  1. My entries for last week on More Favorites: - James Newton - Luella (Gramavision, 1984) - José Roberto Bertrami - Blue Wave/Dreams Are Real (Milestone, 1999) - Martial Solal - Bluesine (Soul Note, 1983) No commentary for these posts yet. Been too busy lately. I will say this... If I were to make a short list of "80s Essentials," Luella would definitely be on it.
  2. Louis Armstrong - Rhythm Saved the World (Decca/GRP) recordings from 1935-36
  3. Resuming my recent jazz-vocals bender with: Carmen McRae - The Great American Songbook: Recorded Live at Donte's (Atlantic, 1972) with Joe Pass, Jimmy Rowles, Chuck Domanico, and Chuck Flores
  4. Next up: George Cables - Phantom of the City (Contemporary, 1985) with John Heard and Tony Williams Digital rip from my LP.
  5. Enrico Pieranunzi Trio & Ada Montellanico with Lee Konitz & Enrico Rava - Ma l'amore no (Soul Note, 1997) Piano – Enrico Pieranunzi Vocals – Ada Montellanico Alto Saxophone – Lee Konitz (tracks: 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11) Flugelhorn – Enrico Rava (tracks: 3, 7) Bass – Piero Leveratto Drums – Mauro Beggio
  6. Dizzy solos briefly on a couple cuts -- but it's 100% Carmen's show.
  7. Next up: An extraordinary ordinary dance date -- and a particular favorite of mine. There's an offhand quality about it that I love. So relaxed. It's perfect. Yes, I dig it too.
  8. The Chico Hamilton Quintet - With Strings Attached (Warner Brothers/Collectables, 1959) with Fred Katz (arr, cond); Eric Dolphy (reeds); Nat Gershman (cello); Dennis Budimir (guitar); Wyatt Ruther (bass); unnamed strings Oh yeah.
  9. Doc Watson - Memories (UA / 2 LPs, 1975) and Doc Watson - Doc and the Boys (UA, 1976) Two from Doc & Merle's terrific run of albums for Poppy and United Artists during the 1970s. It's music that really scratches my folk-bluegrass-country-blues itch.
  10. Lou Rawls with Onzy Matthews - Tobacco Road (Capitol, 1964)
  11. That must have been quite a thrill for a teenager. Do you have an image of your letter? If not, what was it about?
  12. Now on my 'table: Carmen McRae - Velvet Soul (Groove Merchant) Reissue of two Groove Merchant LPs: - Ms. Jazz (1974) - with Zoot Sims (ts); Bucky Pizzarelli (g); Tom Garvin (p, kybd); Paul West (b); Jimmy Madison (d) - It Takes a Whole Lot of Human Feeling (1974) - with Joe Pass (g); Dick Shreve (p); Ray Brown (b); Frank Severino (d); Larry Bunker (perc, vib)
  13. CDs I've ordered recently: This is the first of two albums that Adderley's terrific quintet recorded at the Keystone Korner in 1982. I already have -- and love -- the second album, Blue Autumn. And more singers:
  14. Carmen McRae - For Lady Day, Volume 1 (Novus) Recorded at the Blue Note in NYC in 1983. Zoot Sims sits in on a few cuts.
  15. Terrible, terrible news. R.I.P.
  16. Ray Charles - Ingredients in a Recipe for Soul (Rhino/ABC-Paramount)
