MLB 2021: it’s baseball season!
HutchFan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There's a name from the past! Furman Bisher was the lead sports writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution when I was kid. I read his Braves coverage for years, but I was unaware of this book. ...They should've had it in the Argyle Elementary School library in Smyrna! 😉 -
Bud Shank Quartet - That Old Feeling (Contemporary, 1986)

Now spinning: Irakere - 2 (Columbia)

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Coolness points are over-rated. -
Yes!!! That's a terrific CD, from beginning to end.

Inspiring stuff. Thank you for sharing.

Of course, Chico is never austere like so much music on ECM. I get that. I'm not even saying that it would have been good if Chico had recorded for Eicher. I was just thinking out loud about influences, tossing the idea out there. Wasn't aware of that Hamilton had made a duo record with Hill. Will definitely look into that. NP:

Chico Hamilton - Reunion (Soul Note, 1990) with Buddy Collette (as, cl, fl); John Pisano (g); Fred Katz (vc); Carson Smith (b) Question: Has anyone ever heard Manfred Eicher talk about Chico Hamilton -- as an influence on his approach to jazz producing (like the Giuffre/Bley/Swallow trio did)? Especially thinking about Hamilton's early stuff, it seems like Chico's music would have been right in line with what Eicher later emphasized at ECM -- with his focus new or unique timbres, unusual ensemble configurations, and an "unorthodox" approach to jazz in general. That's Chico, right there. I was just poking around on discogs, and it looks like Hamilton never recorded for ECM. Not once, even as a sideman. I'm sorta surprised by that. Not completely surprised. But some. Any thoughts?

Earlier today, I got a promo email from Squidco. They're having a sale on hat Hut's new ezz-thetics line. Among the listings, I noticed an Ives CD that I'd never seen before, Charles E Ives: Another Songbook, by the ensemble für neue musik zürich & Sebastian Gottschick. Looks like Gottschick has arranged Ives' songs for various small ensembles. And it looks like I missed the first entry, since this is number 2. In any case, there was a time that I had nearly everything that anyone had recorded by CEI. But not anymore. So. I was wondering. Has anyone heard these? Any input or observations welcomed.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
HutchFan replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
Ives. -
Nice. Didn't know this was already floating around out there! Thanks Jim! That show was very well presented. Excellent but unobtrusive cinematography. That straight-ahead image of GW soloing during "Milestones" was really ear- and eye-catching! ... And you're right about Teddy. The man had musical charisma! I'm looking forward to seeing & hearing more Frankly Jazz.

Yep. On my 80s Jazz list. NP: So many colors -- a swinging, kaleidoscopic parade. And it's just another night on the road.

Just finished listening to this: This is provocative and strange and impressive as hell. Liebman does not rest on his laurels.

Many thanks for letting us know about this! I'm particularly stoked to hear and SEE Gerald Wilson's big band!

Braves vs. Phillies in less than 2 hours! -
She "represents" a different Congressional district than where I live. So I don't have a say in the matter, voting-wise.
