  1. My LP is actually a Verve "MPS Series" reissue. Even though there's not a lot of room to stretch out, Lockjaw & Joe Newman are still on board as the soloists on their respective instruments. Two voices that are always good to hear. Plus, Chico O'Farrill arrangements.
  2. Yes, that was my first exposure to Hino as well -- but it was only on record, years after they'd been made.
  3. Abercrombie, Holland, DeJohnette - Gateway 2 (ECM, 1978) You're being modest. If it was that easy, more people would be able to write well about music.
  4. Oliver Nelson - Stolen Moments (Inner City, licensed from East Wind, 1975)
  5. This is superb writing, Larry. Thanks so much for sharing. What a band the "Lost Quintet" was!
  6. That sounds like it was a fantastic experience! Thank you for sharing it with us! And, yes, please keep us updated as things progress!
  7. First spin of a new-to-me LP: Terumasa Hino Sextet - Fuji (Catalyst, licensed from Victor Japan, 1972) Earlier this evening: Ray Barretto - The Other Road (Fania, 1973)
  8. Brahms: Four Serious Songs; Two Songs for Alto & Viola; etc. / Janet Baker, André Previn, et al (Angel)
  9. Now spinning: This RCA LP is Ormandy's second recording of Sibelius' Second Symphony. His first, for Columbia/Sony, is considered a "classic," but I like this later interpretation too.
  10. soulpope, I'm curious which Segerstam Sibelius cycle you prefer: Danish National SO or Helsinki PO?
  11. I'm not familiar with that one. Will have to check it out. NP: Disc 4 - String Quartets Nos. 8, 9 & 10
  12. More from Blake: Michael Blake Sextet - Amor de Cosmos (Songlines, 2007)
  13. Michael Blake - The Kingdom of Champa (Intuition, 1997) This is very, very impressive -- especially considering the fact that it's a debut recording.

    Billy Harper

Yes. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
  15. I agree. No substitute for having it in your hand. And I'm not a even Boomer.
  16. More Eddie Harris:
  17. Barbirolli's Sibelius 2 with the RPO is probably more highly regarded than his version with the Hallé O. The RPO version is more extroverted -- and more well-recorded. (It was engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson and subsequently reissued on Chesky.) FWIW, I actually prefer Barbirolli's recording with the Hallé. But any Sibelius fan needs to hear both. Incidentally, like Larry, I'm not a fan of Herbert von Karajan's Sibelius. I don't hear anything so dire as a Nazi rally; HvK's reading is just so polished, sleek, and smooth. ... It doesn't align with my idea of Sibelius.
