  1. Now spinning: Albert Roussel: Symphonie N°2, Op.23; Pour Une Fête de Printemps, Op.22 / Jean Martinon, Orchestre National de L'ORTF (Erato)
  2. Yeah, I got that LP too -- based on Jim's recommendation.
  3. I was just streaming it via YT. Pretty good stuff. Three of the four cuts are by Intra -- so his voice is more dominant; it feels like Mulligan is a sideman on the date. Intra is shown on the back of the album: From a purely musical point of view, it probably should've been the other way around -- with Intra on the front & Mulligan on the back.
  4. More Gerry Mulligan:
  5. Gerry Mulligan Meets Enrico Intra (Produttori Associati/PAUSA, 1976)
  6. What do you think of that one, Rab? I've never heard it. It's from his "semi-retired" period, right? Before he hooked up with Michel Petrucciani and re-launched his career.
  7. Yes, please. I'd appreciate your recommendations on the Spanish Civil War very much. ... Another period that I'd like to dig more deeply into: The Islamic al-Andalus and the Christian Reconquest (8th–15th centuries). I'm a Hemingway fan, so I've read that one a few times. For Whom the Bell Tolls as well.
  8. Prompted to pull this from the shelf by soulpope's post above: Received this CD as birthday gift shortly after it was released.
  9. Now spinning: Dick Hyman with the New York Jazz Repertory Company - Satchmo Remembered: The Music of Louis Armstrong at Carnegie Hall (Atlantic, 1975) featuring Joe Newman, Ray Nance, Ruby Braff & others on trumpet (or cornet)
  10. I'm aware of it -- but I've never heard it. It's worth seeking out? Now playing: Rubén Blades y Son del Solar - Live! (Elektra, 1990) Tremendous!
  11. In reference to the post by @Dan Gould: Glad to hear that your injury isn't too terribly bad. Good that Penny's kick was less than full-strength.
  12. Brad, If Spain is an area of expertise, are there any other books that you'd particularly recommend?
  13. Pim - I'm not sure that I'd have anything to add to your already considerable Waldron-knowledge.
  14. Last week's entries: - Shirley Scott - Oasis (Muse, 1990) - Tony Williams - Native Heart (Blue Note, 1990) - Steve Kuhn - Oceans in the Sky (Owl, 1990) Now, there's just one final set of three albums remaining to reach my total of 150 for the decade. After that, I plan to post a "bonus list" of 50 albums, many of which I only discovered this year -- too late for inclusion in my survey. Then... done!
  15. via YouTube: Okay Temiz - Oriental Wind (Sonet, 1977) with Lennart Åberg (sax, fl), Hacı Tekbilek (fl, bagpipes, baglama [saz]), Bobo Stenson (p), and Palle Danielsson (b)
  16. Thanks to YouTube, I'm listening to this now: features Minoru Muraoka on shakuhachi So far, very strange and very cool. So much cross-pollination and such a willingness to experiment in the 70s. I love it.
  17. I don't know any of these, but -- you're right -- lots of interesting looking stuff here. A couple "world fusion" albums caught my eye: Okay Temiz's Drummer from Two Worlds and the Herbie Mann's Gagaku & Beyond. Gonna check those out.
  18. Good one. In my mind's eye, Nancy Griffith will always be a very young woman, as on this cover: Always such a contrast between that "little girl voice" and the powerful imagery in her music. It's still odd that she's gone.
  19. My wife & I are planning to go to Madrid next summer, so:
  20. "Sesame Street" was such a great show, and Bob was a big part of it. I was born the year before "Sesame Street" hit the airwaves, so I was the perfect age. Along with "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood," it had a lasting impact on my childhood. R.I.P. 😢 😢 😢
  21. Now listening to disc 2 from this set: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8 / Karl Böhm, Vienna PO (DG) Böhm's LvB symphony cycle was the first I ever owned & heard -- on vinyl, many years ago. It's still one of my favorite sets. "Imprinting" is a real thing, no?
