  1. 15 years already? That makes me feel old.
  2. Never mind...
  3. Bollocks.
  4. I really like the thread. Please keep it up.
  5. The first time I saw it I had no expectations. And I admit to liking it more for style than substance. One of my favorite parts are those mid-60's opening credits! Well, I had quite some expectations of course... it was on the big screen as part of a larger Newman series, and before catching "Harper" I'd seen films like "Sweet Bird of Youth", "Exodus" (dubious film but great Newman performance), as well as some good later filmes including "Mackendrick Man" and that hilarious "Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean"... and being a big fan of early Lauren Bacall films and noirs in general, I found "Harper" lacking in many respects, including screenplay/dialogues, construction of the plot, and also, I regret to say, general style. Still better than The Drowning Pool! ...And don't you mean "The MacKintosh Man"?
  6. You and me both.
  7. Run for the hills!!!!! It's HAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. That's what happens when you get too corporate.
  9. Football knowledge?
  10. Sheesh, it's not like they have a name like The Butthole Surfers or something. (Personally, my favorite hardcore band name remains "Pile of Anal Scrapings." Does anyone out there still have their second album, "Songs For Swingin' Suicides"?)
  11. Wynton Marsallis says jazz started in 1896, so it must have. (As to HOW it got started, I'm not sure.)
  12. I'm halfway with you here. Personally, I think the album is a mixed bag, with some very good compositions, and some that are a bit on the dull side, but it doesn't hang together well as an album. I love the track "Enitnerrut" for one. Also, it's supposedly one of the worst RVG's soundwise, as ghost pointed out----a lot of others would agree with him. This might add to the sense of it just sitting there (if you've got the RVG.)
  13. It's strictly academic.
  14. Just re-read The Mind Behind the Eye, a rather obscure 1971 science fiction novel by Joseph Green. Didn't really mean to re-read the whole thing, but it's got a high pulp-readability quotient. Once more, I'm amazed at how much Green managed to cram into such a short space.

  16. You think this is a bad or unflattering cover? Is it the cowboy/Western garb that Rollins is sporting, or the washed-out quality of the photo? Yep, it's the cowboy! Sonny isn't a country & western musician.... It's a great album, but I don't like that cover! It's supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek play on the title, but to each his own. It strikes me as funny (in a good way.)
  17. I think Philly Joe Jones belongs on that list, too! I might add Sonny Clark to that list as well.
  18. but anyway he certainly wasn't a good-looking man so maybe it's a bit unfair to post his album covers here Wha..? I always thought he was a rather handsome guy myself. Not that I'm actually physically attracted to him or anything like that. ...Not that there's anything WRONG with that. If that's who you are. Which I am not. But I'm not saying it's wrong. (I've really painted myself into a corner here.)
  19. You think this is a bad or unflattering cover? Is it the cowboy/Western garb that Rollins is sporting, or the washed-out quality of the photo? Frankly, I always loved this cover. Still do.
  20. This one always struck me as odd.
  21. Colbert also made some funny jazz-related jokes in a recent "Who's Not Honoring Me Now" segment.
  22. That poor old lady! In reality, they'll just get their grandkids to hook up the converter box for them.
  23. Very sad news. One of the greats. RIP
