  2. I've never seen the movie and really have no interest in seeing it, but the soundtrack CD was an excellent compilation disc. This was my first exposure to these Johnny Hartman tracks and spurred me to eventually track down the Bee Hive album they came from and then, of course, to finally get the Mosaic Bee Hive set last year.
  3. and one featuring the "Un-Cola"
  4. I've only heard this one track on a Timeless Records sampler disc. If the rest of the album lives up to the great standard set by this track, then I will have to track it down.
  5. They sure did write some great, catchy songs. Part of the fun of this compilation is hearing some of the less well known tunes they wrote. I like the fact that they wrote their own "answer songs", like "Bear Cat" (sung by Rufus Thomas) which was their response to their own "Hound Dog" and "I'll Be There" (sung by Damita Jo) which is basically "Stand By Me" complete with the same melody and similar arrangement. I also like hearing some performers included here which were unfamiliar to me like Sammy Turner, The Honey Bears, The Cheers, Young Jessie and Baby Jane & The Rockabyes. For some reason I really liked this tune. It's very much a product of it's era, but I'm kinda surprised it wasn't a hit:
  6. Disc 1 of 2. This is a fun and interesting compilation. There's not much in the way of informative liner notes, but among the 32 (!) tracks on this disc are recordings by Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, The Drifters, Big Mama Thornton, Jimmy Witherspoon, Big Joe Turner, Wanda Jackson, Ben E. King, The Coasters, The Isley Brothers, Georgia Gibbs, Lonnie Donegan and many more.
  7. This is a fine compilation/sampler. Lots of good tracks, but for me, Machito's "Quimbobo" really kicks butt!
  8. which is the 32 Jazz reissue of this Muse CD:
  9. although the version I have looks like this:
  10. I grabbed a Wesla Whitfield CD to listen to at random and happened to grab this one from 1990 -- which has a few tunes made more poignant in light of her recent announcement -- "For All We Know", "Something To Remember You By" and particularly "My Buddy" (the last one, I'll admit, made me a little verklempt).
  11. I received this forwarded message of an email sent out to those on the mailing list of SF bay area jazz singer Wesla Whitfield: Dear Friends and Fans I want to thank you for all the love and devotion you've given me over the years. I've had a wonderful time making music for you but it's become time to leave the room. I'm very comfortable at home with Michael and I am well looked after by the sterling hospice folks. I decided not to have any major interventions to try and cure what is a very large tumor and a severe infection. I've had a great life and the thought of all you lovely people who have listened to my singing brings me great peace.... Much Love Wesla P.S. I probably won't be able to answer all your well wishes, but you can write to Mike and he'll read them to me..... mikegreensill@gmail.com -------------------------------------- (Mike Greensill is her husband and pianist.) I'm very saddened to hear about this. Ms. Whitfield is one of my very favorite singers around today and she has been one of my favorites for at least 25 years. I have at least a dozen of her recordings and she achieves marvelous moments on each one of them.
