wow...I had no clue on any of these. (other than identifying an easy tune or two) I think this is one of the first times I have been so completely stumped.
-
I still can't believe Bill Clinton said Brotzmann was "his favorite living saxophone player" or words to that effect. Somehow I have trouble picturing Bill and Hillary sitting back listening to Machine Gun.
-
I am sad to hear that my review had such an effect. That was definitely not its intent. It's OK - it looks like the label (Slask) is defunkt now (the owners obvously earned millions on Birmann's record and cashed out), so this CD won't be around for too long. seriously, though...how would you compare it to the Nefertiti disc on Ayler?

See, your review made me want to hear this album even more! I need help. Does Mr. Bortswan sound anything like that nice Kenny G fellow? Sometimes, when the misses and I have company over, and we want to liven things up a bit, we'll throw on some of that there "oven gard" jazz, like Kenny G or John Tesh (Sax on the Beach is a rip-roaring good time!) and just cut loose.

Ramones guitarist losing battle with cancer
John B replied to dave9199's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've been hearing reports today that the prognosis is nowhere near as grim as Marky made it out to be in the article posted above. I'm hoping this is true and Johnny stays around for a long time to come. Gabba Gabba We Accept You, One of Us! -
I'm hoping, for the sake of my wallet, that it is the worst album you have heard in a loooooooong time. Otherwise, I will have to purchase it and I am already adding far too many discs to my next mental order.

Let us know what you think! I hope you enjoy your choices.

rune grammofon has announced that an upcoming Supersilent show in Oslo will be recorded and released as a dvd in 2005. I will definitely be looking forward to that. It would be interesting to see them live. Their first North American show will be happening in San Francisco later on this year. Hopefully a U.S. tour would not be out of the question.

I have several including 'For Adolphe Sax', 'Nipples' and 'Live At Nefertiti'. The Nefertiti is the one I like best. In that case I would recommend holding off on Balls and getting some more recent Brotzmann instead. Never Too Late But Always Too Early on Eremite or any of the Die Like a Dog discs on FMP would be my suggested starting point. I'm also a fan of the WELS Concert on Okkadisk.

It isn't one that I return to all that often, and it wouldn't be at the top of my list of essential Brotzmann's but it is a solid set.
-
Yup, and that's all quite a surprise, but again a sign that Brötzmann has really developped! ubu I'm still waiting for the Brotzmann - For Lovers compilation to come out. SOmeone who hadn't listened to Brotzmann in a few years would be very surprised by how lyrical and melodic (relatively speaking) he can be these days.

.:.impossible - I did a quick search and came up with this site: http://www.salsaboston.com/clubguide/ which seems to list all of the clubs in the Boston metro area that feature latin music. I hope this helps.

Anders Gahnold Trio - Flowers for Johnny (Ayler) I'm just finishing disc one of this set and am loving this album so far. The sound is fantastic and Johnny Dyani is in top form here. Gahnold is playing well, although I prefer his work on ...and William Danced. Ayler is quickly becoming one of my "buy all releases labels." I have yet to hear a bad disc from them.

I'll keep that in mind tonight if you keep it in mind the next time you're browsing the Mosaic catalog.... B)

My plans for after work just changed. The FYE down the road has all three sets in stock for $14.99. There is no way I can pass this deal up. This board has cost me more money than I care to think about...

Ramones guitarist losing battle with cancer
John B replied to dave9199's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes... I love that record! (2-LP set, actually.) Had it on vinyl when I was a kid--it's a 12/31/77 England show, correct? I need to grab the CD one of these days. Correct. It is a great performance that was, for some odd reason, unavailable in the U.S. for a number of years. The reissues of the first two albums (demos on the first album the concert gom mentions on the second) are fantastic. Highly recommended. -

that is a shame. The Ramones have had a tough few years recently. They were one of the most important rock bands of all time, imo. Time to pull out It's Alive tonight. -
The review on AMG of this disc is awful, imo. The disc itself is really solid. Nothing essential, but some nice playing from Murray, Doyle and even Nordstrom, although the liner notes downplay his abilities at this performance. edit - I would, however, caution those of you who can't stand vocalizations on your jazz albums. Arthur Doyle gets going with some howling and yodeling that is definitely not for all tastes.

I will either change genre completely and listen to some reggae or eai or punk, etc... or just give in for a bit and listen to nothing. Every once in a while I find it nice to "clear the cobwebs" from my head and come back to my collection with fresh ears.

A lot of Irakare's work doesn't seem to be easily accessible in the U.S. Their Greatest Hits album, which is half live, if I recall correctly, is an excellent starting point, if you don't already have it. For Chucho on his own, I would start with the live Village Vanguard disc: The performance is fantastic! I have enjoyed all of his discs that I have heard, but this is the one I return to the most.
-
I have never heard The Flam. I guess I need to add it to my next purchase order. If you ever get a chance to see Alex Blake perform live do whatever you can to be there. The records I have heard with him on them are great, but they do not come close to capturing the energy and excitement he generates live. My Ayler order arrived last night, so, if I have time to start listening to these discs today, reviews will be forthcoming.
-
I'm giving this one another listen today. Not an earthshaking album, but very, very nice. I definitely recommend this one to all Funny Rat friends. (now if my package from Verge would just hurry up and arrive so I can continue my Ayler listening marathon...)

There is an interview with Pete Cosey in the new issue of Signal to Noise that got me thinking about how little recorded out put there has been from him in the past 20 years. Other than the Akira Sakata disc, the one Herbie Hancock disc and the Burnt Sugar album, which I have yet to hear, I am unaware of anything worth listening to featuring his guitar work. Has anyone here heard his band Children of Agharta, with Gary Bartz? On paper it sounds interesting, and I am wondering how it worked live.

Sucks. B) You know, that disc isn't half bad. Who knew?
