I love Joe but he does draw a line in the sand with the types of music he'll bring in! It freaks me to go see some of these players (G. Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson and so on...) and have 30 people show up. I'm always told that Chicago has a lot of other things happening in the city but they also have a lot of people (visitors and tourists) in the city. It's a great club with no pushy waitresses, a cheap cover charge and no drink minimums. It only holds about 150-175 people at the most; they should be packed every week! They (Showcase) may have to be a little more creative on the marketing part of it. Mark

The new "Pay-It-Forward" Music Giveaway Thread!!!

Barak, I wouldn't mind hearing the Washington if still available B-) ? Mark -
I picked up a copy of this recording (Moon Records) and while I like the music (recorded in 1968) the info is a little shaky. It sounds like it's recorded in a studio but in between each track is applause. It sounds like it was added in after the recording as it's very inconsistent. It has Farmer on Trumpet and Flugelhorn as well as Jimmy Cleveland on Trombone. It also lists "Harold Wabern" on piano; is this Harold Mabern??? I can't find this listed in AMG; anyone have any info? I'm not sure what the reaction of the patrons were. If I had been there as I am most Sunday's, I would have been unhappy to see the show end early. Although I'm not a fan of rap, I would have probably thought it funny provided it didn't go past one tune. Joe is certainly a big band, bop, hard bop kind of guy. He certainly will not be convinced to bring any type of music into the Showcase that he doesn't like. He's even a little "sqeemish" about the Roneys/Hargroves/Paytons of the world with the electronics involved. Mark

...sounds like a great show. I'm not sure if I'll be in town but if I am, I'll try to make the show. Hot House is a great room to see a show; the place will be crazy! Mark

....well not really Buster. A few of us went to see Buster Williams at the Jazz Showcase a week ago Friday and the show was very good. While at the Showcase yesterday, I found out that during the Sunday show (the one I usually attend), Buster invited someone from the crowd up on stage to do some rappin' . Buster asked one of the employees to turn the sound up and Joe Segal (sitting in the lobby) heard it. Now those of you who know (or know of) Joe, know that he is not fond (he hates it) of Rap music. He opened the door and told them to turn the board off. Buster kept playing and the guy kept rappin'. Joe then walked in and turned all the lights off !!! bringing the show to a quick close. I was tring to get more details but some patrons strolled in so I didn't get the rest of it. I asked Joe about it yesterday (my boss calls this "stirrin' the pot") and he said he just did what he had to do......man, that's crazy!!! I love Joe!!!! Mark

I went to see Stefon Harris at the Jazz Showcase yesterday with ejp626. I had heard it received poor reveiws earlier in the week but my plans were made. I'm not familiar with much of Stefon's work but went in with an open mind. I though the show was fantastic! Stefon has a lot of energy and his playing was excellent. Not much electronic stuff; maybe a little from the alto player. I wasn't familiar with a lot of his tunes but he played "Summertime" and a track from the movie "Kate and Leopold" which was nice. He played a few tunes from this latest recording. I spoke to him for about two minutes before the show and he appears to be a very nice, soft-spoken guy. Maybe Eric can add something in addition. I tried out a new digital camera that I may buy. I'll download some photographs in the next few days. Mark

....go to a Benny Golson show; he'll tell you the entire story.

...who is your brother? He can catch Mulgrew Miller at the Jazz Showcase both Saturday night and Sunday.

well.....I ran into Charlie Sangrey at Fry's about an hour ago. It took me about 30 "do you know where Charlie is" before I found him. Nice kid witha firm handshake....kinda looks like his old man. Said he's been working from 8-11 (I'm not sure if me meant 8 pm to 11 pm . The place was very busy and we didn't have much time to talk but I told him several of us were checking up on him....I also told him that messy bed room is top priority when he gets home! Some how I don't think he believes it is . Mark -
I saw him last year and they referred to him as Dr. Byrd but he didn't go to medical school . I'm not sure he plays that much anymore. Mark

...both for me!

I thought I read in the liner notes that he does. I'll check again; maybe I'm going blind ! Mark

Travelling to Paris, France

Maxim's was very famous at the turn of the 19th Century! And it still looks very 19th Century! It was bought by Pierre Cardin a couple of decades ago. Nothing exceptional about the food except it's VERY expensive! A place to avoid! ....and they did a great Sanka or Folgers commercial years ago . -
Who knows. It seem as though his arm was fine with many pitches in the low to mid nineties. He wasn't wild (didn't walk anyone) but threw quite a few pitches, especially in the 2nd inning when he gave up 4 runs. Probably not a lot of movement on the ball early as the AAA batters were not fooled and were hitting the ball hard. He didn't get his first K until about the third inning and that was on a batter fouling off a bunt with 2 strikes.

I just got home from the game which Indianapolis won by one. Schilling didn't look too good giving up 8 or 9 hits, three home runs and 7 runs. He was pretty shaky but got a little better as the game wore on and may have ended up with 6 K's. He pitched 6 innings which is longer than I thought he would go. He was walking with a noticleble limp and wasn't too quick to field many balls his way but I'm sure this will get better with time.

I'll try not to be too rough on him! m- -
I'm going to see Curt Shilling pitch today provided the weather holds. He's doing a rehab assignment again the Indianapolis Indians at 2:00 today. It's raining now but I think it's suppore to stops soon. They keep the field covered but.....who know if they'll pitch Shilling in the shitty weather??? If the game goes on, I'll post a couple photos in the near future. Mark
