  1. I went to see Joey DeFrancesco last night and stayed for both sets. Very good show with lots of energy from the trio of Joey, Byron Landham on drums and a fairly new guitarist, Jake Langley. Lots of smiling and laughing going on between Joey and Byron all night They were a little late arriving as Joey had issues with his speakers and had to stop at a local dealer to pick up a new pair. This was a tribute show to Jimmy Smith so they played several songs off of the new cd, Legacy. In addition to the title track, they played "When You're Smiling" a nice balled called "I'll Close My Eyes", "I've Got My Mojo Workin'" with Joey on vocals, a 15 minute rendition of "Back Home Again in Indiana" for us "locals" , "Laura" and they finished up the first set with and extended version "Dot Com Blues" The second set got going with "Love for Sale", a 20 minumte version of "Just Squeeze Me", follow by another three tunes that I didn't recognize and then a great finaly of McGriff's "All About My Girl". During this tune Joey got on his knees on the organ stool and played and then stood on the stool and did the same. If you've never seen a grown man play the B3 with his ass , let alone a man the size of Joey, it's quite a site to behold B-) . Mark
  2. TJADER is butchered frequently;.......how do you say it???

  13. now i'm glad i didn't attend the sunday afternoon show as planned. i did attend the 8pm set later that day and didn't observe any obvious conflict or friction. in fact, i thought the quartet performed better than it had during friday's late show, although the company was certainly great that night! thanks mark, sal, and eric. Jazzshrink, Good to see you on-line. I hope you had a good time in Chicago; wish we could have hung out a little longer! Mark
  14. I have a disc to offer up to the first person that PM's me! ~Sonny Side Up with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins Mark
  15. While I'm not saying it's cool to kill the lights. I really, really (really) believe that most of these guys have played the Showcase many times and know what Joe is looking for when they are booked. Maybe Buster didn't think it was a big deal but Joe did. When Joe intros the bands and make comments like "You're in for some real music, not that rap crap B-) ", I'm not sure I'd have someone rapping, but that's me!!! It may have been a friend of Busters; I doubt if it was just some guy sitting there that talked him into letting him just up on stage. From the crowds Joe typically draws, I would suggest they may not be there to listen to rap. Hell, they get uneasy when Benny Golson tells his stories !
  16. Plantation???? It was bad but I'm not sure it was that bad!!! It's as if both of them just accepted it and went on with life. I've taken the liberty of rearranging the sequence of your words to, perhaps, illuminate my point, such as it is. Think about it, though - if somebody had pulled a stunt like this on Mingus, what do you think would have happened? OUCH! I'm sure Mingus would have kicked some ass (he may not have done it to Mingus ). I'm certainly not in agreement with killing the power during the show. Maybe letting the show finish and saying something afterwords may have been more appropriate! Why make the paying customer suffer??? m-
  17. I just saw this thread today (where have I been ). I'll pick up a copy in the near future; Congrats Laton! Mark
  18. I asked if there were "words" after the show about the situation but was told that neither one of them mentioned it! It's as if both of them just accepted it and went on with life. I wish I had been there to witness it but chose a different day to attend. I think they both need each other to survive! Mark Plantation???? It was bad but I'm not sure it was that bad!!! B-)
  19. ....that's what I thought!
  20. .....brought to you through the courtest of love !
  21. Although I'm not a big fan of the electronic stuff and I came to the show yesterday kind of expecting to be a little dissapointed due to the review (damn critics B-)! ), I thought Stefon played his ass off and I would certainly go see him again. Although I'm sure Joe doesn't tell them what to play, I would bet most artists that know him probably have a good idea of what to "bring". I dig the older guys but think Joe probably needs to keep guys like Harris and the younger guys coming in to keep things fresh. Eric and I talked about this at the show the other day. Joe does some advertising but are the younger crowd reading those particular papers....our guess is "probably not".
