  1. Okay, I think we all agree. It was my first time seeing the Warriors in quite a while. To answer Guy's question, overall Kings shot 43.2% (35/81). From 2-point range they shot 53.1% (34/64). It should fun to watch the GSW improve this year, and I'd say they definitely have a shot at a playoff spot, even in the west. And they're doing it primarily with young players who will be interesting to watch develop. And I'm definitely on board for the proposition that all that matters is scoring more points than your opponent.
  2. OK, the Warriors play some D. Definitely more than sack o' tomato last night, at least in the first half. Still Kings scored 53 in the first half and 105 in the game. I understand if GSW score quickly that provides more opportunity for both teams to score. Kings shot 43% from the field, and a woeful 1/17 from 3-point range. Was that latter number due to great perimeter D by Warriors, or were Kings players open and firing up bricks? [As I said, I only caught the first half.] Those two teams played even after the first quarter, and scored over 100 points. Fast-paced means more chances, but is allowing 100+ points, especially when GSW not extending their lead, indicative of great D? One thing is for sure. Baron Davis appears to be a man on a mission with something to prove, and looks good with a few of the lbs shed. And the young players look like they can play.
  3. I caught only the first half of Warriors/Kings. Baron was definitely the king. But I gotta ask, do any of the teams out in Cali play any D? That thing looked like a layup drill (at least in the first half).
  4. That's what I'm thinking, but then the Cavs' losses have been to Atlanta and Charlotte.
  5. Larry Hughes' injury, initially believed to be a bruised leg, is in fact a high ankle sprain. He'll be sitting for awhile. Cavs travel to take Wiz on Saturday, and then have 4 games in 5 nights (Mem, Tor, Ind, Phi). Hopefully Sasha Pavlovic (and perhaps Damon Jones) will be up to the task.
  6. I've thought about this some, but haven't actually assembled such a mix. I often participate in a spin bike session which usually features rock, techno, motown (lots of U2, occaisionally the US3 hit). Thought about handing an all-jazz disc to the instructor and seeing what would happen (or alternatively use it when I spin by myself). Many of them are included because they provide a steady groove, a groove that may be a bit slow for runners. Herbie Hancock- Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Chameleon [? hill climb] Miles Davis- All Blues, Freddie Freeloader Roy Haynes- Sneakin' Around Yusef Lateef- Road Runner, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Head Hunters Cannonball Adderley- Who Cares? Sticks Nat Adderley- I Got Plenty o' Nuttin' Wayne Shorter- Adam's Apple Horace Silver- The Preacher, Doodlin' (as cooldown?) Thelonious Monk- Misterioso, Thelonious Art Pepper- Groovin' High, Move Dee Dee Bridgewater- Permit Me to Introduce You to Yourself (as warmup?), Tokyo Blues, Nica's Dream (all from the Horace tribute album) Carmen McRae- It's Over Now, You Know Who, Listen to Monk (all from the Monk tribute album) Mose Allison- What's Your Movie? Josephine, Gettin' There (exhaustion starting to set in), I'm Alive Organissimo- Stomp Yo' Feets, Clap Yo' Hands Dave Douglas- Play It Momma Joanne Brackeen- Everything She Wants, Fi-Fi Goes to Heaven Don Bennett- Dance of the Night Bad Plus- 1979 Semi-Finalist, And Here We Test Our Powers of Observation, Layin' a Strip, Dirty Blonde, Big Eater, 1972 Bronze Medalist, Flim Tomasz Stanko- Suspended Variation II Haven't sequenced such a mix, and one would definitely need to consider some Blakey, Dex, Trane.
  7. Sad news indeed. I attended the same high school as Gerald and Sean (two years ahead of Sean, and I guess one year behind Gerald). Don't recall crossing paths with Gerald in any musical activities there. 40 is way too young.
  8. Larry Flynt Fred Flintstone Fred MacMurray
  9. Tribe deals 3B/1B Kevin Kouzmanoff and reliever Andrew Brown to Padres for 2B Josh Barfield. Tribe has Andy Marte, Victor Martinez, Ryan Garko and Casey Blake to cover 1B/3B so Kouzmanoff unlikely to get a ton of time, and Brown was out of options. Barfield is right handed, has some speed, and could possibly bat second between Sizemore and Hafner. Sophomore season may be tough (like for Peralta), as well as switching leagues, but I like the addition of Barfield. Tribe now needs to work on bullpen plus maybe one veteran bat.
  10. Cleveland beat writer indicates there is a rumor that the Tribe would trade for Sheff. Seems likely they will be outbid by others (and hopefully so). Other veteran bats of interest: Moises Alou and Luis Gonzalez.
  11. Agreed. I like the way McQueen can hop in his car, and run into little or no traffic in the Bay area. Was it ever like that?
  12. Tower online is not liquidating. They are selling that business separately. Letter from CEO: Hello, First, my sincere apology for not writing to you right after the auction. 13. Jim, Any chance you'll make other east coast stops in January, like a triumphant return to DC, for example?
