Drink prices are high - mainly because insurance costs have skyrocketed since the late 70s. Add to that the fact that many patrons are afraid to drink more than one or two drinks if driving is a factor. The days of barhopping in general are over. Too bad - it used to be nice to go to 3 or 4 joints in one night on an off night - and not go broke in the process.

Did Ruby Braff and Teddy Wilson ever record together? While I enjoy both of them immensely and would love to hear them together, I suspect what Ruby really wanted from a pianist was a Count Basie like sparseness.

I think we're entering the dark ages...not to sound like the voice of doom, but the gig scene has been getting continuously worse in my neck of the woods (NYC/North Jersey) since the early 80s. Prior to that - the scene here was vibrant - more gigs than I could handle. By 1989 I had to get a day gig - and I wish I had done it sooner. I'd be making more now and my pension would look better. The guys I know who are still full time are not doing well and have to give lessons - a constant hustle for students - unless you can teach in the public school system. Had my degree been in education and I could have gotten a job teaching in High School - Yeah !....If I had it to do over I'd take that route. What gigs there are pay badly. I'm not involved in the rock scene so I really don't know what happening with that, but jazz gigs are few and far between and my instrument (elec bass) is out of favor. The blues scene is undermined by amateurs who will gig for little or no bread. The club date (catering hall scene) pays well, but is undermined by DJs. You have to play and sing and now I'm finding there is a lot of AGE discrimination happening - you have to look the part. What a lot of crap! The general public was never hip, but now ? JEEESH ! Now and then a good little spurt of gigs comes along - but they are aberrations.

Maybe the "centennial edition" is a tip off that they used the remasterings from the RCA box? They want to let the consumer know that they are "providing" the best mastering "availalble".

Sorry to hear that Chuck ! I hope things take a turn for the better asap. -
Stringer Bell bites the dust
Harold_Z replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yeah...Stringer had some charisma. I was sorry to see him go...but Marlo? I keep on thinking he's there to be eliminated - maybe next episode? I guess that kid is a talented actor - he sure can make you dislike him. Cutty must have a larger part coming up...why else would the producers be "investing" the time in him? I was surprised to read that Elba is English and normally speaks with a British accent. A friend of mine from my office told me that McNulty is from Ireland and speaks with an Irish accent ! These guys can REALLY act !! -
Norman Granz Jam Sessions box set

Now that's a good idea for a thread ...the Christmas presents we are going to by ourselves...I'll bet there's a few Mosaics and other box sets in THAT list. -
I would burn a safety and then check into all direct's return or exchange policy.

Stringer Bell bites the dust
Harold_Z replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I too was surprised that Stringer was eliminated. As said above - he was a great character and this is a great series. I missed most of the first season - I think I'll get the dvd set and catch up. Is Avon going to be put back in jail by Colvin - leaving things open for Marlo? -
Brunswick gave Jackie 50s and 60s "pop" star production on his records when probably most of us would have preferred a harder, jazzier R&B approach. You had to get that side from his gigs. Even when the tunes were the same, the backing didn't have studio voice backings. He WAS one hell of a singer as well as a dynamic performer. In contrast to Babby Hackett - with Bobby it was easier to find purer jazz recordings to contrast the "pop" with - the "poppish" recordings were just one facet.

She was heavily influenced by Dinah Washington and sounded somewhat like her, but yes, more nasally and with a quicker vibrato. For my taste she's absolutley fine. She's distinctive once you know her sound. A lot of her 60s and early 70s recordings have very good R&B session guys - like Curtis, Cornell Dupree, Chuck Rainey, Gordon Edwards, etc...and for me that's a big plus also. Her earlier recordings with Johnnie Otis are tasty west coast early R&B.

Question re the RC Atlantic jazz and live material that didn't appear on the 3 cd set - I have all the original lps. Am I missing anything that later came out on cd?
-
Yeah...he trades choruses and then fours with Fathead on an up blues. Just get the video..this is one nobody should miss......because the total Ray Charles- Fathead - Margie Hendrix - GREAT tunes nexus shouldn't be missed.
-
Just accept it or reject it on it's own merits. No pre-concieved notions.

They're unbelievable ! Mangle them a little and mix 'em in with some ice cream - like Vanilla or Vanilla Fudge..... I keep the Caramel kisses in the freezer.

I took a look at two mono records - both had red labels. "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" Coleman Hawkins "Soul" Also a stereo copy of "Buck And Buddy Blow The Blues" - purple.

I'm pretty much in agreement with what Ed said and also Lon. There is some stuff contained here that is VERY good. I'm glad I have it.

Sangrey - NO Clay! there's a personel listing and he ain't There. The kicker - I guess that's Tina Brooks ! BUT.........I don't konw about that personel listing. That sure looks like Merry Clayton to me but she is not listed.
-
The shortest Raelette there is Merry Clayton. Gimme Shellter with the Stones.
-
Lots of Fathead. Oh my God! What a giant !
-
Got it - watched it - Get it. Absolutely A TOTAL GAS ! Jim Sangrey - pretty sure it is Clay on there. there's one track where they trade a chorus and then fours. People...Don't hesitate - this is the Ray to get.
