  1. I won't be hasty in judging this one. I'm still becoming accustomed to the rather larger-than-I'm-used to Andrew Hill group, which seems even larger, based on the number of instruments involved (two bass clarinet players, alto flute, French horn, English horn...). Hill's playing strikes me as primative-funky, even more than usual. Priester and Farrell have never been my favorites, but I'm being open-minded. I think. It does strike me as odd that this sat in the can for so long. But stranger things have happened.
  2. Well, I think Passing Ships... Sorry, Son-of-a-Weizen, I'll keep my mouth shut Seriously, whenever my guitarist/friend shows up to haul my sorry butt to my mailbox, I'll get to have my first listen to most of the new Conns. (They're all gifts; I didn't have a friend interested in the Rouse, so I didn't pick that one up.) Often, I wish my life was such that I could have a recorded music collection of my own. But sometimes, like sailboats, the best music collections are those of one's friends.
  3. As I bike racer, I suppose I can participate in both/either?
  4. <<Anybody ever order anything from them?>> I've had many good experiences with JandR over the past 15 years or so.
  5. I gave away 5,000 (LPs and CDs). Can you imagine... But no real regrets; I got a new life out of the deal.
  6. Glad to hear this is working for some folks anyway. Since I don't buy recorded music or books (any more), I can enjoy the coupon only vicariously!
  7. Here's a coupon for 40% off 'everything' at Borders. http://chartermi.net/~tb40nd/borders.pdf Then again, maybe not! Don't count your chickens until you read further discussion at FatWallet: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messagevie...threadid=221806
  8. Good thing Hefti took credit for these fabulous lyrics...
  9. Thanks, b3-er. Let's see if I've got it right now...
  10. Yeow! Are these turning out JUMBO sized on everyone's screen, or is it just...
  11. Since my scanner isn't wide enough to scan an LP cover...
  12. Great choice...for the first week during which I will have an opportunity to participate. Yes, I will actually have access to a CD and player for the first time in ages. Looking forward to it.
  13. By the way, keep in mind that the pronoun "me" should be promptly banished from your vocabulary. Henceforth, "we" and, on occasion "she" (with an implied "me too") should substitute. The one exception under which the use of "me" is acceptable is in accepting guilt or responsibility. The voice of experience.
  14. Congratulations, David!
  15. Oh yeah, Pony Express. I've read it a couple of times. I also knew Pony. He comes across as a pretty bitter individual in the book; he was considerably less so in person. He also comes off as conceited or 'a legend in his own mind'; again, that wasn't really my impression of him. All that said - not quite a ringing endorsement - here's one source for the book, along with publisher information, et cetera... http://www.jazzrecords.com/jazzbooks/bio3.htm
  16. Personally, Flagstaff's the only city in the state (among those I've visited which includes probably every city over 50,000 population) that I like. Sedona's good for a laugh. Friends whose tastes I trust claim to like Tucson, but it's never really done anything for me. Still, in terms of scenery and geology, Arizona's a nice place. Just watch out for the silver and turquoise (sp?) jewelry.
  17. Wow! Same as my IQ. How's that for coincidence?
  18. Did Bridgework (w/Harold Land and James Clay on Contemporary) ever come out on CD? I rather liked that one. But I'm a tenor hound.
  19. The Zoot Sims sessions are good. I like Basie Jam, though AMG pans it. And Satch and Josh (Basie/Peterson). The Montreux recordings are okay. The Ray Bryants are among my favorites from his oeuvre (though I don't have lots...).
