  1. Yep. Another VERY famous anachronistic cover photo: This was the first version of KoB that I purchased. I soon realized that the photo was out-of-time AND reversed!
  2. Does it bother anyone besides me that the photo on this 1971 recording is from 1947? Sure, that's a terrific photo of Monk -- and a famous one. But why not choose an image that's from around the time that the record was made??? That photo is anachronistic. ... Of course, the music is far beyond all criticism.
  3. A very special record.
  4. "Old" is a relative term. I'd just turned 8 years old when that record was made in February 1976. So it pre-dates my first forays into jazz by about ten years.
  5. Woody Herman. One (Philips compilation) from the 1960s and one (Fantasy album) from the 1970s.
  6. Joe Henderson - Multiple (Milestone, 1973) with Larry Willis, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, et al Oh man. This is SO good.
  7. as heard on ...
  8. Joe Henderson - Black Is the Color (Milestone, 1972)
  9. More from Bobby Hutcherson's Mosaic Select set; music originally released on this LP:
  10. I hear you. There's definitely an "off the cuff" vibe. ... Need to pull that one out and give it another listen.
  11. Do you mean the mix is poor? Or some other aspect of production?
  12. More Coryell ... This is one of his strongest records, I think.
  13. Yes! Outstanding record!
  14. Larry Coryell - Toku Do (Muse, 1988) Very enjoyable -- in no small part because of this primo rhythm section: Stanley Cowell. Oh yeah. Beaver Harris. Yessir. And Buster Williams!!! Plus the album is named after Buster's composition "Toku Do." I'm always in favor of props for Buster. Larry sounds pretty good too.
  15. From one superb trio record to another ... Stanley Cowell - Equipoise (Galaxy, 1979) with Cecil McBee & Roy Haynes Beautiful.
  16. Speaking of Joanne Brackeen ... I've been listening to this LP over-and-over-again today: Joanne Brackeen - Snooze (Choice, 1975) with Cecil McBee & Billy Hart Subsequently reissued on Candid as Six Ate. 5 stars.
  17. IIRC, Mercer Ellington (and Billy Strayhorn?) started the short-lived Mercer Records.
  18. Marian McPartland - Halcyon Alvin Queen - Nilva Tim Berne - Empire; then Screwgun
