  1. Now spinning: Prysock in Philly International mode. He even opens the album with a Gamble & Huff tune.
  2. I think this archival recording -- recorded in 1977 but only released in 2007 -- is probably Foster's best with his Loud Minority Band: Perhaps it might make for an easier path into his music? If you haven't heard it already . . . Sublime.
  3. More Brit-Jazz from the 70s:
  4. Streaming via the Jazz in Britain site:
  5. Yes! So much wonderful music. Totally agree too re: Horizons. Along with Sama Layuca, it's probably the McCoy album that I play most often.
  6. Disc 1 - recordings from '80 & '81
  7. Yeah, that cover is wretched. As for the music, it's never been an album that's blown me away either. It's good -- on some days I might even say very good -- but nothing more than that. I really enjoy this particular BE trio (with Gomez & Morell), but I think they did their best work elsewhere. Now spinning: I have this version of Ben & Sweets in my collection.
  8. Cool memories! Thanks for sharing them. I have LPs from my father's collection that are very special to me. Lots of positive associations.
  9. New Testament Basie takes off.
  10. @Teasing the Korean, next week's race, the Italian GP, will be at 3:00pm local time (in Italy) and 9:00 am on the US east coast. It's at Autodromo Nazionale MONZA, which is known as "The Temple of Speed." TTK, given your interests, I bet you'll recall the Monza raceway from the 1966 film Grand Prix. One of the film's characters, Sarti, played by Yves Montand, dies in a racing accident there. Along with Montand, the film features a terrific cast -- with James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, and Toshiro Mifune. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how you look at it), the high, banked walls that are shown in the film were later removed from the circuit. They were deemed to be too dangerous. Also, many other safety features have been implemented since then, particularly chicanes, which are designed to reduce speeds. Even so, Monza is still Monza -- one of the most special circuits & races on the F1 calendar.
  11. Art Pepper - So in Love (Artists House, 1980)
  12. I thought that race was later in the day too. I think my confusion had to do with local time (at the race location, in this case Holland) vs. the viewing time for me (US east coast time). There's only one F1 race per day. However, sometimes there are F2 races on the same day. Usually, those are before the F1 races.
  13. My gut response (and nothing more than that): No. The "big bands are coming back" thing has always struck me as something that appealed to folks who were there for it the first time around. OTOH, what we might call the "New Conservatism" of the late-70s and (especially) the 80s seems more like a cultural re-assessment of something that was new to many listeners (and many of the musicians, as well). In other words, entirely different audiences. However, I have nothing empirical to back that up. 😋
  14. Yes. The F1 race was this morning (on US east coast). No other F1 races today.
  15. Lester Young - Mean to Me (Verve, rec. 1954-55, 2 LPs) Ohhhhh yeah.
  16. Verstappen won the Dutch GP today. He's now tied Vettel's record for nine consecutive F1 wins. I'd be shocked if Verstappen doesn't break the record at Monza next week. I'm not even particularly a fan of Verstappen -- but he's so dominant right now that the storyline for every race is about who's going to finish second.
  17. Next up: The Bill Evan Album (Columbia, 1971)
  18. Returning to the original topic. . . I collect LPs and CDs because I enjoy having a collection and playing music from my own collection. From where I'm sitting, there doesn't need to be any moral component, a rightness or wrongness about it. It's just fun. I like looking at records. I like playing records. I like looking for records. I like adding stuff to my collection, watching it grow. Given technological "advances," maybe there's an irrational aspect to what I'm doing. But it's no more irrational than walking by a stream hoping to find a certain rock -- like rock collectors do. Or peering through a pair of binoculars looking at birds -- like bird watchers do. They do those things because it gives them pleasure. Just like them, that's sufficient justification for me. Other folks can listen to music (or not) however they wish.
  19. Now spinning: Jane Ira Bloom & Fred Hersch - As One (JMT, 1985) Yep. Seems like there's quite a bit of overlap in our jazz preference Venn diagrams. Maybe you'll come 'round to it later. Who knows? Like they say, "Sometimes the magic works. Sometimes, it doesn't."
  20. I think that's an excellent record. More evidence that we all hear differently. 😉
