  1. Interesting. I had no idea that there was more music from A Drum Is a Woman. That's a BIG bummer that Sony hasn't seen fit to release it. Maybe some day? Hopefully!?!
  2. O.K. Thanks. That definitely sounds weird good.
  3. NP: Weird good? Or just plain ol' garden-variety weird?
  4. Looks interesting. What's it sound like?
  5. Today, I've been streaming music by the Brazilian guitarist Sebastião Tapajós: Violão & Amigos (RCA, Brazil, 1978) and Sebastião Tapajós - Pedro Dos Santos (Trova, Argentina, 1972)
  6. Now listening to this ECM classic:
  7. Prompted by comments from @soulpope on another thread: This is one of his favorites -- and I think it's brilliant too.
  8. Very sad news. R.I.P.
  9. Fantastic list, Pim! There's a lot of overlap in terms of our faves -- but there's also quite a few albums here that I don't know. I'll give them a listen. Yes indeed. More great stuff!
  10. Any of them, really. She was remarkably consistent, and (at least here in the U.S.) her albums sold very well, so it's easy to find her LPs for just a few dollars. She's also an artist whose work "translates" well to anthologies. That said, the first Nancy Wilson album that made me sit up and take notice was Hollywood My Way. It includes astounding versions of Mancini classics -- "Moon River," "Days of Wine & Roses" -- plus a bunch of other hit songs from movies of the day. Yesterday's Love Songs, Today's Blues features Nancy Wilson with Gerald Wilson's Orchestra. Terrific. On a @JSngry recommendation, I recently picked up Tender Loving Care -- with Billy May arrangements. Also wonderful. NP: Good one! So true!
  11. Nancy Wilson - I Know I Love Him (Capitol) Wilson seems to be one of those singers who can convincingly put across a song in many different settings, whether it's sophisticated pop, jazz, soul, R&B -- or a cocktail like this 1973 album that blends all of them. She's supported by The Crusaders (who bring light touches of funk) and Don Sebesky (who brings the swoony-but-effective string arrangements). I've only recently started looking into Wilson's recordings from the 70s. It was a big mistake to wait so long. This is good stuff!
  12. I only discovered Seeds of Time this summer. It's fantastic. I can't believe I somehow missed it for so long. It sorta reminds me of Holland's (and Wheeler's) work with Braxton... but updated to the 1980s.
  13. For good measure, here are 50 bonus selections from the decade. Many of these are recent discoveries, albums I have only heard since Dan and I finalized our blog selections in November 2021. Thoughts?!? I'd love to hear from you about your favorites from the 80s -- particularly those that I may have overlooked.
  14. Peter, it's well worth the search. I think you'd enjoy it. On Oasis, Scott sticks with the Hammond B3. On some of her final albums, she switched over to piano--but I much prefer to hear her play the organ. She has such a distinctive sound on the instrument. I agree!
  15. My final set of three: - Marty Ehrlich, Anthony Cox - Falling Man (Muse, 1991) - Poncho Sanchez with special guest Tito Puente - Chile con Soul (Concord Picante, 1990) - Paul Bley, Gary Peacock - Partners (Owl, 1991) A strong conclusion, I think. Both of the duo albums are excellent. And that Poncho record is muy sabroso.
  16. Terrific record. I like these Braff-Larkins duets even better than the originals on Vanguard.
  17. More Harry Beckett: Harry Beckett's Warm Smiles (RCA Victor UK, 1971)
  18. After listening to Mike Osborne's Outback, which features Harry Beckett as a sideman, I decided to stream this: Harry Beckett - Flare Up (Philips, 1970) with Harry Beckett (tr, flghn); Mike Osborne (as); Alan Skidmore (ss, ts); John Surman (bs, ss); Frank Ricotti (vib, cga); John Taylor (p); Chris Laurence (b); John Webb (d); Graham Collier (arr)
  19. You're welcome. re: Patterns -- Excellent! Now playing:
