Braxton Arista and Freedom set on Mosaic?
BeBop replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I guess this means I should sell off all those LPs now... -
Actually, I was surprised how expensive Benin (Cotonou) was, at least compared to its neighbors and near-neighbors: Togo, Burkina, Niger... But that's beside the point. My scam letter for the day: CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA TINUBU SQUARE LAGOS-NIGERIA. FROM THE DESK OF: MR. LUKMAN YAKUBU DIRECTOR OF FOREIGN OPERATIONS, CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (C.B.N) TEL/FAX: +234-1-49999999 OUR REF: CBN/IRD/CBX/021/08. ATTN:BENEFICIARY. IMMEDIATE PAYMENT ORDER. THIS IS TO NOTIFY YOU THAT YOUR OVER DUE CONTRACT/INHERITANCE FUNDS HAS BEEN GAZZETED TO BE RELEASED, VIA KEYTELEX TRANSFER (KTT)/ DIRECT WIRE TRANSFER TO YOU BY THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN OVER DUE CONTRACT/INHERITTACE FUND. GAZZETED I believe that is when something is sent by gazelle. And wow! In Nigeria, the Senate SENDS money to citizens.

Happy Birthday from your old, old friend, BeBop!

Truly sad. I'm a tremendous Kraftwerk and Neu! fan. It's music that somehow always seemed to reinvigorate ears tired by acoustic jazz. And for driving...

F/S Jimmy Smith, Live at the Village Gate
BeBop replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That's a great one. -
Hampton must be a synonym for "Kool" or "Fujitsu". Even the last of the "Playboys" were better than this.

BeBop seems to have been asleep on this one! Sad but true, although B&N has been a last choice for me because of high prices and lack of coupons/sales (though I will admit to taking advantage of their Concord sale a few years back). Zzzzzzz. Hey, what the... Just got this one, a day late. Better file a complaint.

Good to know, Lon - thanks. But y'know, I've been about halfway through the list in the link posted earlier and, though I've found a dozen or so albums I want that are still around, frankly I just wan't getting a hard on over them. Except the Gonsalves/Eldridge. So, "fuck it," I said to myself, and went off to order half a dozen South African items from a Jo'burg firm, for about $8 each, inc postage. Now THAT was exciting! There are new David Newmans/Houston Persons/Jimmy Ponders/Maceo Parkers that I haven't been moved to order yet, as well. Fails to find smiley for shrugging shoulders elegantly... MG The Gonsalves/Eldridge is good, but not terribly hard to find used. You'll come across a copy. Well, I don't know about Wales...

I'm kind of like a drug 'pusher' in this regard. I think I've posted info on two sales (Concord and True Blue) and a coupon for Borders in the past 24 hours. But I haven't bought any recorded music in six months or more (other than two gifts). And no, I don't work for any of these retailers.
-
Save a quarter (that's 25%, not 25 cents) through the 30th: http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/coupon25non0327.htm
-
Note to self: Buy all the good stuff before tomorrow.

True Blue says "Last Chance on CD" Maybe it's still available on 8-track.

$8.98, less 20% with coupon code "CMG" at http://www.concordmusicgroup.com

That's: http://www.concordmusicgroup.com/

Coupon code "CMG" came in an e-mail hawking some new releases. The e-mail suggests that the coupon is only valid for the items listed, but it covered everything I threw in my cart, including some of those $12, reduced to $9 and $19 reduced to $14 CDs. April 1st RVGs are $8.98, less 20%. No foolin'. So, for what it's worth, check it out.

Ah, James Moody. Wonderful memories of a wonderful cat. Probably the nicest musician I've crossed paths (or horns) with. Wish I had some of that 70s stuff to listen to today: Never Again, Feelin' it Together. Or Running the Gamut (60s) or Flutin' the Blues (50s) I do have an embarassing Moody/birthday story...but I'd better keep it to myself. And blame Leonard Feather for giving me the wrong date.

the "I'm Getting Old and I Can't Find My Teeth"
BeBop replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
"Did you see the smoke when the cat farted in Hamburg?" is the closest on-line translation for this I can find.... HELP!?!?!?!?!? Do you have some reason to believe that this translation is incorrect? -
Referring to CDBaby or the government?

