  1. That's the first Randy Weston record I ever bought/heard. I've been a Weston fan ever since.
  2. Sam Yahel - In the Blink of an Eye (Naxos)
  3. Illinois Jacquet this morning:
  4. I just stumbled across this book, and it looks like it might be very interesting: Pressed for All Time: Producing the Great Jazz Albums from Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday to Miles Davis and Diana Krall by Michael Jarrett (University of North Carolina Press, 2016) Amazon "Look Inside" preview available here. Has anyone read it? If so, have any thoughts?
  5. Today, during a lunchtime record store run, I found Tommy Flanagan's Thelonica on PRISTINE Enja vinyl ...for a whopping $5. I downloaded Thelonica from emusic.com years ago. And I've been meaning to upgrade to CD or vinyl for years. As my Dad likes to say when something goes his way, "I caught a plum."
  6. You won't regret buying it.
  7. I can see that why Dorn might've thought that. Some of the background, party-time crowd noise on one of the cuts is unnecessary. Maybe less "window dressing" would have made for a more impactful record. But overall I think the album WORKS -- especially if I think of it as a straight-up soul record, a sort of Ray Charles-less Ray Charles record. Fathead's four-year run from Captain Buckles (1971) to Lonely Avenue (1972) to The Weapon (1973) and Newmanism (1974) is quite a purple patch, imho.
  8. Oh yeah. I've got this Real Gone CD reissue on my to-get list.
  9. David Newman - The Weapon (Atlantic, 1973) Man, this sounds good.
  10. Streaming via YT: Johnny Lytle - People & Love (Milestone)
  11. My favorite Gator. NP: Jay McShann - In Copenhagen (Storyville, rec. 1977)
  12. Ah, I see. Thx for the info, kh.
  13. This is very exciting news. Roy Brooks is wonderful... but I'm wondering: Was Dannie Richmond not with Mingus' band at this time?
  14. Cal Tjader - Descarga (Fantasy) This CD compiles two albums: Agua Dulce (1971) and Live at the Funky Quarters (1972)
  15. Yes!!! Excellent. This is one that I've been enjoying lately: I suppose "jazz vocalists with strings" is almost another category unto itself.
  16. Anthony Davis, James Newton, Abdul Wadud - Trio 2 (Gramavision) First listen. Just picked this up this disc recently. GORGEOUS so far. I wish Anthony Davis recorded as a leader more frequently. Other than his work with Wadada Leo Smith, he's made very few recordings over the last 30 years.
  17. Two by the Mighty Burner: Charles Earland - Black Talk! (Prestige, rec. 1969) and Black Drops (Prestige, rec. 1970)
  18. LOVE that version!
  19. Herbie Hancock - Thrust (Columbia / Sony Legacy) Sarah Vaughan with Michel Legrand (Mainstream)
