Excellent! Love those John Hammond-produced Vanguard records. NP: Greasy Kid Stuff!, the second of two LPs compiled on this CD, is the focus of today's entry on PLAYING FAVORITES.

A stone classic, right there.

Eddie Palmieri - Vortex (TropiJazz/RMM, 1996) Another Palmieri disc featuring Donald Harrison, Brian Lynch & Conrad Herwig -- along with a raft of superb percussionists.

"Best Historical Jazz Releases Of 2019"
HutchFan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Rooster, when you say these new NDR releases "sound better" than the HighNotes, do you mean audio quality-wise? Or musically? Just curious. I only ask because I've held off on these, thinking I have enough. 😉 -
Today's entry on my blog.

What Are Your Favorite Jazz Recordings of the 21st Century?
HutchFan replied to HutchFan's topic in Recommendations
Yes, I agree 100%. No more "best of" lists. They're silly. Instead, let's make lists of "favorites," fully acknowledging the subjectivity of what we've chosen. Then it becomes like 'Show & Tell' back in our school days: "Hey, let me tell you about this wonderful thing that I really enjoy. It's not better or worse than what you brought to class. It's just different." Hope I don't sound Pollyannaish. ... I just think the distinction is very important. -

I like the sound that Marty Ehrlich makes on alto -- or any instrument, really. I suppose it says something that his voice doesn't change from instrument to instrument. It's just him. ... He's managed to carve out a niche, his own distinct thing, I think.

That just looks like drug abuse to me. It makes me sad. What a scourge.

IMO... Bashin': The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith is not "watered down." Neither is Wes' Smokin' at the Half Note. Neither is Jimmy & Wes: The Dynamic Duo. And I could easily name a bunch more. Of course, Verve had a different approach to production than BN. A different aesthetic, for sure. ... Some Verve records -- not all -- were more "commercial." But so what? Why throw the baby out with the bathwater? I'm glad to have them ALL. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the kind words, Robert. 🙂

Looks like a great show, David! -
Such wonderful, life-affirming music. A desert-island LP.

Earlier: Not coincidentally, this recording is the focus of today's post on PLAYING FAVORITES.

So true. De gustibus non est disputandum. I've been reading a bit about the UK jazz scene, but I haven't had much of a chance to dig into it yet. For quite a while, I've been focused on my 70s blog project. Looks like there's a lot to discover there though!

Oh yes. Excellent stuff!

Eddie Palmieri - Palmas (Nonesuch, 1994) Donald Harrison, Brian Lynch, and Conrad Herwig are the featured horn soloists here.

Robert, I love these list-type threads -- if only to see what others are grooving to. I started a similar thread on jazz favorites in the 21st century, so it's focused on the last twenty years instead of the last ten. Click here if you'd like to take a look. More grist for the mill of discussion. EDIT: Here's my shortened list, modified for this thread: JD Allen – Radio Flyer (Savant) Kenny Barron – Concentric Circles (Blue Note) Richie Beirach – Impressions of Tokyo: Ancient City of the Future (Out Note) The Brazilian Trio – Constelação (Motéma) Joey Calderrazo – Live (Sunnyside) Bill Carrothers – Castaways (Pirouet) Marc Cary Focus Trio – Four Directions (Motéma) Ryan Cohan – The River (Motéma) Adam Cruz – Milestone (Sunnyside) Alexis Cuadrado – A Lorca Soundscape (Sunnyside) Duduka Da Fonseca – New Samba Jazz Directions (Zoho) Orrin Evans – Flip the Script (Posi-Tone) Tom Harrell – Trip (HighNote) Donald Harrison with Ron Carter & Billy Cobham – This Is Jazz (Half Note) Billy Hart Quartet – One is the Other (ECM) Pablo Held – Elders (Pirouet) Frank Kimbrough – Solstice (Pirouet) Dave Liebman Group: Expansions – Live (Whaling City Sound) Joe Lovano Us Five – Bird Songs (Blue Note) Jason Moran – Ten (Blue Note) Bill O'Connell + the Latin Jazz All Stars – Zócalo (Savant) Chico O'Farrill & the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra – 40 Acres and a Burro (Zoho) Enrico Pieranunzi with Scott Colley & Antonio Sanchez – Permutation (CamJazz) Alfredo Rodriguez – The Invasion Parade (Mack Avenue) Martial Solal – My One and Only Love: Live at Theater Gütersloh (Intuition) Wayne Shorter Quartet – Without a Net (Blue Note) Steve Turre – Delicious and Delightful (HighNote) Mads Vinding, Jean-Michel Pilc, Billy Hart – Open Minds (Storyville) Kenny Werner – The Melody (Pirouet) Larry Willis – This Time the Dream's On Me (HighNote)
