  1. More from Brazil: Tamba Trio - Tamba (RCA Brazil, 1974)
  2. A few years ago, my then-boss asked me to put together a 30-minute presentation on business communications for our company. Upon reviewing it, the first thing she wanted to do was change the title of my basic, rinky-dink presentation to something like Mastering the Art of Business Communications. I laughed and said, "Mastering something takes a much, much longer time than just 30 minutes!!!" I think "falling in love" with something takes longer than five minutes too. Especially something as complicated and wonderful and DEEP as jazz! So here's my take: In both cases, the ideas aren't bad -- but the titles are absurd. Wow. 30 seconds! That's nuts. Maybe you can sell beer or cars or mobile phone service in 30 seconds. Jazz... I don't think so.
  3. Moacir Santos - Carnival of The Spirits (Blue Note, 1975)
  4. Yes indeed. It's a doozy. I never would've thought to put Farlow together with Mike Nock. But it works really well -- with all sorts of interesting harmonic things happening throughout. Teo Macero produced album. I wonder if it was his idea to get Nock?
  5. Clarke-Boland Big Band - Off Limits (Polydor, 1971)
  6. Ah, I see. Perhaps that's why we didn't see a New Horizons reissue.
  7. Charles McPherson - Live in Tokyo (Xanadu, 1976) Elemental's "Xanadu Master Edition" reissue Hell yeah. This sounds GOOD. Elemental reissued McPherson's Live in Tokyo and Beautiful! -- but not New Horizons. Wish they hadn't skipped that one, since it's one of my favorite McPherson albums. Oh well, I am very grateful for what they did reissue. Besides, I've still got New Horizons on LP.
  8. Now spinning: Nancy Harrow - You're Nearer (Tono Records Canada, 1986) with Bob Brookmeyer, Roland Hanna, Ray Drummond, and Terri Lyne Carrington I really like this record.
  9. Two albums featuring Ray Mantilla: and
  10. I've got a hunch that this particular OJC reissue series will NOT be comprehensive like the last one was. Like Brad suggests, it'll probably be more comparable to BN Tone Poet series, just skimming a handful of titles off the top of the catalog.
  11. You're right, of course. Back in the Eighties, OJC LPs weren't positioned in the marketplace as "audiophile products" -- but now they are. Times change, things change.
  12. Not my choice. But it is an option.
  13. Here's some background on how & why the album was made by author Will Friedwald: https://www.wnyc.org/story/great-jazz-and-pop-vocal-albums-lambert-hendricks-and-ross-sing-song-basie/
  14. Joanne Brackeen - Invitation (Black Lion, rec. 1976) with Clint Houston & Billy Hart Excellent!
  15. Shocking! They're not $5.98 anymore??? Incidentally, $5.98 in 1986 -- when that Jaws OJC LP came out -- is equivalent to about $16.32 today (per an inflation calculator I just used). Not even in the same ballpark as $39. Since CDs were on the rise, vinyl was CHEAP back in the 80s. Today? Not so much. OTOH, I ordered two new LPs yesterday that are unavailable on CD. Thirty bucks a pop. And I expect that I'll enjoy them thoroughly. Whachagonnado?!?
  16. I only discovered Gallery -- and the follow up, Impala (which also features Allen) -- in the last couple years. Two terrific LPs.
  17. NP: Vital music, in every sense of the word.
  18. Eric, You should go to Bob's Blues & Jazz Mart. When I was there in 2021, the stock was a jumbled mess. So don't go there looking for something in particular; instead, just go in with an "I'll poke around and see what pops up" perspective. I've found some good stuff in Shuga Records. Last time I was there, I ended up chatting with owner, who was sitting behind the counter, for long while. Nice guy. Can't recall his name. There are a few Reckless Record locations. I hit a couple of them when I was visiting Chicago in 2021. Not exceptional, but not bad either. Dusty is the mecca, of course. Hope that helps.
  19. Now: Disc 8 - Recordings from 1937-38
