  1. Thanks for the news, King. I'd heard similar things about Reece and Jordan when the Selects were brand new, but lately haven't heard anything. A Complete Eddie Costa Mosaic (old style) would, I agree, be very nice indeed. And I like Roger's idea of a Select of jazz soundtracks. Many of these are hard or impossible to get now, or expensive imports.
  2. 10 and 8. Too late, we already saw it. They didn't seem scared by it so much as bored. It was too long and talky for them. It was kind of art-film-meets-comic-book-actioner so it was too adult for kids but still sort of stupid. And why did they have to make the Hulk ten feet tall? As I recall, in the comics he was barely seven feet tall. In some scenes he looks 12 feet tall. That's just silly.
  3. My kids want to see this, so we may be going. It's got Jennifer Connolly doesn't it? Can't be all bad.
  4. Another vote for that. Also, how about a Pepper Adams Select, bringing together good stuff he did for various labels?
  5. Clifford Jordan and Dizzy Reece. Especially Jordan.
  6. Really? Fiddler's worth getting? How does it compare to some of his other albums?
  7. Has anyone got the new Verve Cannonball Adderly re-issue that just came out? Originally a mid-fifties Emarcy album titled Julian Cannonball Adderly, and yes, it's a digipak, but aside form that..... So far I really like it. J.J. Johnson is on part of it, Jimmy Cleveland on the rest. Either Kenny Clark or Max roach on drums. Anybody else digging this? (OK, I just realized I should have put this under the "re-issue" heading, but it's too late now.)
  8. You and me both! What the Hell is the holdup on that, I wonder? It's not like it won't sell.
  9. I like him in Captain Horatio Hornblower. (Directed by Roul Walsh.)
  10. Good point, Mule! I'd buy a Complete SCTV set in a digital second.
  11. Forgot to mention: Benny Carter: 3,4,5--The Verve Small Group Sessions This one's been a musical easy-chair of mine for roughly a decade. Musical comfort food, old slippers, call it what you will; I love every second of it.

  13. Berigan, you should send this in to Leno.
  14. As I recall, they ALMOST played Hawkins' 1939 "Body and Soul" all the way through. Thanks a lot guys.
  15. "Blues For Brenda"--YES!!!!
  16. Big Six is great. Real nice sound to it, good arrangements, good playing. I don't think I've ever heard a bad performance by Fuller. Any of his sideman dates are probably worth getting just for him (although admittedly he is one of my favorite trombonists). I personally think the Mosaic box is a must----don't worry, you can stop there.
  17. Lately I've been listening to some old Velvet Underground and Brian Eno albums after giving them a long rest. Usually when I want some rock'n'roll I dig out some Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, early Ramones, Undertones, or Nick Lowe. Or whatever. Depends on the mood.
  18. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, GoM!
  19. As far as I can tell I've had something like that since I was about 17. It got worse in my 20's though. Right now it's
  20. I don't believe in IQ tests. Unless I happen to get a high score, then I kinda-sorta believe in them.
  21. I'd like to see the complete St. Elsewhere, with all the original music, and the complete Freaks & Geeks (that one should only be a couple of discs). Speaking of recent good series that were strangled in the cradle, so to speak, having every episode of The Job on DVD would be nice. I'm missing one or two episodes due to videotape breakage.
  22. That's probably gonna be my next pickup. I'm looking forward to hearing more Dupree Bolton as well.

    Hank Mobley

Not only was he a good composer, he consistantly gave his tunes witty names, a rarer talent than you might think. "Don't Get Too Hip," "Funk In Deep Freeze," ---dozens more like that. These are great titles.
  24. Force of Evil is one of my favorite films! And I agree Garfield doesn't quite get his due, even now. He was literally hounded to death by HUAC. Sad. But that film also has an excellent score, great b&w cinematography, and Abraham Polonsky's direction is top-notch. A real gem. Last film I saw was Finding Nemo, with the family. Pixar are about the only ones out there making good, entertaining family films.
