  1. Recorded in 1978 but not released until 2015. I think George Mraz makes the most beautiful sound of any bassist.
  2. I've enjoyed those recordings very much.
  3. More Jack McDuff. Jack McDuff - The Heatin' System (Cadet, 1972) My desert-island Jack McDuff record.
  4. Jack McDuff - The Fourth Dimension (Cadet, 1974) Oh yeah. ... Dig that Harold Vick tenor solo on the opening cut, "Layin' Back."
  5. "Opening different vistas" ... Yes, perfect description. Wish I'd written that. I agree!
  6. Dizzy Gillespie and His Big Band In Concert featuring Chano Pozo ‎(GNP Crescendo)
  7. Another one from Aldo Romano.
  8. Weekly Recap - PLAYING FAVORITES: Reflections on Jazz in the 1970s Mal Waldron Quintet with Steve Lacy – One-Upmanship (Enja/Inner City, 1977) Barry Altschul – You Can't Name Your Own Tune (Muse/32 Jazz, 1977) Tommy Flanagan Trio – Eclypso (Enja/Inner City, 1977) Count Basie & Dizzy Gillespie – The Gifted Ones (Pablo, 1979) Gary Peacock – Tales of Another (ECM, 1977) Art Hodes – Tribute to the Greats (Delmark, 2001) Mike Wofford – Scott Joplin: Interpretations '76 (Flying Dutchman, 1976) I dig all of these records, but I gotta say ... If I were to slash my survey of 366 recording to a very short list, One-Upmanship would be on it.
  9. This one again: Fantastic. One of Rusty Bryant's best, IMO.
  10. My wife and I bought that record on a trip to Seattle about twenty years ago. Now, if we're ever on a road trip or a camping trip, we've got to play Dusty in Memphis at least once. It's a thing we do.
  11. Yep! NP: Wes Montgomery - Boss Guitar (Riverside/OJC) More grooving, courtesy of Wes, Mel Rhyne, and Jimmy Cobb. Listening-wise, I've been on a big Hammond B3 kick lately. I love how "organ jazz" is almost a world unto itself, its own niche in the wider world of jazz. Been a lot of fun to revisit old favorites -- and check out new stuff too.
  12. Air - Air Time (Nessa, 1978) ... A stone cold classic.