  14. The lala trading service does this. They track sales/trades, and part of the fee paid for receiving a CD is a royalty payment made to the musician.
  15. Larry Hughes looked good tonight. So did Drew Gooden. Sloppy game, but not terrible for game 1.
  16. My reaction to Sunday's show at Univ of Maryland is similar to Pepe's. Perhaps my expectations were a bit high with all of the "Impulse" hype, the collection of "all-star" horn players (Alexander, Roney, Harrison, Turre), and the Bob Belden arrangements. I came away underwhelmed by the horn players, and the arrangements (everyone plays the head together, then three players at a time shuffle mostly offstage while one solos). Alexander and Harrison had the best nights that night. Roney didn't seem to connect (or ever look up). The trio was great, especially Charnett Moffett. McCoy appears to be slowing down a bit in terms of getting on/off the stage--I hadn't seen him live since summer 2001 in Chicago--but he can still deliver the goods. Bertrand, good to finally meet you. I didn't work the Twins room during the recent organissimo visit as well as I could have, but I correctly figured you were the energetic fellow sitting front and center...
  17. This squawking is making me long for a heatwave. At least then some stats get discussed/misinterpreted along with all the needless vitriol. What does the Tribe have to look forward to acquisition-wise? Maybe welcoming back Ronnie Belliard after his St. Louis sabbatical. And bullpen help, lotsa bullpen help. Preferably not of the one-year-from-retirement variety ...

  19. Do we know that McCoy is actually taking part in the pre-show discussion? For some other (non-jazz) events at another university (George Mason), the pre-show discussion typically involves an artistic assistant or business person. Received the following email Friday from UMD: Join us before the McCoy Tyner Septet concert at 6PM to celebrate the anniversary of Impulse! Records and the enduring legacy of John Coltrane. This free pre-performance discussion will feature jazz broadcaster Rusty Hassam, producer Willard Jenkins and musician/educator Carl Grubbs. Author Ashley Kahn, originally scheduled to be part of the conversation, cannot join us due to a family emergency. However, his book THE HOUSE THAT TRANE BUILT: The Story of Impulse Records will be available for sale in the Grand Pavilion.
  20. Hey Bertrand, I will be at the Maryland show as well, and probably the Ashley Kahn pre-show discussion. Blurb about Tyner Septet Arrangements by Bob Belden. Tunes include "Alfie", "Africa", "The Dancer", and "Resolution."
  21. I caught their first set on Monday at Blues Alley in Washington. The room was packed, largely it seems, with folks that do not go out much to hear live acoustic music. [Maybe some from Polish Embassy??] The quartet played well, but I enjoyed their last DC visit more. Tomasz was going for it on some very soft, or "vulnerable" lines, and not succeeding too much (especially amidst the excessive chatter--hey, I realize I'm not at an orchestra concert, or staring at museum pieces at the art gallery, but...) Like others, I was particularly impressed by the pianist Marcin Wasilewski. I'll have to listen to the rhythm section's trio debut on ECM a bit more. I like Tomasz' (well-documented) specs and blazer combo.
  22. I have one of those card thingamabobs, and have never been told what the discount is. I have no personal experience suggesting that there is an automatic discount, because I've always also had a printed coupon in hand (frequently sourced from this thread). It looks like you get points or dollar credits that accumulate and can be cashed out during the holiday season. There is also some personal shopping day thing as well. Related question: Using the card, has anyone ever been deterred at checkout from using the same coupon multiple times? It would seem natural that they could track coupon use if every time you used a coupon you also had to show your card (which recently I have had to do). I haven't been deterred but I also haven't tried to use a coupon more than twice. I'm a relatively infrequent Borders shopper, because as others have said, they're nothing to write home about unless the discount is at least 30%. Perhaps others, like Bertrand [?], can offer greater detail.
  23. And please spare us the notion that the fans must be oh so knowledgable because the NY teams (...primarily the Yankees) have had so much success. There are smart fans and hooligans everywhere, even in NY, and Boston, and Philly, and Detroit, and Chicago, and Cleveland, and DC, and Fort Wayne, and [insert your beloved home town here]. That sort of generalization/stereotype is sad. What evidence is there that the NY fans "are the most knowledgable around"? A sprinkling of anecdotes won't be convincing. Would you suggest that most of the rest of us can't be knowledgable about jazz because we've avoided residing in/near NY (and Chicago, NOLA, KC, etc...)? Individually? Collectively? I hope not. Mets had a great season. Hernandez and Martinez were missed. Reyes and Wright look to be the real deal, so there will be plenty of opportunities in the future. Now join most of the rest of us and watch the Series with a slightly detached enthusiasm (...cue Lasorda).
  24. Looking forward to seeing them Monday night at Blues Alley in DC. Sal, did you see them last year (supporting Suspended Night)? If yes, any comparison to last night?
  25. BFrank, thanks for the deep background. I'll probably be waiting for the 40% level before scavenging.
