  1. I've loved this album ever since it first came out. Given his large discography, this album may often get overlooked, but it has some really strong material and performances on it.
  2. The first album is marred by the use of the dreaded electric piano on some tracks. The second album was recorded at a long-gone club called "In Your Ear" once located in nearby Palo Alto. I wonder exactly where it was. PA today would be a very unlikely place for a jazz club.
  3. Not really. He was only included on 3 of the tracks, i think, (the more Latin-tinged ones) and his solos were fairly concise.
  4. "The Winds of Heaven", a Bob Doroguh - Fran Landesman composition: or the version which millions of people -- at least, those millions of people who bought this LP back in the day -- likely had but seldom listened to:
  5. I'm very saddened to hear this. I've long been a fan of his music. I'm grateful I got to see him perform twice, once with Dave Frishberg and once with Dan Hicks as part of one of his "Holidaze In Hicksville" shows. He was a great live performer, always full of energy, joy and humor. Thanks Mr. Dorough for decades of great music
  6. Had not listened to this in years and had forgotten that "Make You Feel My Love" is on here. That song -- and his performance, in particular, of it -- always melts me. It's no wonder BD went on to explore and record "standards". He wrote a mighty beautiful "standard" himself with that one.
  7. A few weeks ago, DeepDiscount.com had a 15% off sale and I tossed this one into my order knowing it was on backorder and there was every chance they might never get it. Well, it arrived in the mail today and I really dig it. It's a shame this album did not lead to better days for Austin Cromer. Joel Dorn's liner notes make comparisons to some of the usual suspects -- Eckstine, Jeffries, Hibbler, Coleman --, but he also mentions one Herb Lance. Who he? On this album, Mr. Cromer was accompanied by a cracker jack quartet: Chick Corea, Richard Davis, Bruno Carr and Hubert Laws (who doubled on guitar here, an instrument I did not know he played).
  8. Earlier, Disc 2 of 2 from: which includes the episodes "The Siege of Fort Night" and "The Chinese Legs". Currently Disc 1 of 4 from: which includes performances by Jell Roll Morton, Burt Bales, Wally Rose, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jesse Fuller and others.
  9. on which he was accompanied by such musicians as Howard Alden, Dan Barrett, Vince Giordano, Bobby Gordon, Ken Peplowski, Terry Waldo and Mac Rebennack.