The sale's no big deal, but it's nice to know what's going out-of-print: SALESALESALESALE NEW RELEASE: CHET BAKER BOX SET ON SALE UNTIL APRIL 1 Chet Baker In Paris: Complete 1955-56 Barclay Sessions (Regularly $109.98 - On Sale $99.98) In the span of 6 months, Chet Baker recorded these 8 sessions for Barclay Records in Paris. The first two feature his own quartet with legendary Dick Twardzik on piano. The rest include some of the finest musicians that the fertile Paris scene had to offer including two excellent large ensemble sessions arranged and conducted by Pierre Michelot. Each session gets its own CD so running times range from 20 to 54 minutes per disc. The sound is superb. The 84-page booklet is full of gorgeous photos, new essays and memorabilia. Also Available True Blue Music's Best-Selling Five Modern Jazz Box Sets: Nat King Cole: Complete Capitol Transcription Session Of The King Cole Trio Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis w/John Coltrane Bill Evans: The Last Waltz Dexter Gordon : Complete Trio/Quartet Studio Recordings 1974-76 Wes Montgomery: Complete Riverside Recordings NEW BLUE NOTE RVG REMASTERS ON SALE UNTIL APRIL 1 - ONLY $10 EACH! Lou Donaldson - Here 'Tis This January 1961 session was Lou Donaldson's first with an organ trio. With the exception of Gershwin's "A Foggy Day", this album consists of strictly the blues in all its variety. Donaldson, ever the talent scout, also introduces the formidable jazz talents of St. Louis guitarist Grant Green and Chicago organist Baby Face Willette. Both would make their Blue Note debut albums within a week of the exciting, soulful session. Dave Bailey is the drummer. Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims This 1956 quintet session with Sims, Jerry Lloyd, Ahmed Abdul-Malik and Ed Thigpen is the finest album by this excellent Berlin pianist who moved to New York in 1955 at the urging of Leonard Feather, but retired from music only a few years later. Two additional tunes from the session have been added to the CD. Ike Quebec - Blue And Sentimental Ike Quebec's timeless, big-toned tenor was a frequent visitor to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in the early sixties. But this album from December 1961 with spare, soulful backing from Grant Green, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones is his masterpiece. The leaner setting works perfectly, evoking an aura of relaxation and monumentality, with the deepest blue of accents. Two additional tunes from the session are added to the CD. Freddie Redd - Shades Of Redd Freddie Redd's follow-up to his successful "Music From The Connection" features a unique alto and tenor sax front line and seven outstanding melodic creations. The distinctive blend of Jackie McLean's alto and Tina Brooks's tenor coupled with Redd's composing skills give this album its own outstanding personality. All three solo magnificently with superb support from Paul Chambers and Louis Hayes. Wayne Shorter - The Soothsayer Although not released until 1979, this March 1965 session by Wayne Shorter is a classic. The three-horn front line inspires Shorter as a composer and arranger and Freddie Hubbard and James Spaulding are a fiery pair of soloists. The rhythm section features the unique combination of McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. From the intricate darting "Angola" to the melodic beauty of "Lady Day", this album is just further confirmation of Shorter's genius as a saxophonist and a composer. Horace Silver - Further Explorations Further Explorations in the only album by Silver's quintet to feature Clifford Jordan's strong sinewy tenor saxophone. This January 1958 session includes Art Farmer, Teddy Kotick and Louis Hayes and was also Horace's most ambitious outing to date as composer featuring highly original and unusually structured creations like the 54-bar "The Outlaw" and the haunting 28-bar ballad "Melancholy Mood". Jimmy Smith - Live At The Baby Grand, Volume 1 Jimmy Smith - Live At The Baby Grand, Volume 2 Jimmy Smith's initial success was in the many urban, inner city jazz clubs that dotted America in the fifties. Blue Note decided to venture out of New York and capture their unique new jazz star in his element at Club Baby Grand, Wilmington, Delaware on August 4, 1956. The trio with Thornel Schwartz and Donald Bailey is smokin' and this revolutionary organist plays like a man possessed. Here Comes Louis Smith Memphis-born, Atlanta-based trumpeter Louis Smith was the discovery of Tom Wilson who originally produced this album for his own Transition label but ultimately sold the master to Blue Note, who immediately signed Smith which eventually led to his joining Horace Silver's quintet. The only example of him with Silver is the recently released Horace Silver Live At Newport '58 (Blue Note CD 03163). On his debut here, he is teamed with Cannonball Adderley (billed on the original album as Buckshot LaFunke) and a first-class New York rhythm section. Smith's playing is a clean and inventive as that of his influences Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown. Had he not returned to music education, he would have been a major jazz star in an era of giants. Stanley Turrentine - Look Out! Stanley Turrentine's heartfelt, soulful sound is instantly recognizable. His Blue Note debut from