget he was sick in spring training, lost a lot of weight) everyone on the Angels was better. Now, the Angels have taken a streaky, but great hitter(43 HR's 128 RBI'S which lead the team of course) away from the their chief division rival...and the Rangers don't have anyone yet to replace his output. Who knows what will happen 5 years from now, but for the next 3 years, they will likely be the team to beat. And while there may be more fair weather Dodger fans than Angel fans, the Angels not only have a future HOF'er, they now add one of the best hitters in the game, to a lineup that has Trumbo, Morales, and of course the most exciting player in the game, in Trout. If I lived in the LA area, which team would I pay money to see? Well, which has the more exciting players? Matt Kemp is great, perhaps the best hitter in the NL, but he isn't going to score from 1st on a single like Trout can at any time. Who else is exciting on the Dodgers club? A-Gon? Great hitter, but exciting??? Zack was payed like his name is Sabbathia, but he ain't him...and talk about a guy playing on the wrong team if he doesn't win right away.... Oh well, at least people are talking the teams in LA, and in the AL West.....

Part of a 1962 Cards/Giants game with Harry Caray and Jack Buck(weird to not hear Jack do most of the talking!) man, I put up the highlights from CNN of a bunch of games in the late 80's and it was taken down, and this guy has complete games up! Good for him! Here are Ernie Banks 498, 499, and 500 homers...never seen anyone wiggle his fingers on the bat like he did... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF5nhvi8gOg

I keep waiting to hear that Bud Selig has voided the mega trade, hasn't happened yet. Weird. In fact....seems they will trade off even more players. Weird!

I'm afraid things are going to get worse before they get better...that water is nasty, just like it was with Katrina In N.O. I saw tests they ran on ABC and there is of course sewage in the water...and add the displaced rats, running low on gas everywhere-A friend of mine's fiance was sent up to help set up/fix back up generators, I think mainly for Home Depots in DC, but then got sent to N.J. He and his crew were starving(and this is a skinny dude that has a take it or leave it attitude towards food normally) and having to wait for hours to get fuel themselves before they could help others. Except for a few cases of looting, people have been great so far, but people are cold, hungry, can't shower, and will be on their last nerve very soon. I don't know enough about this right now, I would still say give to the Red Cross, but the Staen Island Borough President is saying DON'T give to the Red Cross! http://politicker.com/2012/11/staten-island-borough-president-dont-give-money-to-the-red-cross/ Just saw this on Drudge, Fuck!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.nbcnewyork.com/video/#!/on-air/as-seen-on/Sandy-Starved-New-Yorkers-Dumpster-Dive/176839571

From what I have been able to gather that make this storm different, is the size(the technical term I believe is fuckin' huge!) that its both tropical and subtropical(like a winter nor'easter, though if you check that link, they don't think it is anything but tropical, yet the Weather Channel just said in the last hour or so that it looked like it was getting more subtropical, but that wasn't really important) Plus there's a full moon and that the brunt of the storm will likely come in at high tide...that is a big deal. Hell, here in the ATL, the sustained Wind was unbelievable last night, and we are far, far away from the storm...

Oh boy, she just about single handedly kept HBO, Cinemax and Showtime afloat in the 80s...can't believe she was 60. Which sounds so old. Yet to die at 60 sounds so young... http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/19/arts/sylvia-kristel-60-dies-starred-in-emmanuelle.html?_r=0

Well, A-Rod does look pretty pathetic at the plate right now, doesn't he, doesn't he? Perhaps when he matures, and is 38 like Jeter, or 40 like Ibanez, he will get his stroke back. Of course, the good news is, both of those players have been considered washed up,(ask a certain Philly fan here what he thought of Raul early in 2011) only to prove folks wrong. But that doesn't help now. Maybe he should just start against lefties, or needs to come off the bench like Ibanez get a hit, to get back on track. Man, that sucks! Don't want to see the Yankees win yet again, but I want to see teams bet the best yankees team, not just a yankees team. I bet they win tomorrow, just because.

It probably is wise for him to rest at this point. I said before since they didn't expect to compete this season(but they should have known anything was possible) started him very slowly, or ala Roger Clemens or Roy Olswalt, and started in June, it wouldn't have been an issue. I think most people would agree it would have better to have him pitching late in the season rather than in April, right? A bit of a moot point now though...but if Gio or Zimmerman(pitcher) miss time next year, and the braves win the division...well, it's wait til next year...but again, I would agree, it can't hurt him(physically) to have this rest... Dave, who would you replace him with? Chavez, who has exactly no hits in 8 AB's? Don't know if these could today's ab's or not... Russell Martin .176 Curtis Granderson .158 Alex Rodriguez .125(ok 2 for 16, not including todays action) Nick Swisher .111 Robinson Cano, the hottest hitter in baseball down the stretch, .091!!!!!!!!! So, I have to ask, why no anger at those guys? Is this strictly based on how much ownership stupidly decided to pay him? Should he have turned their offer down?

I liked what Barry Larkin said, the Nats didn't lose, the Cards WON. I mean, should the Nats (Davy Johnson) taken out a potential Cy Young winner? Possibly. But, it was 6-3 after 5. Should the Cards have taken out Wainwright, way before he gave up 6 freakin' runs???? Of course! Now thats amazing to me. Cards fans would be calling for the managers head today if the Cards lost...But, Satan, er the Cards don't quit. They missed some huge scoring opportunities, then that final tack on run in the 8th making it 7-5. Game over. But, the cards were amazingly patient against Storen, I think just about everyone was saying, no way am I going to be the last out, still...Holiday and I think Craig struck out on low outside sliders...well, the others, Freeze, Molina, etc...just wouldn't swing at that out pitch. So, if nothing good to hit, take a walk. So, Storen had to go to the fastball, and they KILL fastballs. I know everyone and their brother will blame Storen, or Johnson for not having someone else up in case something like this happened. But, nothing like this has happened....no team has come back in an elimination game like they did. So, hats off to the Cards, and if they beat the Giants, really hope they can beat the Yankees(assuming they beat the Tigers, but seeing how the Tigers bullpen sux, it will likely be the Yankees) Jim, surely you'd still root for satan, over SATAN?
