Another vote for Shiny Beast! I like a lot of Beefheart, but seem to play that the most lately.

Considering how many older Conns have been released as RVG's later, perhaps someday we'll see Ready For Freddie and Davis Cup as domestic RVG's. I hope so, because I completely missed the Conns of these two when they were in the stores.

Vibes---the Delmarks are a great place to start, not least because they are produced by Tom Wilson (of Transition label fame) so they're sonically cleaner than most other early Sun Ra. Great music too. Supersonic Jazz and Jazz In Silhouette are also good starting places, sort of a sci-fi B-movie version of Ellington. I've also got to second the recommendation for Futuristic Sounds and Greatest Hits, although the latter has some overlap with many other albums of course.

You are one cosmopolitan dude, Brad!

Ubu beat me to this, but I'm gonna say it anyway: Monk recorded his best stuff for Riverside. They also put out a ton of other great music. And Contemporary has got to be one of the best West Coast labels of all time. If memory serves, Rollins' "Way Out West" was a Contemporary album.

Yes! Try "This Is Criss!" a 1966 Prestige. You won't be sorry.
-
I always thought Getz should have released an album titled "What Stan Wants".
-
That's what I heard, John; Weston himself didn't want Destry re-released. If it's that bad, maybe he's got a point. His call, if it's anyone's.
-
A considerable chunk of the Getz box consists of the Live at the Roost material, which you may already have. Still worth having, though IMO.

Keep in mind that Gioia's "The Imperfect Art" came out back in 1988----about a decade before his History of Jazz. He had plenty of time to change his mind on some scores, and, perhaps, mature a bit.

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
I second the suggestion of Blowin' In From Chicago; also Jody Grind or Minor Moove. As for me, how about Gettin' Around--Dexter Gordon Arts & Crafts--Matt Wilson Riding the Nuclear Tiger--Ben Allison Soul Food--Cyrus Chestnut, or (dare I say it) Confict!--Jimmy Woods I also like the idea Africabrass had of a thread focusing on a particular era/artist per week. Coleman Hawkins' work of the '30s was an example; I'm sure everyone could think of more. -
Berigan, I've got the Lucky Millinder----it's great. I would love to get the Kay Starr also. Propers are very easy to find around the Bay Area....too much so for my pocketbook.

Hardest Blue Note cds to find.
BruceH replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I looked and looked for Slice of the Top for years before finally seeing a copy at Streetlight Records a few months ago. By that time I had just about given up hope. -
I totally agree. Great album, one of Criss's best. The album cover is not terrific, true, but you can't argue with the music.
-
I agree with the consensus here. My impression is that most of the potential Mosaic buyers already know about it, know about the website, and aren't going to stop buying because the BNBB imploded. As for the larger, Norah Jones crowd, they won't even be affected to the tune of .001%.

Simple Question... Have you read the Thread... Sorry someone did that to me on a BB.. never went back.. don't want to chase you away... but Hell read what is above your post.. both pages Gee, thought I did read it... All seemed to be about the 4-CD boxes. Must have missed something. BTW, I have the Nat King Cole box, "Cool Cole." It's a good starter set. The sound is not the best, but considering the price, acceptable.

Nice to hear, for a change, that a jazz musician is doing well financially in the latter part of his life. The same could not be said of Dupree Bolton, for instance, or about 2,000 others.
-
As luck would have it, I just picked this up last weekend on a bookbuying expedition to Grass Valley/Nevada City. At the rate I've been reading things lately I'll probably not finish it before the Mosaic Berigan arrives on my doorstep. But ya never know...

Best 'modern' albums w/ just alto & tenor up front
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Just listened to this last week, brownie. One of my favorite Pepper albums, even though technically it's more of a compilation. I vote for anything by Konitz/Marsh. What a sound they had! -
What albums *really* exceeded your expectations???
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
Donald Byrd The Transition Sessions with Doug Watkins and Joe Gordon (Mobley's on some tracks too). Great double-CD, both musically and sound-wise. Speaking of Gordon, I also recently found a copy of Lookin' Good and agree with Stan. Also Blues Bag, a Buddy DeFranco album with Art Blakey, has been getting a lot of play at my house. Arts & Crafts, by Matt Wilson. Ed, if you can find a copy of the West Coast Classic Katanga with Curtis Amy and the great, little-heard, Dupree Bolton, snap it up! It kicks ass. Recently I found a WCC sampler CD for only $5. Great deal. I wish they were all still in print. -
Does the vinyl copy include the bonus tracks?
-
It's my own personal Album of the Week. (Plus all of Teddy Edwards' albums.)
-
I have Griffin's "The Congregation" and indeed, the jewel case hinge is opaque white. I believe the re-release of Brooks' "True Blue" is the same.
-
Another reason to get the Gerald Wilson Mosaic. I forgot, Carmell Jones appears on Conflict as well. Quite a line-up.
-
They didn't, but the second place I went to did. Rooster, when you're right, you're right: This is a Hell of an album. Jimmy Woods was quite the mystery man...appeared on the 1961 Joe Gordon album, "Looking Good" (Gordon's only LP as a leader before his untimely death), then two albums as a leader for Contemporary, "Awakening" and this. Then he apparently dropped out of sight. What gives, I wonder? His first album is pretty good too, but Confict takes the cake. Always happy to have more Harold Land, but Andrew Hill and Elvin Jones too? Why not also get Eric Dolphy, Art Pepper, and Donald Byrd and be done with it? Jeeze. Why isn't this album more famous?
