  1. Another Flanagan trio. This time with Mraz & Elvin. Eclypso (Inner City, from Enja)
  2. Tommy Flanagan, Reggie Workman, Joe Chambers - The Super Jazz Trio (RCA Jazz Line, France) Originally released in Japan on Baystate. I assume this is that label's response to Hank Jones' "Great Jazz Trio," who was recording for the Japanese East Wind label at the time. Excellent music. Super, even.
  3. Nice. . . .If you were listening to jazz in high school, you were hip to it before I was. I didn't discover jazz until I was in college. NP: Bags with Lucky Thompson Earlier: Bags with Hawk
  4. I've been listening to two Richard "Groove" Holmes compilation LPs, one from Pacific Jazz and one from Prestige:
  5. Dizzy Gillespie, J.J. Johnson, Gunther Schuller - Perceptions (Verve) Beautiful.
  6. Ron Carter & Jim Hall - Telepathy (Concord) Disc 1 - originally released as Live at Village West
  7. NP: Earlier this evening: and Need to pull that one out and give it a spin. It's been a while. Thanks for the prompt.
  8. I think so. Not certain.
  9. Speaking of Hawk, there was some talk recently on the board about a thorough online Coleman Hawkins discography. (I can't seem to find the thread now.) In any case, a few days ago I stumbled across the documents below, which outline all of Hawkins' solos on record -- everything he recorded, not just his works as a leader. The author also offers notes and comments on each session. 1922 - 1939 1939 - 1949 1950 - 1959 Very helpful info, I think, for anyone who's digging into Hawkins' work. Incidentally, these documents are part of http://www.jazzarcheology.com, an interesting site with many other discographies. Enjoy.
  10. I just picked up Louis' Complete RCA Victor Recordings for a few dollars at a local shop. It's the earlier (1997) release, as shown below: Unfortunately, the liner notes are missing. Can someone who has this set scan the liner notes and send the copy to me? If so, I'd be very grateful. Please message me if you can. Thanks.
  11. Oh, I bet that does sound good. And I love that music too. Not having that particular recording, I'm going to give this Kubelik / Bavarian RSO version a spin:
  12. Frank Foster - Swing! (Challenge) with Ted Dunbar, Mickey Tucker, Earl May, and Billy Hart
  13. Dizzy Gillespie - Afro (Verve/Norgran, 1954) Chico O'Farrill's big band arrangements on this record are SO good. And Diz sounds inspired throughout!
  14. Dave Burrell - Momentum (High Two) with Michael Formanek and Guillermo E. Brown
  15. This looks interesting. I have Askenase's recordings of the Preludes, Op. 28 on a Heliodor LP. Very fine playing. But that's all I've heard from him.
