Disc three of Golden Years vol. 1 is not going to be getting a lot of play in my house. Ponomareva's vocals annoyed me right off the bat. I'm not a big fan of jazz w/ vocals, so I don't know how "fair" my dismissal of this disc is. I'm looking forward to disc four, the Anatoly Vapirov material. Hopefully it is closer to discs one and two, which are fantastic.

I'm ordering the '99 show as well as the Deember '87 show. I'm still trying to decide between shows from '90, '93 and '97 to complete my order.
-
Their first show is one of the 20 they have up for sale. I might pick it up at some point, but it is not one of my first four choices. I'd love to see those videos someday, but I'm much more interested in the cds, as I'll listen to them a lot more than I would ever watch a video. I've seen Fugazi live two or three times over the years and always had a great time at the show.

This disc has been on my want list for quite a while now. I am really looking forward to hearing it someday. If the rest of set 1 and set 4 are as strong musically as these two discs have been I will be ordering sets 2 and 3 very soon. Thank you for the additional recommendations! I enjoyed Guyvoronsky very much, and look forward to exploring more of his work.

directly from Leo. Shipping is only about $2, regardless of how many discs are ordered.

I wanted to give a quick thumbs up to Golden Years of the Soviet New Jazz volume 1 on Leo. I have listened to the first two discs so far ( Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky / Vladimir Volkov and Sergey Kuryokhin) and the music is fantastic! These sets are also very reasonably priced, making it well worth the while of anyone who might be interested in this music to take a chance and order a set.

That must be it, the site was working earlier. If you look at the main page of the Dischord site they provide a link to the live fugazi site. Hopefully they will fix it soon. I printed out all of the info I needed and will be ordering four of the 20 shows tomorrow. Which one did you order, Stefan? as of 4:00 (est) the link has been fixed.

I know there are a few fans of Fugazi on the board, so I thought I'd post something I just saw. Fugazi records all of their shows and are releasing 20 of the directly. I am very excited about this, as I've wanted some high quality live Fugazi for years and the price they are charging is fantastic. From their website: http://www.fugaziliveseries.com/ "For many years, Fugazi has made a point of taping our live shows. We started out using a simple cassette recorder, moved on to a digital audio tape recorder (DAT) and finally just burned straight on to CDs. Our past attempts at releasing a definitive live show proved fruitless as we could never settle on performances we all felt represented the band at it's best. Instead it was decided that some day we would try to find an easy way to make as many of the tapes available to people as we could. Most shows are on one disc and will be available for $8. Longer sets were put on 2 discs and will be available for $10. This site marks the beginning of that concept - a basic testing of the waters to see what, if any, interest there is. We have digitally transferred an initial sampling of tapes from our archives and for every order we receive, we will burn a CD copy of the show requested using a generic cover with concert information and a track listing. These are very much the original recordings without any attempt to correct for things like volume changes, strange mixing effects, or the occasionally out-of-tune guitar. Though the sound quality on these tapes does vary, if a show was too poorly recorded it didn't make the cut. There will be more shows added as interest indicates and time permits but for now here's twenty. "

I love Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey / Garvey's Ghost. Great recommendation!

by the way, I was just browsing Dennis' website and noticed that his 1981 album Music from Ancient Texts (as well as five other albums in the 80's) features a sax player named "Jim Sangrey" on tenor and soprano. I wonder whetever became of him?
-
I just received this one in the mail from Dennis last night. What a great disc! I would very highly recomend this. Great playing by all involved (the reeds players are Andrew Lamb and Tim Green) and a very nice opportunity to hear some more great work by Malachi Favors. The liner notes mention a project called "New DallasOrleansSippi," featuring Dennis with Kidd Jordan, Charles Brackeen, Malachi Favors and Alvin Fielder. Is anyone familiar with this group and did they record? AMG is not helping here. edit - OK, the album is called DEBENGE DEBENGE on Silkheart. I'll need to track down a copy of this one.

