  1. I will either change genre completely and listen to some reggae or eai or punk, etc... or just give in for a bit and listen to nothing. Every once in a while I find it nice to "clear the cobwebs" from my head and come back to my collection with fresh ears.
  2. Nice to see Vijay Iyer get some recognition. I've really enjoyed all of his discs that I have heard.
  3. A lot of Irakare's work doesn't seem to be easily accessible in the U.S. Their Greatest Hits album, which is half live, if I recall correctly, is an excellent starting point, if you don't already have it. For Chucho on his own, I would start with the live Village Vanguard disc: The performance is fantastic! I have enjoyed all of his discs that I have heard, but this is the one I return to the most.

I have never heard The Flam. I guess I need to add it to my next purchase order. If you ever get a chance to see Alex Blake perform live do whatever you can to be there. The records I have heard with him on them are great, but they do not come close to capturing the energy and excitement he generates live. My Ayler order arrived last night, so, if I have time to start listening to these discs today, reviews will be forthcoming.

I'm giving this one another listen today. Not an earthshaking album, but very, very nice. I definitely recommend this one to all Funny Rat friends. (now if my package from Verge would just hurry up and arrive so I can continue my Ayler listening marathon...)

    Pete Cosey

There is an interview with Pete Cosey in the new issue of Signal to Noise that got me thinking about how little recorded out put there has been from him in the past 20 years. Other than the Akira Sakata disc, the one Herbie Hancock disc and the Burnt Sugar album, which I have yet to hear, I am unaware of anything worth listening to featuring his guitar work. Has anyone here heard his band Children of Agharta, with Gary Bartz? On paper it sounds interesting, and I am wondering how it worked live.

Sucks. B) You know, that disc isn't half bad. Who knew?
  8. before the accident Teddy had been drinking vodka with O.J., so everything is still on topic.
  9. a quick search for "andrew hill" turned up this discussion: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=andrew+hill This might contain the information you are looking for.

this disk has been mentioned before hereabouts. Can't point you to the thread right now, but reactions were positive to very positive and beyond. I guess this is not the music to jump out and catch you at the troath, none of the tunes has stuck with me either. The mood is brilliant though and so is the playing. This music is not made to stick but by its overall character and that's just fine and dandy. your assessment sounds about right. I'll spin it again today and see what I think. Right now I'm going through a solo disc fest. Two solo Randy Weston discs and a solo sax disc by Gianni Gebbia, Arcana Major. Anyone here ever hear of this disc?

Going back to the bass player discussion for a minute...I saw Alex Blake in concert with Randy Weston two days ago and was extremely impressed. He was on fire that night and really made me sit up and take notice. I bought his live album recorded at the Knitting Factory and was very impressed on first listen. Great album, unless you hate bass solos.

    Alex Blake

I saw Randy Weston in concert Saturday night and had a great time! It was one of the best jazz shows I have been to in a long time. While the whole band was excellent, I had a revelation watching Alex Blake on bass. I have never seen anyone play upright in the way he did. He was seated throughout the entire performance, although, a few times, it seemed as if he was getting so animated he would take flight. His style reminded me more of an electric bassist. I have never really taken notice of his work, although I have a few discs that he appears on. I will need to remedy this asap. I purchased his live disc with Pharoah Sanders after the gig and am really enjoying it. Does anyone have recommendations for other albums where his work on the bass really shines through? If Randy brings this group anywhere near you I highly recommend making every effort to see them. (Plus, they were selling his Mosaic select for $35 at the show. I couldn't resist and now own my first select.)
  13. John, you have admin options far down, left side, choose "Delete Topic" and gone it is! ubu Thanks! I didn't realize the option was located there. Threads deleted.
  14. B3-er is it possible for one of the admins to delete the empty messages I posted in the Artists forum this weekend? I don't see any options for me to do so. thanks!

getting back to Aphex Twin-ish music for a minute, I would also recommend this disc: Autechre - Draft 7.30 Not as good as Tri Repetae, but still very solid. Great cover art, imo.

I don't believe I have ever heard her. What does she play / contribute? Cello, violin and (the main reason for my dislike of the CD) voice. I'm really not a fan of vocals in jazz, so this concerns me. I'll probably still pick up this disc and give it a chance.

I just listened to this disc again today Lee Konitz / Don Friedman / Attila Zoller - Thingin Pleasant enough...I enjoyed listening to it, but nothing really stuck with me. It could have been the multiple distractions in the office today. I'll have to give it another shot. Is anyone else here familiar with this disc and have any thoughts?

I just listened to Steve Lacy's Clinkers again. Great disc! I need to get some more Lacy. The mid-price Hats (NY Capers, Cliches and Morning Joy) are looking very tempting...
  21. I haven't had time to collect my thoughts on this disc yet but wanted to stop in and say that I have really enjoyed listening to it. A few tunes I know but, for the most part, am clueless as to the musicians. I still plan on adding my guesses to the discussion. It has been difficult to avoid looking at the guesses that have already been made!

Another recommendation, this one for anyone who has become interested in electro-acoustic improv: Trapist - Highway My Friend (hatOLOGY) This disc features Martin Brandlmayr (drums and percussion) and Martin Siewert (guitar, lapsteel and electronics), who also appear on my favorite Erst, Too Beautiful to Burn, along with bass player Joe Williamson. This disc is more accessible than most music in this genre but is still fairly abstract, for the most part. I would not recommend it to anyone who avidly disliked La Voyelle Liquide, unless they were interested in approaching this music from a different angle. The electronics are very well mixed into the overall sound of the group.

Has anyone here heard this disc: Cooper-Moore - Deep in the Neighborhood of History and Influence (Hopscotch) This is a live solo set recorded in Guelph in 1999. Cooper-Moore travels from fiery Cecil Taylor-esque avant garde to blues and swing as he pays tribute to the musicians that influenced and inspired him. The recording sounds great and this is some of the best Cooper-Moore I have ever heard. It is nice to hear him step out from the sideman's role he usually plays and really stretch out. Highly recommended.
  24. I take offense at that, .:.impossible! Seriously, you have some good points there. Life is too short, and there is way too much great music I want to explore, to waste time getting worked up over what someone else does or does not listen to. (although I am posting this message rather than switching cds, so forget what I just said) I also just learned I need to pick up the Khan Jamal album. I have only heard him as a sideman on some of Jemeel Moondoc's albums.
