  1. Sounds like a GOOD day to me. Two brilliant masterpieces.
  2. Pim - Excellent work, as always!
  3. Pim, You might want to look into Don Pullen's final recording, Sacred Common Ground (Blue Note, 1994). The music features a seven-voice Native American group, the Chief Cliff Singers.
  4. Disc 2 - originally released as The Sun Is Out
  5. Real Gone Music reissue.
  6. Cal Tjader - Descarga (Fantasy) CD compiles 2 LPs: Agua Dulce and Live at the Funky Quarters
  7. I think you'll dig it! Oh man, I love it! There's something child-like about Hermeto's music -- a sort of openness or innocence -- but, at the same time, it's VERY sophisticated and poetic. I think he's in the same category as artists like Sun Ra and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. They do more than write music; they create musical worlds that are unlike anyone else's.
  8. NP: Jorge Dalto & The Interamerican Band - Urban Oasis (Concord Picante, 1985)
  9. I don't have anything to offer, but I'd be interested in learning more about this topic too.
  10. Again: Hermeto Pascoal E Grupo - Lagoa Da Canoa MunicĂpio De Arapiraca (Happy Hour/Som Da Gente, 1984) All those records that Andrew Hill made for East Wind are terrific: Blue Black, Hommage, and Nefertiti. Inner City issued Nefertiti in the U.S., so it's probably the most well-known of the three -- but the other two have flown under the radar, relatively speaking. I heard Hommage for the first time not that long ago, and it blew my mind!
  11. NP: Paquito D'Rivera - Paquito Blowin' (Columbia, 1981) Check out line-up on this LP: Paquito D'Rivera (as, ss, flhn, fl, perc); Mario Rivera (fl); Hilton Ruiz (p); Jorge Dalto (p, el p, kybd); Eddie Gomez (b); Russell Blake (el b); Ignacio Berroa (d, perc); Jerry Gonzalez (perc); Daniel Ponce (perc, cga) That rhythm section is a MONSTER.
  12. I'm sorta surprised that more folks aren't weighing in on this topic. I expected this thread to go like gangbusters. So far... not so much. Are you being shy because the topic is so broad? Or is "Latin Jazz" not necessarily a sub-genre that floats your boat? Vamonos, amigos! I want to hear what you dig!
  13. It's right up there, isn't it?!?!
