  1. Wow, and here I thought I was paying a lot by getting the hardcover at Borders the day it came out. It turns out it was a great bargain!
  2. There'll always be nay-sayers. For everything. "Rubber Soul sucked." "Elvis sucked." "Beethoven sucked." "Children of Paradise sucks." Yeah. Sure. Whatever.
  3. Copernicus' Secret: How the Scientific Revolution Began, by Jack Repcheck.
  4. In Brookline, MA, there's a "Hawes" Street. I always called it 'Hampton' Hawes Street.

    Trippy!
  6. It's the fault of those damn Pauls!
  7. Chalk me up as a big fan of Blowing In From Chicago also. The worst I'd say about it is that it's certainly not groundbreaking. But it isn't meant to be; just a very solid blowing date. But TEHO (to each his own.)
  8. Bruce, In general I thought both season 1 and 2 of the Wolfe were over the top. . . a bit. I didn't imagine them this way (I've read all the Wolfe, and nearly all of Rex Stout.) But still, I really enjoy the series because. . . it's Wolfe and Goodwin! Besides, my best lady friend thinks I'm Archie! (Come to think of it, I was born in Canton, drink milk the way he does, have to have my eight hours, and a few other coincidences!) Got to agree somewhat. The show is a little over the top, or, as I thought of it, "cartoonified"...a bit. Lil' bit. Especially the first couple of episodes. And I don't like the change in the decor of Wolfe's office between season one and season two. But there's enough right for it to be still pretty entertaining. For me, anyway. And Chaykin makes a good Nero Wolfe. (Sorry for the late reply.)
  9. Count me in as a longtime fan of Jean Simmons.
  10. And I had just the opposite reaction in a way: my wife and I felt like we'd just watched another Fargo. The movie just seemed kinda pointless. The performances were good, of course. We also felt like Pitt's character was killed WAY too early. Tilda Swinton was such a bitch we kept waiting for her to get killed (I won't spoil it for anyone wondering if she gets offed or not). This is the second movie we've seen with Frances McDormand and really enjoy her acting; she has such a "lovable goofiness" (for lack of a better term), but at the same time it felt like she was just reprising her role from Fargo (or maybe extending it, like what might happen if that character divorced her husband and started a new life in Maryland). That's funny, I felt the two characters were very unalike. Mainly, the character that McDormand played in Fargo was smart, good at her job, and had a basic horse sense. The character from Burn was basically a flaming moron.
  11. Yes, that was a good one. The Lew Harper character came back for The Drowning Pool. Yes, although personally I always thought Harper was a better movie than The Drowning Pool.
  12. That writer was on Colbert! Seemed like a good guy.
  13. I can't be sure that I enjoy it as much as YOU do, Tom, but I like it a whole lot! Great album. I should dig it out and play it tonight.
  14. Why did he do such a truckload of albums for his label (I think it was Columbia but can't swear to it) just before they dumped their jazz department? Did he have some kind of advance warning that they were about to ditch jazz, or was it just a strange coincidence?
  15. Hardly anyone has mentioned Harper (1966)---sure, in many ways a minor film, but there's just something about it that I find incredibly likeable. Time was I used to watch it at least once a year.
  16. Of his late films, my favorite is probably Noboby's Fool; though I freely admit that I like that film out of all proportion.
  17. No - it's "Dial 'S' for Sonny" I was talking about. Somehow it doesn't jell ... it may sound heretic, but to me the top Sonny Clark album is the trio date on Time Records! I rather agree about Dial 'S'---despite a stellar line-up electricity refuses to flow and it remains perhaps his most earthbound session as a leader.
  18. I didn't know he had cancer, but I knew something must be up when he announced he wasn't going to act anymore last year. As someone already said, a life well-lived. He'll be missed. RIP Mr. Newman.
  19. Wonderful group, that should have been on the most recent Nuggets set. The mom-and-pop record store I used to work at had them do an instore when Hypstrz Live at the Longhorn was issued by Bomp. I ran across the "Hypsterz Live" album sometime in 1984. Great stuff! Hugely energetic punk album. I agree that at least one song of theirs should have been on Nuggets III. As for a really overrated album----how about Thriller by Michael Jackson. I always considered it a real yawn.
  20. No, I had the same problem.
  21. I can't wait for when they start using human meat in hamburgers. Wait, yes I can!
  22. "It lingered there To touch your hair..."
  23. Well, okay, that sounds alright then.
