  1. Oh man, am I ever JEALOUS! NP: Buddy Tate playing "These Foolish Things" will tear your stinkin' heart out! And where's Claude Hopkins on the cover!?!? He's handling the piano, and he's a mofo! (in a deliciously stride-y and understated way.) ... They forgot about Pops' man Arvell Shaw on bass too.
  2. Yessir! I just took a look at the back of the LP jacket, and it says that was recorded in Chateauneuf du Pape, France. So that definitely tracks as a joint Black & Blue/Muse deal.
  3. Earlier today, I went to a local record shop. Record Store Day and all. ... Not that I really need an excuse to go to a record store. Strangely, nothing was really grabbing me, saying, "Take me home!" So I was about to leave. ... On the way out, I decided to poke around in the dollar bins. Usually, I can find an LP or two in there as a consolation prize. Good call. Very, very good call. There, amongst the Linda Ronstadts and John Denvers and Trini Lopezes, I found some really interesting stuff. ... So I thought I'd share. Not many folks would appreciate these particular sorts of finds, but YOU -- my online jazz amigos -- can. Not a bad haul for 30 bucks, eh? By the way, most of the early jazz and swing records were formerly the property of one Grady Gilkey of Chicago. (I only know because he put an ownership sticker on the vinyl labels.) Thank you, Grady. I'll take good care of 'em for you.
  4. Compiles three Moody Argo LPs (less a couple tracks)
  5. Max Roach Quartet - Pictures in a Frame (Soul Note, 1979) with Odean Pope, Cecil Bridgewater, and Calvin Hill
  6. More Max! Specifically, two records by the Max Roach Double Quartet. Easy Winners (Soul Note LP, 1985) and Bright Moments (Soul Note CD, 1987)
  7. Two TITANS! ... "Giants" isn't a big enough word.
  8. Now: LP 1 - aka Screamin' the Blues
  9. Yes! Exactly that!!!
  10. NP: Oh man. Music doesn't get better than this. One little collector-y thing y'all might enjoy: My version of this record is an American Barnaby reissue from 1978. It has an interesting label that I just noticed today as I put the disc on the 'table: Never seen one like that before. It looks like something you'd see on a prog-rock LP, not a record by Pee Wee & Hawk!
  11. mjzee, re: Steve Kuhn -- The Best Things is excellent. ... I'm not familiar with the others. Also, Pete Malinverni's Invisible Cities is very good -- with Rich Perry & Tim Hagans.
  12. T.D., My favorite Mike Westbrook recordings -- along with the two that you mention above -- are both from the early 70s: Metropolis and Citadel/Room 315. Metropolis is readily available on CD in the U.S. BGO has reissued it. Citadel isn't so easy to find, but I would definitely recommend searching for it. It's worth it! Just to whet your appetite, here it is on YT:
  13. Charlie Palmieri - Impulsos (Coco, 1975) with Andy Gonzalez, Jerry Gonzalez, Manny Oquendo, a.o.
  14. Billy Harper - Capra Black (Strata-East, 1973) Still so powerfully expressive -- and an important statement, then and now.
  15. Richard Beirach - Jeremy Steig ‎– Leaving (Storyville, rec. 1976) Originally released on Trio Records in Japan.
  16. Giving this Don Patterson LP another spin:
  17. I know some listeners have described Paul Jacobs' playing as "not French enough for Debussy." Not me. I think his Debussy recordings are marvelous.
  18. NP: I listened to Baby Face Willette's Stop and Listen a couple days ago. Now, it's the "companion record," recorded a few months earlier with the same trio.
  19. That is indeed incredible. Justin, your comment made me think of this famous photo of Roy with Bird, Monk & Mingus: The others have been gone for DECADES ... but not Roy, God bless him.
  20. No such thing as too much "Groove."
