  1. I saw this in Tower the other day and picked up. Only $12.99 and I bet it's cheaper online somewhere. It's GREAT. Louis TV shots from the 50s and 60s. NO BS voiceovers - NO BS commentary. Just Louis Playing and Singing. There's the famous Umbrella Man shot from the Timex show with Dizzy, there's a great Jeepers Creepers with Louis backed by Big T., Tony Parenti, Ruby Braff, Cozy Cole, etc. there's a South Rampart Street Parade where the Lawson Haggart Jazzband (billed as the Bobcats) includes Bud Freeman, Lou McGarity, and Cutty Cutshall.....and theres stuff with the All Stars when Trummy Young and Edmond Hall were on the scene...and more...Hoagy Carmichael, Anita O'day, Hamp, Krupa. WOW! This is the best Louis on DVD or VHS I've seen.
  2. I think it was a Dylan tune the first week. This past week it was Lightnin' Hopkins capping it off. The show cracked me up this week - that had to be the funniest head scene EVER in a movie. Al gets an epiphany while getting head. YES - Bullock's girlfriend ALMA is smokin' !

Jimmy is on my "Get It All" list. I've enjoyed every record I've gotten by him., with a special fondness for The Jazz Oddysey Of Jimmy Rushing, which happens to be the first recording I bought by him when I was a teenage jazz nerd. Sometimes I think that my favorite records by various artists are the first I encountered.
  4. I have the Wichita transcriptions on a Stash cd. I don't think that cd would be too difficult to find, although it is oop.
  5. You left out Feelings and Color My World. Two tunes that I couldn't play without falling asleep on the stand. BARF!
  6. I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I like it a lot. Even if you're a big Motown fan there's a lot here that you haven't heard. It's early Motown, so it's pretty R&Bish with some doowop and a small portion of hokum and novelty thrown in. IOW it's a bit raw compared to later Motown and there's a lot of unfamiliar artists and a lot of B sides that never made reissue before. At the same time, this is music that is definitely trying for pop success. Like the Mosaic Commodore sets, I don't think you'll see these reissued in as complete a form again.
  7. I vaugely remember something about one of the Wilbur De Paris Atlantics being among the first or THE first stereo Jazz record. I think 1957 was the year that Stereo lps first became available.
  8. I love this disc, but my problem is that I can't think of anything much different to say than what I said about Chicken Shack. This is a good reminder to listen to this disc again - I haven't in a while.
  9. Happy Birthday, D.
  10. Yes, the jazz Atkins diet contains a lot of Fats! There's a great album of obscure Fats Waller tunes on the Stomp Off label. It's by Marty Grosz and it's titled.... "UNSATURATED FATS"
  11. I'm revisiting (and enjoying immensely) the first Condon Mosaic.
  12. For a single disc, the new RCA "Centennial Edition" cd that came out last year has a good overview of tunes that Fats is known for and has the added benefit of a DVD consisting of "Soundies" that Fats did. I agree with the previous posts. Dive in anywhere - you can't really go wrong.
  13. Peter Sbarbaro aka Pete Spargo: Saw the obit in the local paper yesterday. Pete was a record producer and the son of ODJB drummer Tony Spargo.
  14. I know I've said it before, but here it is again. The Electric Bass is as valid as any other instrument and properly set up and played, it can swing as much as any bass. The sound can get very close to upright given the right player, techniques, knowledge, etc. The problem has always been that there are a large number of electric players with NO jazz knowledge that occasionally find themselves on the bandstand with jazz guys and can't deliver the goods. i.e. CAN'T swing and dont know the tunes. The bass is taking the blame for the player's lack of knowledge. The same player with an upright would suck just as bad and have rotten intonation too !
  15. Good set. I recently found it used also. The music is great and the notes are beautifully done.
  16. I find it hard to choose between Talking Book, Innervisions and Fulfullingness First Finale. I think all three are great.
  17. There's a place near where I live that has a flavor they call almond joy. It's vanilla Ice cream mixed with chocolate chips, chocolate covered almonds and coconut. Zowie !
  18. ICE CREAM .............. I LOVE IT !
  19. Anybody else see this ? I got right back into it. I taped it and I'll think I'll rewatch it to catch all the dialogue. Looks like it's going to be an interesting season. Allready open hostility between Bullock and Swearengen and a thickening plot between Cy Tolliver and Joanie.
  20. Yeah Chris - great stuff. Thanks.
  21. I think I read somewhere that the noise on Jack the Bear is a result of deterioration of the original metal parts. I really don't find the noise so unbearable that it takes away from my enjoymnent of the music and overall I think that the sound on this set is excellent, and the music is essential. Yes, it would be nice if JackThe Bear was cleaner, but you'll still get the essence of the music. Anybody know if JRT Davies ever remastered any of this stuff ?
  22. Practice, practice, and more practice! I'm practicing right now. the man said: practise more! Believe me, I am. Let me say this about that......
  23. Yeah...this is bullshit. I don't think there's many people posting on this board that hasn't allready bought RAM more than once.
  24. I envisioned an animated Uncle Remus with Leo doing the voice over. Still LOL.