June 1960 finds him with the Horace Parlan trio of the time with George Tucker and Al Harewood, which was one of the busiest rhythm sections on the New York club and recording scene at the time. Few of Turrentine's contemporaries were as adept at blending a taste for offbeat material with a knack for enlivening melodies and sustaining grooves that satisfied a mass audience. The material on this album, which includes three bonus tracks from the session, ranges from standards to jazz tunes by Clifford Brown and Chano Pozo to soulful originals like "Minor Chant" and "Little Sheri." JAZZ CDs SOON TO GO OUT OF PRINT : ON SALE UNTIL APRIL 1 Ernie Andrews & Cannonball Adderley - Live Session (Sale price $10.98) On two occasions, in 1962 at Memory Lane and 1964 at the Lighthouse, Adderley recorded matinee performances by Andrews with magnificent support by his quintet. Andrews is in great form on an excellent selection of songs by the likes of Tommy Wolf, Buddy Johnson and Oscar Brown Jr. Added to the original album are three previously unissued selections. The original three-track tapes have been remixed to 24 bit for greatly improved sound. This album is on CD for the first time. Chet Baker - The Most Important Album of 1964/65 (Sale price $10.98) Chet Baker's first album upon his return from Europe in 1964 was a beautiful quintet date that reunited him with Phil Urso. The rhythm section is Hal Galper, Jymie Merritt and Charlie Rice. The repertoire features a healthy dose of new and old Tadd Dameron tunes. Baker's in fine form and good voice. Chet Baker - Big Band (Sale price $10.98) The Chet Baker Big Band" is a bit of misnomer because the largest group on this record is the eleven-piece ensemble which plays three very hip Jimmy Heath arrangements. The balance of the record is a hard-swinging nonet fronted by Baker, trombonist Bob Burgess, four saxes and a rhythm section headed by Bobby Timmons. Baker, Burgess, Timmons, Phil Urso and Art Pepper are the prime soloists. This album was been newly transferred from the original master tapes in 24 bit with superb results. Jaki Byard - Live (Sale price $14.98) This 77-minute CD contains all but one of the selections of the two volumes of The Jaki Byard Quartet Live At Lennie's On The Turnpike in Boston. This extraordinary music by this strikingly inventive and versatile pianist with Joe Farrell, George Tucker and Alan Dawson was captured on a magic night in Boston in April 15, 1965. The spirit, humor and energy make this creative music a total joy. Stan Kenton - Easy Go (Sale price $10.98) These 20 titles, most never before on CD, represent the great jazz sides recorded by the regular band in 1950-52, including "Viva Prado", "Love For Sale", "Theme For Alto" and "Riff Rhapsody". Arrangements by Pete Rugolo, Gene Roland, Johnny Richards, Bill Russo and Shorty Rogers. Soloists include Conte Candoli, Maynard Ferguson,Bob Cooper, Bud Shank, and Art Pepper. Hank Mobley - Thinking Of Home (Sale price $14.98) Hank's last Blue Note session in 1970 featured Woody Shaw, Cedar Walton and the under-recorded guitarist Eddie Diehl. Like several of his later albums for the label, this magnificent tenor saxophonist emerges as a composer of considerable talent and scope. The title tune is a marvelous three-part suite. Greg Osby - Channel Three (Sale price $14.98) This album is all-out playing. Osby is accompanied by bassist Matthew Brewer and drummer Jeff Watts. Osby tackles Ornette Coleman's "Mob Job" and Eric Dolphy's "Miss Ann" as well as seven originals. This trio burns from first note to last. John Patton - Got A Good Thing Goin' (Sale price $10.98) Patton and guitarist Grant Green are on fire from first note to last. Driven by Hug Walker's drums and Richard Landrum's congas, they perform some of the best work of their careers on the exciting funk session. Michel Petrucciani - Promenade With Duke (Sale price $10.98) A stunning 1993 solo session by this remarkable pianist who finds new and inventive ways to interpret great Ellington pieces. Dianne Reeves - The Calling (Hybrid SACD) (Sale price $14.98) This tribute to Sarah Vaughan features Dianne Reeves in superb form with a full orchestra arranged by Billy Childs and Robert Freedman. Musicians include Clark Terry, Steve Wilson, Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller. This hybrrd SACD was remixed in surround sound from the original multi-track tapes and is playable on all CD players. George Shearing - Jazz Moments (Sale price $10.98) This June 1962 trio session, newly remixed for CD, proved to be the last recording by bassist Israel Crosby. His long-time partner in the Ahmad Jamal trio, Vernel Fournier is on drums. One of Shearing's best. Sarah Vaughan - You're Mine You (Sale price $10.98) Sarah Vaughan's 1962 collaboration with Quincy Jones is issued on CD for the first time, newly remixed with two bonus tracks. Songs include Cy Coleman's "Witchcraft" and "The Best Is Yet To Come" and Bronislau Kaper's "Invitation" and "On Green Dolphin Street." LAST CHANCE ON CD Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins Duke Ellington - Private Collection, Volume 10 Joe Henderson - Lush Life (Hybrid SACD) Joe Puma - It's A Blue World Frank Sinatra & Duke Ellington - Francis A. & Edward K. I'm in today. Far as I know, it's the same government, so I guess that wasn't it.
