  1. Now spinning Now! Powerful stuff! Music that isn't constrained by the usual boundaries and conventions of genre, an experiment that comes off beautifully. Gene McDaniels should've received a front-cover "Featuring" credit to go along with Harold Land's. Unrelated to the music: How about that photo of Bobby. The word that comes to mind is "baked."
  2. Voices... on records like these:
  3. Larry - are you thinking of Jerry Bergonzi ? He's at the NEC. Duke Jordan for me. I like the way he glides.
  4. Yes sir! Next up: Duke's duet with bassist John Lamb at the beginning of "Ad Lib on Nippon" is so loose, airy, and abstract that it's like an improvised composition within the larger composition. It feels like these sorts of moments from Duke are sideways glances through partially opened doors, like he's anticipating what would be happening in the avant garde -- and jazz in general -- in the coming years.
  5. Now listening to this:
  6. My Gillespie-a-thon continues with: and and
  7. Diz! Bebop! Diz! Bebop! Diz! Bebop! Diz! Bebop! Disc 1
  8. That's a name that's new to me. But I see on his Wikipedia entry that he composed the music for Mannix. Well, that's something, right there.
  9. I think someone should do an anthology for Richard Evans too. Like the Fischer compilation, it'd probably sell ten copies -- but both albums would be full of interesting music!
  10. I like Fischer's work on this Fathead Newman LP: Here are Fischer's writing and arranging credits on discogs.
  11. Gramavision wins handily. They were putting out all sorts of interesting music in the 80s -- John Carter, Billy Hart, Anthony Davis, Oliver Lake, Bob Moses, James Newton, et al. IMO, they were one of the best labels of the decade -- right up there with Black Saint/Soul Note. ECM in the 70s or ECM in the 80s?
  12. Now heading down to Brazil with Diz:
  13. Hubbard, by an eyelash. The Muse label in the 1970s or the SteepleChase label in the 1970s?
  14. More DG in a big band setting: This band oozes swagger. They were badass, and they knew it.
  15. All of it. I prefer Stewart. Dave McKenna or Dick Wellstood?
  16. Probably "Girl Talk" -- but not just in Hefti's arrangement. My favorite version of that song is Ray Bryant's. Basie on Verve or Basie on Roulette?
  17. Agreed. I love Bennie Green, but Freddie's just so omnipresent with Basie's band. Impossible to imagine that band without his rhythm. So I gotta go Freddie G. Speaking of Basie... Frank Foster or Frank Wess?
  18. Import CD with bonus cuts