Marco Eneidi/Lisle Ellis/Peter Valsamis touring...
John B replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I also saw Hill's quartet last year (with Greg Tardy on tenor, and Nasheet Waits on drums, forget the bass player). This group last night was quite a bit more 'out/free' than Hill's group. And a whole hell of a lot LOUDER. You know your family better than anyone else -- but I can't imagine if they didn't like Hill much, that they could find anything of interest in this piano-less trio from last night. I loved them, cuz they really made it work. I normally don't care much for music that is that free, though I do appreciate it on some level. But perhaps it was the venue (a bar that normally programs thrash rock bands (I think), and perhaps it was the late hour (they didn't start playing until probably 11:30pm - and played until just after 1am) -- but I really was able to connect with all that chaos last night. Leave your aunt and uncle at home, would be my advice. Your wife is your call, but at least bring earplugs for her (and for yourself). I forgot to bring them, and my ears are still ringing (very slightly) this morning -- about 9 hours later. But man - they were a hell of a group. RT - no problem with you quoting my PM. I called my aunt to give her a heads up and they are still planning on attending the show. I really have my doubts that they will "enjoy" the show, but they are very open to new experiences and I am sure they will appreciate the experience. We will all be bringing earplugs, that is certain. I am also glad this show starts at 8:00, because I sure don't feel like getting home at 2:00 on a worknight. (Damn, I sound old....) I'll let you know how everyone reacts next Wednesday. -

Thanks for the review RT! I am really excited about this show but will really need to give my aunt and uncle a chance to reconsider attending. This doesn't sound like it will be their speed at all. The show in Vermont is free, so, if anyone is in the area and on the fence about checking out a show like this, this would be a perfect opportunity. -

Let us know how the show is! I'll be seeing this group in 9 days in Vermont. My wife, aunt and uncle will be going with me, and I am a bit concerned that this show might be a bit too loud and free for them. They'll go to the show either way, I just would like to give them the opportunity to bring earplugs, if need be. I highly recommend the disc on Eremite - Cherry Box - that PLM mentioned above. -
Comedy Central's Top 100 Stand-ups of all time

I didn't read past #100. Seeing Gallagher's name anywhere on this list immediately invalidated it for me. -
Verge has Willisau listed for $23 Canadian, which is just over 14 euros.

John, Where did you pick this one up? The Music Resource can't get it anymore, Cadence's overseas shipping rate is a bit steep and I couldn't find it anywhere else. I either got it through Verge or Cadence. It was probably Verge, but I don't believe they have it in stock anymore.

Relatively-progressive piano trio recs in the 60's
John B replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Hat recently added The Dark Tree as a midprice title. I would highly recommend starting with this one. -
a few who haven't been named so far: Tina Brooks Fred Jackson Alan Shorter
-
Have you heard Dreadlocks Dread? That's the only Big Youth I've picked up so far and it is a lot of fun. I had never really given the melodica a thought either way until hearing Augustus but these albums are fantastic! I also really like King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown. (Augustus Pablo w/ King Tubby)
-
This could grow to be a huge list. I'll start with a few non-Marley discs I consider to be essential: Augustus Pablo - Original Rockers (A friend of mine who is a huge reggae / dub fan called this disc the "dreadest album ever.") Augustus Pablo - East of the River Nile The Congos - Heart of the Congos (the 2 disc Blood and Fire set sound much better than the older version and has some nice extra material) The Gladiators - Trenchtown Mix-up Culture - Two Sevens Clash I know I need to get some Lee Scratch Perry, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've been told the 3cd Arkology set is the way to go. speaking of the Skatalites, I would also highly recommend Tommy McCook's Blazing Horns/Tenor in Roots, also on Blood and Fire. He was a founding member of the Skatalites and this set is a lot "jazzier" than the other discs I mentioned.

STEP ONE: buy another Mosaic STEP TWO: buy some cds at Tower's Blue Note Sale STEP THREE: buy an OOP Hat disc on ebay etc... Excuse for my wife: "I didn't get enough validation on the Organissimo board tody so I had to spend another $300 on cds. It is all Chaney's fault!" B)
-
It wasn't too long ago, before this was reissued, that someone paid over $300 on ebay for this one. Pays to be patient sometimes. "2Pac : Nu-Mixx Klazzics " I always get this one confused with the Bix Beiderbecke Nu-Mixx Klazzics set.
